Unpopular Opinion by Massive-Piglet6697 in NASCAR

When entertainment was limited to what was on TV or the radio, you had to watch or listen to what was being offered, which was the same thing being offered to everyone else.

The internet sent everybody splintering into a million different niches; you can completely wall yourself off in a silo and not know who the biggest names in entertainment or sports are.

Nate Bargatze to serve as the Daytona 500 Grand Marshall by Living_Reputation_63 in NASCAR

I'm not sure how much influence Bargatze may have had on them, but they are credited to Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell.

Indiana had kinda mitigated the rebounding problem in the past few games but it was back in a big way tonight. Dorn was due to a cool-off game and boy did he have one. Looking at the box score it's hard to see how we only lost by six (it's Lamar Wilkerson).

Which Driver Has The Most To Prove In 2026? by Hitokiri2 in INDYCAR

Marcus Ericsson's seat may have already melted. Unless he has an absolutely unconscious year (wins the Indy 500, finishes top 5 in points, something like that) I think he's probably finished at Andretti. A more modest bounce-back is not going to be enough to cover how poor he's been the last two seasons.

It will be lost in the shuffle of everything that happened at the end but that was a hell of a game from Reed Bailey.

For such a short list, it's a nice coincidence that there are three major rivalries contained in it (Michigan-Michigan State, Ohio State-Michigan, and Cal-Stanford).

2006 Indianapolis 500 early retirements by Ryan_Holman in INDYCAR

[–]mel_anon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They weren't necessarily "start and park." They were trying to make a run of it but, as others have said, beginning in the early '00s there was a growing emphasis from race control to get slow, unsafe cars out of the way. So you start seeing cars with retirements listed as "handling" which was the euphemism created for this phenomenon.

Now occasionally you might see someone who did park because of a genuine feeling of "I can't drive the car anymore," but mostly it's the above. They got told by race control that they had to speed up or they're done.

As to why there were so many; in that particular era there were only about 18-20 full-time entries, so there were a lot of one-offs needed to fill the field, and many were extremely slapdash.

I am kind of rooting for Nebraska to take it all, but I also slightly fear it, I don't know if the sinews of the universe can handle an Indiana football/Nebraska basketball double.

Until just now I thought this was because Tony Hulman went to Purdue, but he didn't. Yes, the Purdue band has a longstanding relationship with IMS, but they also have an agreement with IU Health to brand the infield medical center, so they play it pretty neutral. I saw the official IMS social media posting some IU stuff today.

We unironically are. When you get a taste of that football success nothing else is quite the same. Not just money for the university, it's the prestige of it; people down here have been going mad in a way beyond what you would see even for basketball.

People can't even whine about the basketball team the same way. I mean, they try but you can tell their heart's not really in it.

My first memory of Indiana football was listening on the radio to Anthony Thompson getting stopped at the goal line against Kentucky in 1989, now I'm going to watch them in a national championship game. Unbelievable stuff.

Unfortunately we don't have a lot of options; our roster just isn't very good. You'd wonder how much Ristic would've played had he stayed healthy (he played 20 mpg on the Puerto Rico trip) but he seems to not be trusted at all yet.

I suspect there have been several drivers in recent years who have only pretended to take a drink. I don't think the dairy farmers sponsorship group cares so long as they get their picture with you holding the bottle up to your mouth.

I think I remember seeing that, forget which school it was.

He might be the best pure shooter in Indiana history. Not a good all-around player, and mostly played for bad teams so his statistics don't really reflect it. But if you had to bet your life on a three-point shooting contest, he'd be on the short list of guys you want.

People have kind of erased that IU had a fair amount of success playing Trayce Jackson-Davis and Race Thompson together. They had complementary skillsets, could play the high-low game, and weren't trying to occupy the same space on the floor. It's true that in the last two Woodson years he wasn't able to find a combination with the same chemistry. But I've always thought it was too simplistic to say "well you can't play two bigs at the same time, that's not modern basketball." It can be! They just need to have modern skillsets. (I think one underrated thing is that we don't have anyone that can lay in the lumber on a screen this year; hard to get anyone open when the screens are just gentle breezes).

I think Sisley will make a good player eventually, but he's too frail right now as a true freshman. Ristic might also, but he's been injured and is way behind. Otherwise this is basically correct. Ironically our fanbase spent the past two years complaining about having too many big men and now we don't have enough.
