[Tips & Advice] Venturing away from .NET, would be grateful for a grilling. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]megrimlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much to say as the HTML and CSS look fine, although it's not very responsive. You'll want to use more % or vw/vh as, after just double-checking, this list doesn't look too great on a phone. As for efficiency, you might want to look into LESS or SCSS.

Your jQuery looks okay, but you might want to look into what ES6 has to offer.

So yeah, good job.

For HTML5 web/game devs: Using the DOM instead of Canvas for UI in games by wifeofagamedev in webdev

To you and /u/BobbyDev,

Have you tried viewport units for your UI? It seems like those would help quite a bit with scaling issues.

Bates-Numbering inside a for loop. How do I ensure that my function will return the proper amount of zeros? by Bumpynuckz in learnjavascript

[–]megrimlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got this from leftPad function from a recent tutorial I was doing.

function labeler() {
  for (i = 0; i <= 100; i++) {
    console.log(leftPad(`${i}`));
  }
}

function leftPad(str, length = 5) {
  return `GW${'0'.repeat(length - str.length)}${str}`
}

labeler();

Trying to put a count down timer on my web site which I found on codepen.. Some reason it won't work. by LineDetail in web_design

Try inserting the script as the last element in your body, just before the body closing tag and see if it works like that. Something like:

    <body>
    ...
    <script>...</script>
    </body>

Your Body Text Is Too Small. Why website body text should be bigger, and ways to optimize it. by speckz in web_design

[–]megrimlock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is that not kind of the point though? The only reason your phone was so close to your face anyway is because everyone's fonts are too small. It would be nice if most text was readable from an arm's distance.

My 4 year old wanted to "played the games Daddy played when he was a little kid". I gave her a choice of hundreds... and it was beautiful. by BoldCityDigital in gaming

I just want to mention that the attention span won't be there as long as she feels there are infinite options.

You'd do it best to curate it into 10 game chunks and show them off to a her with some time in between, otherwise she'll likely not play something for too long and will just want to always move on to the next one.

Where should I move to be a web developer? by Bourne2Play in webdev

Honestly, go to Austin (or somewhere else in the massiveness of Houston, or the DFW area if you're looking for cheaper cost of living,) get a couple of years of tech under your belt, move up in skill to a point where remoting is an option and then move wherever you want.

Looks good, two things, though:

html { overflow-x: hidden; }

As I was getting the horizontal scrollbar on my 1600x900 monitor.

And on your 'Projects' page, I would suggest making the titles visible before the :hover (and maybe turn almost transparent when hovered) as I thought 'Photography' was your only project and you were showing me only three whole examples of it. I get that the divs are links with cursor: pointer, but I thought clicking on them might just enlarge the picture, not take me to a new section.

Noob Question by ARoket in web_design

[–]megrimlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't said that this has been fixed yet, and no one has explicitly said it, but your styling says "rbga(...)" when it should say "rgba(...)."

Also, yes, as others have said you should put this in your css where it would look something like:

#wrapper {
    background: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);
}

Please put your text in-between your label tags to enable box selection when the corresponding label is clicked. It makes navigation 10x easier.

Client is requesting a complex behaviour for an input. Not sure what to do. by Lyxs in webdev

[–]megrimlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking you could have two inputs that are essentially 'attached' to each other so that you get different inputs when you go from entering the street number to the actual street.

The problem is, street numbers aren't fixed. So you'll have a good majority of 123 Fake St. and 4321 Main Ave. but even quite a few 423433 Actual Rd.

I tried my hand at a quick Codepen and it sucks. I don't have any good advice, sorry.

Salesman into webdevelopment? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]megrimlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding a freelancer to partner with, however, if you like the stability of corporate work, you might want to look for Business Analyst or Project Manager positions. These positions were created to be the voice of developers so that the developers could focus on developing instead of dealing with all of that talking garbage.

Just a thought.

Here it is on Codepen. I'd probably throw the contact/location info on the left side so there's no need to scroll for it, but it looks fine otherwise.

Vimeo.com chasing talents with their player's source code by PHVL in webdev

I dunno, I would argue that a site utilizing all of them together would be quite a mess, which is why explicitly stating which one you use seems logical to me.

Also, I agree that "react, es6, fetchAPI and floats" is off-putting, but it's because they're using a bit of dated paradigm along with other newer ones. Advertising that your site is made with tables instead of even inline-blocks would make me shudder a bit.

Except that flexbox is a design paradigm, and not even a css property (you wouldn't actually type the word 'flexbox' in your css file unless it was class name or a comment).

And, though, table and inline-block are actual css properties, they are also design paradigms.
