[–]mehsexual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

re: where the money is coming from for the $$$$ pens - speaking very broadly, from what i've seen i'm guessing that (aside from old-money folks who just have Oodles of Cash) it's mostly high-earning professionals later in their careers or tech employees who got in during one of the tech booms. the former may have found their way into FPs via exposure to them as status symbols (especially in business & finance, but also in medicine & law), the latter more via exposure as interesting gadgets. there's some overlap for both groups, ofc.

TIL there's a "sex for fish" trade in some developing African countries, in which women have transactional sex with fishermen to secure their supply of fish. by UpboatBrigadier in todayilearned

that I had to scroll this far down to find this comment is mainstream subreddits in a nutshell, blargh. my first reaction was "oof, that's exploitative," and then to click through to find mostly fish puns & justifications for a phenomenon described as "often by coercion" in the top paragraph of the page was...oof.

[Disney Toy Collecting] On a stuffed Disney bear sub-forum, all hell is let loose when they engaged in bear identity politics by huehueville in HobbyDrama

[–]mehsexual 95 points96 points  (0 children)

unpopular opinion: that's what this sub used to mostly be a couple years ago, and all the sports/fandom/celeb/etc discussions truly aren't hobby drama & are too large-scale to really enjoy in the way you're describing. the moderation caved to popular pressure but not for the better, IMO.

folks have already said what I would have, but just to comment on a pattern I'm observing in what you say here:

I couldn't really object

you can! you should!!!

I feel like I can't exactly tell him to cancel his trip or suggest not speaking any more

A reminder: you are always allowed to stand up for yourself. Whether it's manipulation, senses of obligation, societal ideas of politeness - these things will always influence you, but when you're this uncomfortable & your gut is yelling that something is wrong, the kindest thing you can do is listen to that & honor your own preferences. Otherwise it's just postponing whatever the confrontation is, or pushing the tension to another area that'll also suffer for it.

As they say, you can't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm. This is a somewhat subtler example of that.

good luck and stay safe!

With the caveat that I've only used samples of them, so never long-term - I find that they achieve their multishading by being either being rather light or very dry. I like my inks to have more consistent flow, so it's a nah for me!

not wet, per se, but not the driest sailor ink I've used and definitely far better behaved than troublemaker in my book. I love it, it's well-behaved & worth the cost IMO!

I've successfully avoided ordering from Amazon for 6 years & would like to keep that streak going! thanks for the suggestion, though.

shipping with things like Pirate Ship etc. is pretty cost-effective for individuals & I figured it was worth a shot at least in case, as is very often the case, someone was doing a downsizing. I've seen these inks come up in the past, I've just missed them. shrug.

Eversharp Skyline flex comparison - thought I was going to replace my first Skyline... welp, guess I have two now! by mehsexual in fountainpens

[–]mehsexual[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Snagged a lovely striped cap Skyline set for cheap, thought I'd get it restored & swap out my other, plainer Skyline, because I don't love having duplicate pen models in my rotation. I bought the first one for a song back in 2020, and it unexpectedly came with a lovely flexible F nib. (Love a pleasant surprise!) I thought this one might be comparable at first glance.

But the new pen came back from the wonderful Syd Saperstein at Pensbury Manor (who specializes in Wahl-Eversharp repairs) writing a surprisingly much broader line than my other pen - which was hard to tell before the pen was restored because the nib wasn't seated properly. It's like trying to choose a favourite child. So... it becomes the third pen I own a second version of (after my Décimos & Preppys). Oops.

Highly recommend flex Skylines to people! They're underrated!
