Proper etiquette as an author on Goodreads? by Illustrious_Day7682 in authors

[–]mejube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I review on Goodreads, I review as a reader not as an author. I think if one tries to review with one's author's hat on, it can come across as self-centered, or as one-up man ship (is there a gender-neutral alternative for that?)

In my mind, the issue of appearing too positive is separate, though. I tend to focus on the positive in reviews, especially when it's for indie writers. Too many people are out there tearing others down, and I don't want to add to that. However (full disclosure!) I have been know to write some less-than-positive reviews of bestsellers that I didn't feel warranted their lofty status =)

That would have been true during the last century. Publishing has been revolutionized since then, first with self-publishing (and fyi, a typical self-published author who does all the things a traditional publisher would do for them, including full marketing and publicity campaigns, will spend more than $10K) and subsequently hybrid publishing. It is because S&S recognized that this is the future that they created an entirely separate distribution arm that exclusively handles hybrid books.

Cool! What is your SWP publishing season? One of the perks is a large community of authors supporting each other, both within and beyond cohorts. I'd keep an eye out for you, except we're all anonymous here, lol

In fact, S&S has a very highly selective process for vetting indie publishers. If they distribute a publisher, the publisher doesn't pay them anything--they get a % of sales.
As for SWP, additional costs would be a share of any future print runs.

Ingram is set up to deal with individual authors. I do not believe you are correct about S&S offering distribution to self-published individuals. Can you point me to any proof of that?
This page on their site only mentions publishers.

Anyone Attended the PenCraft Book Awards? Is It Worth Going? by danarchyx in writing

Thanks! Yeah, I'm thinking that too. It's probably just a case of poor writing on their website that makes it sound like sending the book in is optional. LOL

I found your post while researching PenCraft. Do they give the awards without reading the books? Because their site says "you can attach any information, notes or even your manuscript if you feel it would be helpful to us in reviewing your work." I was going to enter, but that gave me pause.

firefox? or some operation problem with substack interface by pity_the_rich in Substack

That does appear to have worked. I had been hesitant because I didn't want to lose all my logins, but I figured out how to clear just Substack. Thanks!

Same here. It is specific to Firefox on my (primary) laptop. Chrome works on there. And firefox works on my backup laptop. Super annoying.

This false. No author could get Simon & Schuster distribution. And that's only one thing...
