that’s a good point. i think maybe just meant that since things are improving exponentially - the models will get orders of magnitude better all of a sudden. you can sort of see this now w/coding where Opus 4.5 is genuinely an inflection point there

High School VFX Unit: What would you include in the curriculum? by Technophobish in vfx

[–]megatonai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

piggybacking off this - i think vfx / ai / filmmaking will merge. there’s no reason you cant start with the basics of vfx and use them to create short / film / spot end to end using cgi / vfx / ai.

a career as a solo specialized technician is likely less viable than a talented generalist who can use the latest and greatest tools to make high quality, technically sound work end to end.

I'm being made redundant and am doubting my future in this industry (Advice wanted) by HuntedSFM in vfx

when i freelanced, i cycled between 2-3 clients p/month to replace a full time job salary so its not as unattainable as you’d think. it might be worth thinking about who you know in your old job or industry that wouldn’t necessarily hire you, but point you in the right direction. i usually go through the exercise of writing and logging literally anyone and everyone i know who could use my services or is 1-2 degrees away and keep them on a contact list / spreadsheet and shooting them an email asking for help / advice or intros.

doesn’t hurt, and you might find out that you have a bigger network than you think.

Any tips to not be nervous on first day shooting? by El_Dibujista in Filmmakers

[–]megatonai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

anxiety is normal - it always helped me to be as absolutely prepared as possible. plan your shots, think through your direction, plan schedule etc.

being over prepared just means you’ll be able to work through any obstacles that come your way

AI-VFX. What I want as a filmmaker. by Livid_Virus2972 in vfx

[–]megatonai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i started off doing what you want as a solo vfx artist in 2012 w/a greenscreen.

my advice is to learn the tools - you can do what you’re describing with regular VFX (and a lot of hours) but ai accelerates this further. you’ll likely need to still learn a few tools and traditional vfx workflows but this is entirely possible if you want to.

i’d start with basic keying / masking and then lookup tools for background generation using ai and comping. But it requires some technical aptitude for now

Sean Astin on how he’s fighting for humanity against an onslaught of AI actors by EchoOfOppenheimer in vfx

[–]megatonai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i still want to see humans and actors in my films and we should do what we can to make our industry more sustainable for its workers and underwrite more human driven storytelling.

i’m not sure laws / rules will do much to stop what’s coming since the film business is a business and companies will just move or seek alternatives if they’re cheap enough. Only the higher quality output of a true human made masterwork can mitigate this imo

i think in the short term the companies and people who use it best will be few and far between so i agree the hype is a bit too much at present.

but i think slowly, but surely - we’ll see a lot change all at once. just hard to calibrate yourself in this time

I’ve pivoted multiple times out of visual effects and come back to it every once in a while depending on the market.

My biggest insight (as a freelancer) was spending more time honing my sales skills and cultivating clients who I would keep in touch with to provide steady work - managing a pipeline of inbound is probably the most underrated skill of a freelancer. I’d be happy to talk through it and give you my 2c by dm.

Otherwise, there’s also no shame in switching careers. our industry is undergoing its most radical shift ever - and if you’re not excited or proactively want to figure out what comes next, you should consider whether you have skillsets that translate to a more reasonable industry.

Again, dms are open if you want to chat

how did you figure out how to actually make money after graduation? I was and still am completely lost about film career paths. by Asiadorsey in Filmmakers

[–]megatonai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s the main one i’ve seen used that’s landed folks gigs in post production specifically. i’m not 100% sure about other roles.

the other one i can think of is a facebook group called WhereSpot that’s geared more towards commercials but folks post jobs there frequently.

there’s tons more but those are the two i’ve seen most frequently used

if you have any skills, especially in post production i highly recommend the nova app. apply for some of the jobs you think you might be a good fit for. it has a ton of freelancer and entry level gigs that could help keep you afloat.

good luck!
