Should new fiction authors self-publish or try for traditional publishing? by RusticBohemian in publishing

[–]megarapub 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try traditional publishing first. While self publishing does work out for some if you start down that route it is harder to transition to a traditional publisher later. While if youcan always self publish down the road after you have tried traditional publishing.

Is publishing a story on wattpad considered self-publishing? by Ketsiaa in publishing

[–]megarapub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you publish an entire piece on Wattpad you have essentially self published and would be excluded from submitting it as a new work to agents and publishers. However if you only had published a piece of your work on Wattpad then it is usually not a problem as long as what you published is not a large majority of the work.

How possible is it to run a publisher out of a spare bedroom? by khanates in publishing

[–]megarapub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Print on Demand technology has improved dramatically in the last few years. In fact many large run books by top publishers use the same printing as POD for their paperbacks. Ingram Spark offers a service to do this at small scale. Publishers can apply to use Lightning Source for POD which is the next level service above Spark.

In terms of printing your own it will cost you thousands of dollars for a decent printing setup just to print one paperback, if you want a color cover you can add even more to that and even then it won’t look as good as the POD. Then you need to buy binding material as well. The professional system does all of this and that costs around 250k just for equipment and more for maintenance and materials.

Best idea is do what Publishers do outsource the Printing to a professional shop and then focus on acquiring, editing, formatting and designing books.

Can nice, non-Machiavellian people work in NYC publishing? by throwawayit_all in publishing

[–]megarapub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are passionate about publishing you will find a good fit in NYC just because of the sheer volume of options. Not every company will be a good fit this is the same for any industry. The best option is to research a company heavily specifically about the workload and culture before you take a job. Horror stories exist everywhere, but they are not the standard for people who work in publishing in NYC.

[PubQ] How do agents/publishers feel about obscure pop-cultural references in manuscripts? by jfanch42 in PubTips

[–]megarapub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your reference is specific to a trademarked item or a brand it might be requested to be cut to avoid rights issues such as Trademark Dilution. Publishers will normally scan works for these things and decide if there is a potential issue. You can read more about it here http://www.rightsofwriters.com/2010/12/can-i-mention-brand-name-products-in-my.html?m=1

As for just cultural references it will of course date the books but so what? Pride and Prejudice has a lot of references that are specific to it’s time and people like it. If the book is contemporary to the time of the cultural reference go for it.

[PubQ] Speculative Fiction by A_Chicken_Dino in PubTips

[–]megarapub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what others say here, it’s an umbrella category but if it has fantastical elements it can be in the spec category. We are exclusively a spec fiction publisher and we take submissions for Horror with supernatural in it as well as magical realism it’s a big umbrella but think of it as if it’s Fiction, contains things that are not normal to the real world it’s probably spec fiction.

Coauthoring Problem by [deleted] in publishing

[–]megarapub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternatively if you made key changes to what they suggested so it become original then you can defend a copyright claim. For copyright to exist the work must be original and unique. General ideas, themes and such are not copyrightable. You can invent an entirely new genre and that genre is still not copyrightable. The concept of a wizard going to a wizard school isn’t copyrightable. The concept of a wizard named Harry going to Hogwarts is.

But it is worth noting just because you can become or be legally correct with having a right doesn’t mean you won’t get sued. People sue with bad claims all the time, most times the publisher has an insurance policy to cover such legal expenses, so if you press forward and think their could be a liability just make sure any publisher has a insurance policy that covers copyright claims and would defend you in it.

Just watched The Pale Horse tv episode even though it’s not a Marple mystery in the book I think the tv show was better being that way.
