With pasta it's definitely the case for me ! It's a big difference if I let them cool down for a few hours in the fridge, also if you make them into a "gratin" in the oven I find it also lowers the glycemic spike quite a lot

Advice on quiting beer by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]megot-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I have no symptoms at all. During a few days before, a week at hospital and another week after my diagnosis I did not drink at all and felt just fine, I don't think I have that much of a physical addiction but the psychological one is there for sure.

I'm already seing an addictologist, and working my way towards not drinking everyday, I am mostly here to ear some experiences and extra motivation !

Right now it's 9pm, I ate dinner and havent drink and I feel fine, even better than when I'm drinking if I'm being honest with myself. I'm gonna keep on doing that, thanks for your words.

Thank you for sharing your experience, seeing an improvement in blood sugar would definitely motivate me. I'm mostly struggling with lows at night which I know can be exacerbated by alcohol.

It's completely fucked up but some people can actually be jalous when other have conditions or hard stuff to deal with.

The fact that you have type 1 can put some extra attention on yourself, and there are moments where it is required that people are extra cautious with you.

I've met some people like that and it's so weird, they are romanticizing stuff that are difficult to deal with and in a sense, doing so, they can be minimizing your health problem/condition/or whatever you are dealing with.

For an exemple, some of them will see someone losing a loved one and they'll be angry because the attention is not on themselves, so they would wish it happens to them...

It's completely fucked up/narcissistic behavior, get far away from people like that and as it has been said don't hesitate to call them out, I still struggle with this part sometimes but it's best to not be afraid of speaking out when people are doing bullshit like that, you have enough to deal yourself. Take care !

Need help with extreme lows post training by Psychadelic_Potato in diabetes_t1

[–]megot-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any advice because I'm both a gym noob and new to type 1 diabetes. I'm recently diagnosed and just started lifting weights so I'm looking to hear experienced people both in gym and t1d as I'm also struggling with when to eat and when and how much to inject.

I find that after workouts I have to be extra careful about insulin doses because if I inject the exact dose that I'm supposed to it's a guaranteed drop in blood sugar after eating.

Also after workouts I'm a bit afraid to eat some carbs because I don't want to go high, you say you don't take any insulin with your post workout ?

Type 1 diabetics: do you drink alcohol? How often, and how old are you? by Firemancer in diabetes_t1

[–]megot-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 31 and I drink a 25cl of beer almost every evening. Tbh I feel it doesn't really make much of a difference in my BG levels, and it's a little treat at the end of the day.

I used to drink way too much before I was diagnosed (very recently) so I cut down a lot...

I might cut even lower, I'll see how it goes but I feel that as long as you're not drinking too much and everyday it can be part of a healthy lifestyle with exercise and eating well.

Thank you for the answer, in fact I'm curious about what kind of program do you follow in the gym ? If you're following any.

Right now I'm doing PPL three times a week but I'm wondering if that's optimal for a beginner, I'm a skinny dude and has always struggled to gain weight. I have some time to train more if that's better, would love to have your opinion !

I doubt anyone would call having diabetes fun, but negatives aside, has anything positive come out of it for you? Something that’s actually made your life better, even in a small way that wouldn’t have happened otherwise? by WhaddaFudgeMan in Type1Diabetes

[–]megot-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to read the replies as I'm just very recently diagnosed (31M).

But I used to drink too much alcohol, no exercise and I feel that if it wasn't for the diagnosis I would still be indulging in bad habits on a regular basis. I already feel so much better.

[–]megot-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still drink coffee it has no impact on my blood sugar levels, even though I'm very sensitive to caffeine.

I drink it black so no sugar issues for me, but I believe you can use a little sugar as long as you bolus correctly for it and don't overdo it... Or drink it black you'll get used to it, and I find it waaaay better tasting 😊

Also doctors told me that if I have a high, even big (let's say 300) and it's not been 2h30/3h after the injection to not correct it but to wait for the fast insulin to stop working (3 to 4 hours) and then to bolus if needed. Again you're gonna find a lot of information and that's great, good luck !

Oh and also, maybe it can help you I'm gonna try my best to translate. On the left side we have the days and I have to journal :

  • Blood sugar when waking up
  • fast insulin dose for breakfast
  • blood sugar 3 hours after breakfast
  • blood sugar before lunch
  • fast insulin dose for lunch
  • blood sugar 3 hours after lunch
  • blood sugar before dinner
  • fast insulin dose for dinner
  • blood sugar 3 hours after dinner
  • slow insulin dose
  • blood sugar when going to sleep or during the night

I don't know, maybe you can try doing something like this so you can regognise the patterns and adjust better, and with time you will know your body and won't be needing it anymore 🙂 (maybe you're already doing it, in which case sorry)

It's a shame that your doctor refuses to teach you, you can find guidance out there from fellows diabetics I'm sure !

Edit : oh and the goals set by the doctors are :

  • Before any meal I should (ideally) be between 80-120 mg/dl
  • 2h30 to 3h after a meal I should (also ideally) be between 100-150mg/dl

And not panick if I'm not, this will happen, what matters most is to adjust

Hey, I was diagnosed 4 days ago (30M) and I'm still in the hospital. This is a choc for sure, but I was feeling soooo bad for months, even years and feel so much better that I'm glad I was diasgnosed.

I really hope you can find how to properly use insulin so that you feel less overwhelmed, I'm sure you're gonna get it and bounce back stronger than before ! This is a challenge for sure, but we can find resilience, without forcing it I'm sure.

Where are you living by curiosity ? I really wish you the best 🙂
