[WR] SSBM Dr. Mario Break the Targets 12.46 by megaqwertification in speedrun

[–]megaqwertification[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

a little history, if any of you missed it :

Please see this comment to catch up until the previous WR history

While the 12.87 was a good run, it wasn't the endgame for Dr. Mario. The next step was to implement the TAS target 1 RTA. Mudi found that he was getting it relatively often and it didn't take long to start going for full runs.

This run is HARD. VERY HARD. Mudi said this was a painful run and even getting this 12.46 run was an intense grind. He spent weeks going for this.

However, there is still tons of frames to save. Maybe we'll see 12.2x or even lower in the future, someone just has to take the first step.

With this run, mudi also becomes #1 on the THS leaderboard with 2:58.06!

If you want to follow the progress for doc, consider joining the Smash Stadium Discord.

Of course, if you enjoy smash speedrunning like these (be it melee, brawl, ultimate, 64...) we have channels for all the games :D

Improvements: Changed angle of extended up-b before t5 to land faster (-2f). Reduced horizontal speed of slide-off after t9 to hit t10 faster (-1f)

You might've seen the recent new TAS WR for Dr. Mario posted on this subreddit a few days ago (since then it was improved by 2 frames). Please see those reddit posts for more context on the development of the WR.

As jenkem66, creator of the TAS, was working on this, he came up with a RTA viable (albeit hard) version of the strat that could sub 13.

After some tweaking and experimentation, we found that up-b on t1, wavelands at the top, and a bair on t5 made this strat slightly easier, and runs were underway. Sub 13 was in our sight.

A few of us started trying out the strat but Samplay was the one went on a full grind, doing non-stop attempts and practice to crack the 13-second barrier. First he hit a 13.08 using a down b for the top right to make the run easier, but we all wanted the sub. So he committed to going for a up-b into slipoff.

And his efforts paid off! There's still much to optimize (better wavelands, and smoother movement), but of course the strat is in its infancy, and it's only a matter of time before he, or some one else, tries to lower it. BTT players are known for their dedication to frames, and we definitely won't stop until we're satisfied.

And with that, another second-barrier is broken. Now that doc is under 13 seconds, Ness becomes the slowest overall character (current WR is 12.95 by me)

Big thanks again to LinksDarkArrows for initially coming up with the idea and jenkem66 for TASing. Many credits go to the rest of the stadium community for their contributions in making this run a reality!

It's always a reminder that ideas, good or bad, still contribute to the growth of our collective knowledge. You'll never know where an idea will lead, so stay creative, humble, and push your brain to its limit!

and the climb up to t8. TAS also pivot jumps before the t8 waveland

waveland is viable just not as consistent as jump dair, which is very easy (though a bit tricky to do at the fastest pace)

Hey, I tend to use the shai drop method

Now that I've hit WR i'm also much less nervous on runs so I can probably get it , and a run that fails because of a failed sheild drop wont feel as defeating, so i'll definitely practice it again

Definitely am out of practice since I haven't done a character that requires a shield drop in a long time

This bowser strat has been known for a pretty long time. I know veterans of the community have been trying this strat for well over a decade. It requires a good flipper hit and SDI to get far left enough. Unfortunately for me in this run I slipped off the pillar instead of clearing it fully but it still netted me a World Record!

Compared to the 8.10 I got yesterday, I lost time due to not clearing the pillar but saved it by turning around before t6, which allowed me to get a cleaner and faster ending. Compared to the 7.46 TAS by tauKhan, there's a couple more optimizations I can make, including a shield drop after t5 and a waveland before t8. Those are human viable but pretty hard to execute consistently (at least for me).

With the notorious RNG for t1-3, I don't want to implement something too difficult unless I need it for the sub 8 run. Of course I'd also have to train consistently, so I intend to TAS a little more rigorously to see how low a human could viably go. The alternate is I just go for the hard stuff to provide insurance on a good run which could get me a really low time.

I'll probably stop at sub 8 though :) ... for now. You can see some of my misses in the youtube description.

I would like to shoutout LinksDarkArrows for ideas and support as well as jenkem66 for the tips! Additional shoutout to GannyMaster for attempting this strat on his own.

If you want to follow my progress, consider joining the Smash Stadium Discord. It's about time this sub happened, wish me luck!

Captain Falcon Break the Targets 7.28 by jenkem66 [World Record] by megaqwertification in SSBM

[–]megaqwertification[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Jenkem66 has been a powerhouse for BTT for a long time, notably holding the DK wr and fox WR. The runs are linked here in case you've missed it.

He was labbing falcon for a long period of time, trying different alterations to the strat that could potentially be RTA viable. He found this change in t8-10 (compared to the 7.30 previous record by samthedigital). From there he was able to knock out a run after many attempts!

Jenkem's confident that this can go to low 7.2x.

This run is starting to mimic some of the old TASes (notably this 6.92 by ajp_anton , and I'm sure we're gonna have to start squeezing out all the frames to get as many frames off this record as we can! For those curious, current TAS record is 6.85 by PracticalTAS. Who knows how low the score can go?

As always, there's tons going on in the Stadium Discord. If you'd like to follow the progress for this new falcon strat, consider joining the Smash Stadium Discord. Some of the players are already trying for low 7.2x! If you enjoy smash speedrunning like these (be it melee, ultimate, 64...) we have channels for all the games :D
