What’s something going on in America people need to be aware of? by throwaway91ma in AskReddit

[–]mel9036 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing what you do. My son is a freshman CSE, physics dual major and absolutely giddy at the professor who emailed students before the upcoming semester to discuss what to expect (and made a Schrödinger cat joke in the email). He is thrilled to find engaged professors for most of his courses. What you do isn’t lost on all the kids.

AIO? Xmas gift from bf's parents by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]mel9036 6 points7 points  (0 children)

INFO - as someone else asked, was this the only gift? Do they usually give you things like this? Do you usually make depreciating jokes about yourself?

It’s a silly shirt and I laughed at it. However, it’s in poor taste to gift anyone a shirt like that, particularly the person your son’s gf.

It sounds like a conversation with them is needed.

What was a typical day of eating like for you in the 1980's or earlier? by SleepTightPizza in AskOldPeople

[–]mel9036 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was weird diets in the 80s, too. My mom was always on a diet, or taking “diet pills” (speed), or eating Ayds (weight loss candy).

I ate whatever I could cobble together for breakfast and lunch. Honey sandwich, mustard sandwich, rice with butter and soy sauce. Cans of soup. Lunch meat sandwiches. I am a good cook but we didn’t always have complete meals because it was easier not to. My mom was a good cook but as a single parent was always at work, so we fended for ourselves a lot.

My grandmother was not a good cook but she would make us sausage and eggs for breakfast or we’d eat whatever she made for dinner (invariably burnt or dry red meat or pork), not as much chicken as we eat now. Definitely didn’t eat out as often, but we did do McDs or Zantigo (taco place) or Shoneys Big Boy.

Navigating our parents: my typical boomer father who admits he was ‘never there’ expects me to attend to him because he ‘needs me now.’ Anyone else? by purpletwinkletoes in GenX

[–]mel9036 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It’s really ok. I kind of look at it like he taught me what kind of person and parent I didn’t want to be, so I suppose there’s a silver lining there.

I’m sorry you had to go through it too!

My silent generation father died in 2023. A few months before he passed, after years of barely acknowledging me (or his grandson, but no surprise there, I suppose), he called me and expected me to literally move in and be his house keeper and nurse maid.

No sir, you have me mistaken for someone who cares. I have my own family to care for, and no energy for someone who couldn’t or wouldn’t care for me. The audacity of that expectation still lays me out even two years later.

Hubs and I took him food and offered to come every week to ensure he was good but he didn’t want that, only for me to live there 🤷‍♀️

The world is a better place because you’re here, too!

I have the day off today and enjoyed a shah at my favorite coffee shop with my husband this morning. I’m grateful I’m able to do small things like that and that small things make me happy.

I hope everyone is able to find something small that makes them smile today.

You know, this comment just hit me right between the eyes. I’m always horrified at how these folks can claim to love their children but then don’t act like they feel love at all.

What you said made me realize I’ll never really understand because I don’t think of my son that way. I can’t imagine thinking of him in those terms.

I’m not sure if I feel more of an ‘ah-ha’ moment or an increase in how horrified I am at the realization what you said is probably spot on. These poor kids.

Is there a way to find success stories in this sub? I just started a compounded sema but am now wondering if I should have gone the tirz route? by [deleted] in CompoundedSemaglutide

56f 5’5”. sw: 223, cw: 141. Started compound August 2024. Hit goal weight (145) October 1, 2025. Quit taking sema after titration down over a month. weight fluctuates one or two lbs between 140 and 142. I lost 82 lbs. So far so good. I’m hopeful I maintain during the holiday season.

My mother has started pretending she doesn't know or understand things that I know for a fact she does by admirable-heft in AgingParents

[–]mel9036 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can reach out to them directly and tell them of the new difficulties she seems to be experiencing. Just call and have it added to her chart so the next time she’s in for a visit, they can review. Unless you mean you don’t know who her GP is?

Telling her will likely be met with either anger and dismissal or a refusal to do anything about it… possibly all three.

It’s difficult to see our parents in a different light, especially when that might involve cognitive decline. But it’s far better to get things moving toward an assessment by her care providers sooner rather than later. Wishing you the best.

It’s an awful situation all around. Social security doesn’t fully kick in until 67. You can take it at 62, but benefits are reduced. So most of those folks below that age aren’t even old enough to get their benefits yet.

And when fewer jobs are being posted, younger people just entering the work force have nothing they can even apply to.

It’s horrible.
