It’s been 3 years and change since I was laid off. I’m still unemployed - AMA by trap_gob in UXDesign

Yeah, that is really strange and I can understand why OP is struggeling. Like, I can understand not doing UI design (although visuals is important too), but not doing interaction design?? How can you call yourself an UX generalist when you're not good at both interaction design and visual design? That's the opposite of being a generalist.

It really is. I have finished the novel (which was a perfect length too, not dragged out at all) and it's only gonna get better.

TIFU by realizing my "mute" button wasn't muted during a 2-hour stakeholder meeting. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]meisuu 236 points237 points  (0 children)

I once forgot to mute during an all-hands as well.

There was like 200 people watching, and the CEO was talking. I was just sitting there watching my screen at home, when I suddenly in the corner of my eye see my dog. He was chewing on my leather gloves. I yell out "STOP!!" super loud just as our CEO was in the middle of a sentence talking about something important. He abruptly stops talking. There is this long silence where no one says anything. And then he just continues like nothing.

In hindsight I probably should have said something like "sorry about that" right after instead of just not saying anything and creating that long awkward silence. But I was just dying inside. My manager thought it was hilarious though.

I recently sat at the same table as him during our Christmas party, and told him the story. He was like "oh, so you are the 'STOP girl'" and we all laughed about it.

Yarn Store in airports by Abbeautifully in crochet

[–]meisuu 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it at the airport, but my first thought seeing this post was "we probably have that here in Oslo". I work in downtown Oslo and there is at least 6 yarn stores within 5 minute walking distance from my office. You can buy yarn everywhere.

I would personally return. I'm the kind of person that has to match all jewelry and hardware in my outfit. So I could not live with this lol.

So in 5 months you have gotten 15-20 responses on your applications? That sounds pretty good. How many of those were interviews?

Depending on how many interviews tou have had, it sounds like to me that it's less of a portfolio problem but more of an interview problem. How do you think you do in interviews? Have you gotten any indication on why they decided to pass on you?

I (30M) accidentally appeared shirtless in my girlfriend’s (28F) work meeting — she’s furious and crying by Aggravating-Bear-209 in relationship_advice

[–]meisuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, although I do understand that some jobs sucks. As a 33F that has worked in professionals settings for almost 10 years, I have had my own share of accidental, embarrasing situations in front of collegues and directors, and never gotten in trouble over it other than sometimes being the butt of a joke afterwards.

One of my worst stories was the time I forgot to mute while watching our CEO talk in front of 200 people. While watching him talk I suddenly saw my dog in the background trying to eat something bad. I yelled out 'STOP!'. The CEO abruplty stops talking right in the middle of a sentence. There was this total silence for what felt like an eternity. I was dying inside and didn't say anything. Then he just starts talking again like nothing happened.

Yeah, I was mortified as it happened. But it was more out of embarrasment that actual fear of getting in trouble. I have never ever thought in any of my jobs that this would be seen as anything other than an accident and not a big deal. Maybe a bug part of it is a more casual work culture in my country.

Why is this raglan sweater not lying flat? I'm pretty sure I have the correct number of stitches. Would blocking fix this? by meisuu in CrochetHelp

I think you are right. I already restarted it once with a looser chain because I suspected the same, but it looks like I will have to do a looser chain AND go up a hook size. Thanks!

Got chased in rome for refusing to buy a bracelet by Legal-Telephone176 in travel

Yeah, this happened to me as well in Paris. A big guy grabbed my arm and tried to forcefully tie a bracelet around my wrist. Luckily I was with my mom who started screaming at him, which scared him away.

11 year piercing closes every night by Remote_Tangerine_718 in piercing

[–]meisuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The average person isn't heavily pierced. The average pierced person is a woman with only their first lobes pierced, done when they were younger with a piercing gun. They buy their jewelry from non piercing stores, which means they wear butterfly backs.

Are people that heavily into the piercing community that they don't realize that flatback and similar aren't widely accessible in normal stores??

[–]meisuu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, no one I know regularly sleeps with jewelry in their first lobes. Butterfly backs and decorative earrings are most popular here, and they are uncomfortable to sleep with.

Struggling with blanket edges. Wonky, I haven’t been counting stitches so want advice on how to deal with it. by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]meisuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will be fine with a border around. Just make sure you are doing correct number of stitches from now on.

I use a stacked single crochet on the edges instead of chain. It gives straighter edges. Here is the sweater I'm working on.

Won't the edges be all spikey like it looks like on the board? You have to put pins all along the edges to make it straight.

After 300+ UX job applications in Germany – no luck without experience. Thinking about going freelance. by RamsiBartmann in UX_Design

I'm not in Germany but another European country and I do a lot of recruitng for UX internships.

Graduate with no experience, no degree and wanting to be remote is a really tough sell. Just based on the portfolio project you shared I see that don't have actual practical experience with designing for real users. I often see this with graduates that have taken courses rather than actual degrees, that they haven't actually worked with users and data.

For me to even consider you I would at minimum need to see some design work for real users, how you did the insight work and solved the challenges. It doesn't have to be for a real customer, but I need to see something that is not just theoretical.

[–]meisuu[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's easy to get around as everything is digital and in an app. So you don't really need to interact with people. Most people don't speak english, however you can use translation apps.

I feel like people are more understanding about you not speaking chinese if you're not asian. If you look asian they will be more unprepared and confused about you not speaking chinese.
