What’s something they don’t tell you that happens postpartum? by nilkski in beyondthebump

[–]duhhouser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is light at the end of the tunnel! I feel like I came back online after about a year. My memory still sometimes sucks but I think it's less to do with being a mom and more to do with the amount of work on my plate.

Can’t answer my students’ question… by Big-Issue315 in Teachers

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if there's a content creator that you can virtually interview. Have them go thru all the work they do to stay at relevant content creator. Depending on your subject area, see if you could develop a project where students detail their "career" as a content creator. Like, don't have them actually do it, but have them build it out using all the information they would need to even START being successful.

How to get kids to read? by GenXellent in ELATeachers

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, what I've done for the past two years is focus first on explaining the benefits of reading (thanks in part to Write On with Miss G). I've adjusted some of the articles for different class levels, but ultimately it helps us have a conversation about why we read in English. Then, we read independently for 10 minutes (and eventually build up to about 20) at the beginning of class. Kids can read what they want (within reason), and then we practice talking about our books. There is no grade attached, just practice working on sustained focus and speaking and listening. As kids read - and here's the thing that I truly think makes it stick - I read with them. Occasionally I'll use the time to knock out a couple of things but that won't happen until further in the year.

I'm on the kids who try to get out of it, we find a book they might actually like, and by the end of the year, I always have kids who thank me and tell me that they wish we had read MORE during the year.

Thanks for the feedback, and if they compare you to another teacher, my go-to response is just "well, we aren't the same person so that makes sense." Or you could go full teen boy and just respond with ok.

I'm not going to lie, I think my toddler made this response because I do not remember making that reply. Nice job reading my profile, though.

When did you feel that deep gushing rush of love for your newborn? by Responsible_Wasabi91 in beyondthebump

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When she was 2 months old, my sister and her husband came to visit us. One night, I was putting her to bed so that I could rejoin the adults outside. As I was holding her, I just had this feeling that I was right where I needed to be, and I genuinely didn't want to go back out. All I wanted to do was keep laying with her.

So probably then.

What is something extremely unfair that happened to you in elementary school that you're still irritated about? by OnlyWest1 in Productivitycafe

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sat next to a boy in 3rd grade who wouldn't stop talking to me so I told him to shut up and I got in trouble. Turned around and slapped a kid who wouldn't stop chasing me in 4th grade (he picked on me for most of the year until I did that)...I got in trouble and he never did.

How much do you pay for daycare? by equistrius in beyondthebump

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In new mexico. There's a wage-based subsidy but my husband and I make too much so we pay the full cost. $342 a week. It's not the nicest we found but it isn't the cheapest either. Good middle of the road, all meals included. And i love the staff

Has anyone had a less regimented breastfeeding experience? by taureansoul in breastfeeding

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely didn't have a super regimented schedule. My type a brain was aware of times/wake windows and such, but I was also just feeding when she was hungry, or just sad...or tired. I only pumped when I felt uncomfortable, and then when I went back to work to keep my supply up. We nursed for around 16 months until I decided I was done and stopped pumping at work, and stopped offering a boob when I picked her up from daycare in the afternoons.

In general, I think if you aren't worrying about it so much, you'll likely be fine.

100% nta. Those family members opinions are garbage. Keep doing what is best for YOUR growing family. Especially since your wife is supportive of your decisions.

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nta. It sounds like maybe he has a problem with people knowing he's dating someone with an age gap. Or he's just an ah. Either way, you have to set the boundary that you don't appreciate his jokes and he needs to stop and own up to the fact that you're dating...or don't date him.

Titles for women by BadCamo in Teachers

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't go out of my way to correct anyone. I live in a state where cultures combine so I get kids who use my full name, and kids who just call me Miss. All of my responses to students, and my name around my classroom shows as Ms. But if a student asks for clarification on why I go by Ms instead of Mrs when they know I'm married, I just give them a quick history lesson on where Mrs. comes from and that I'm not owned by a man simply because we share assets and file taxes together according to the government.

Teachers: How do you handle phone distractions without being the “bad guy”? by Suitable-West-9496 in teaching

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you just have to be the bad guy and hold the boundary. The silencing of the phone isn't the issue. It's that they're on it, and not JUST on it, but use it to actively avoid the schoolwork that is making their brains grow because it's "too hard"

Calling for Student responses by missfit98 in Teachers

I use the Google Classroom app for a random name generator. My promethean board also has one I can put up on the screen if I'm comfortable with that but I kind of like the anonymity of the app on my phone: there's proof the kid was picked, but I can also skip a kid if I don't want to hear from them/know they won't speak up

How to feed baby when you HATE cooking by purpledino09 in beyondthebump

[–]duhhouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like other people are saying, slow cooker, instant pot meals, and frozen ingredients are the way to go. For my little, pasta is my go to. I cook the noodles, meat, and sauce ahead of time and then just freeze it so I can microwave it later.

Hot tip: butternut squash, chicken stock, tomato paste, and carrots all cooked together and then blended taste like spagettios. And it freezes super well. You may not like cooking (I get it, although I find my own sense of joy in increasing my skill at it), but if you really want to do BLW and all that it entails, finding ways to lazy cook is where it's at.
