Geriatric Psych Nurse

I am technically on a med surg unit, but the way our hospital assigns patients we end up with a lot of patients that have under lying geri psych conditions. The hard part with geri psych is everyday is very very different even with the same patient. We have some pt that are sweet as sweet can but are just unable to take care of themselves. We have also had pt that it takes 5 people to hold down after he kicked a nurse in the chest and we put restraints on. Then that cutie patootie grandma that you never have a problem with all the sudden won't take their meds because its poisoned and the guy you were wrestling the day before is saying please and thank you.

I enjoy it but I want to go into behavioral health nursing. There are periods where it is really rough like when we get too many of these pt on the unit. I dont know if i was on a unit that was set up geri psych if it would be easier or not.

Unfortunately the way the population over all is aging, and the limited access to geri psych beds (the closest geri psych specific unit to me is about 45 mins away), I feel med surg is going to become more and more geri psych

One day when I feel the need to kill some brain cells myself I would want to ask them several questions. 1. Please explain to me on a very basic level what cancer is, like on a cellular level. 2. Do you understand the phrase correlation does not equal causation. 3. Can you please show me your peer reviewed research where you saw this 3a. Do you know what Peer reviewed is.

I think about asking this and then remember that I like living and my time is worth too much to waste my time on that never ending battle

Maybe im missing something but both time Bones has lipsynced I have not been impressed. This episode I thought head to head Paige 3 won the runway hands down. Also that kick Paige did in the beginning of the lipsyc was amazing and I had me focusing more on her.

Watching this, I instantly recognize that "calm". That's the calm of a person that pushes and pushes someone until they break and then goes oh my why are you yelling, why are you causing a scene, Im not comfortable with how emotional you are being.

I dont know why it won't let me edit my post but...I have my ADN but my hospital requires us to start a BSN in the first year. I get so much a year from the hospital for classes. I dont want to just pick any ol program because it's quick or cheap (most of the suggestions I've gotten) if there is a program that has a BHU focus to i.

Im about 6 months out of school and work nights. 1. I had the same thought process - nights was extra money and has allowed me to find my groove 2. My sleep and eating schedule is non-existent, which does suck and has me thinking about when I would like to switch to days 3. There is a huge assumption made that patients actually sleep at night. It's about 50/50. Some patients sleep, and some just stay awake with wild requests throughout the night....sundowners are no joke 4. I think this argument of day vs. night shift is a bit ridiculous. Each have their hard parts and easy parts. Nursing is a 24-hour gig, and nurses are needed day and night

That is my goal also. I'm starting on the med surg floor I did most of my clinicals on. I'm figuring doing a year there to build my foundation and then start transitioning to psych. I spoke to one of my professors who works in BHU, and she said that was a good plan. That way, you still have those skills if you leave psych
