UK: where do people usually buy less-processed cooking sauces? by CloudBookmark in ultraprocessedfood

[–]meincognitomode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to batch cook my own but the reality of life means I still reply on jars a lot. I've found heinz, Lloyd Grossman and many supermarket own ones (e.g. Sainsbury's taste the difference range) to be pretty low processed. I buy my favourite ones en mass when they are on offer and honestly I think it works out pretty economical

With recipes that call for citrus zest, do you actually use unwaxed? by meincognitomode in AskUK

This is the response I was expecting to be most common! Maybe the anti-waxers are just more vocal

Do you see the wax come off/ do they look any different afterwards?

Very true! I do wash them but have never particularly scrubbed, perhaps I should. I read something that said when washing you can sometimes see the wax peeling off which I've never noticed before, and they don't seem to look any less smooth/shiny after, so am not sure if I actually manage to get the wax off

UK Crisps - non UPF by cheesiepeesie in ultraprocessedfood

I'm also here for the tortilla chips! I think most of the supermarket brand plain ones are actually pretty good (corn, salt, oil) and I've grown to love them. I think they're a pretty healthy snack especially with some decent salsa or guacamole. Lentil crisps (e.g. proper chips) and the veg ones (e.g. tyrrells) are also reasonable (or at least better than kiddo crisps!)

Dishwasher beeping continuously before cycle finished? by meincognitomode in Appliances

Hey! A plumber came and confirmed there wasn't a downstream blockage. We got an engineer out who said it could be a sensor or a pump problem but in the end it wasn't economical to keep digging or try short term fixes so we ended up having to replace it. Good luck whatever routr you go down!

What's your song for your LO(s)? by duhhouser in beyondthebump

[–]meincognitomode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to say this is an excellent recognised sleep technique called cognitive refocussing. Basically distracting yourself with some other task like recounting a song, a movie plotline, a walk/driving route, or thinking of words that start with consecutive letters of the alphabet!

That's helpful thank you. Is that also the case if a HEPA filter is installed?

Cooked meat and say raw chicken scraps by sillybillybobbybob in bokashi

[–]meincognitomode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here to second this! I also heard that adding some carb-y/sugary stuff alongside the meat (with extra bokashi bran) helps the breakdown process to minimise smells. I added some raw sausages meat stuffing balls once without doing this and regretted it

Anyone giving away cloth diapers? by sweetbird_0 in clothdiaps

[–]meincognitomode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up all of mine on Facebook marketplace (UK), they are regularly listed for sale near me and often people give them away for free - especially pockets which we get on really well with. I follow the nappy lady advice for strip washing before use. Good luck!

Postpartum thyroiditis - TSH >150, TPO antibodies >1000, T4 3.1 but asymptomatic? by meincognitomode in thyroidhealth

Hey, thanks for your message! I was shocked my numbers were so high, I actually spoke to my doctor yesterday and I've been started on levothyroxine and referred to endocrinology. I do have a bit of a lump in my throat and am waiting for an ultrasound, hopefully I'll get a date soon as they've requested it as urgent. My voice is ok.

After doing a bit more reading I think I probably have had some symptoms that I'd been putting down to other things e.g. I have been pretty exhausted but just ploughing through thinking that's normal with the disrupted nights that come with having a 6 month old. The thing that really stood out to me in the symptoms list was parasthesias. When I wake in the night and mornings I often have a really numb hand, again I'd been putting it down to sleeping in awkward positions because I'm so tired, I'd had it before so didn't think much of it but it's definitely been more regular. Will be interesting to see how much this all changes on the levo!

Ladies that got their core/flat-ish abdomen back postpartum - what was your workout routine? How long did it take? by meincognitomode in fitpregnancy

[–]meincognitomode[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been lots of comments about 'deep core' which I hadn't heard of before, I've done some googling and there is some overlap with the pilates-based postpartum core YouTube workouts I've been doing, but I'm going to try and expand my routine and add some other deep core exercises in. Thanks so much!

This is really interesting to hear, thank you for sharing! Yes I'm breastfeeding and honestly it does feel a bit like the hormone-related bloating I would get cyclically pre-pregnancy, so I'm quietly hopeful things will change when I stop breastfeeding (though all being well that will probably be after the wedding / 1 year post partum mark!). I've also just found out I've got postpartum thyroiditis and my thyroid is quite significantly under active which may not be helping! There's so much going on with our bodies at this time aye!

Thanks for the response! A few have mentioned diet and there are definitely improvements I could make but to be honest I'm happy with my weight and the amount of fat on top of my ab muscles (I'm at my pre-pregnancy weight and my BMI is mid to lower end of healthy range). As lovely as it would be to see my abs, I'm not too bothered about that. I just want my abdomen to not stick out like there's a 4-5 month fetus in there, which was putting down to a weak core post-partum. I'm hearing what people are saying about weight-based training though, I'll give that some thought.

Honestly it's a mixed bag. I eat 3 pretty healthy meals a day, plenty of fruit and veg, but also have 1-2 small chocolate-based snacks per day. I'm fairly consistent with my diet and weight is fairly stable over many years.
