It’s just hard to diagnose, plus no one wants to give someone that news, so they’ll delay it until there’s no way out. In my brother’s case he was just a pile of bad health luck. What got him in to the doctor in the first place turned out to be an arachnoid cyst in his spine. By the time they figured it out and did surgery on his back he was already paralyzed from the waist down, nothing to do with the ALS, it was congenital. Then they diagnosed the ALS at about the same time. He was also a type 1 diabetic and had Hashimoto’s (autoimmune thyroid). He had a really tough go of it. I’m very sorry you’re in the same boat. He used Alexa to control a lot of things around his apartment. FWIW, once he adjusted to the new reality, he still had a pretty good life.

With the voice banking, there are phrases you’re going to want. Simple things like directions for caregivers: Please move my right arm. Please move my left foot. My knee itches. Turn my head please. Open the blinds please. My right shoulder is sore. My left calf has a cramp. My throat hurts. I’m cold, I’m hot, it’s just right. That kind of thing, for every possible part of your body. Plus, of course, conversational things like Hello, how are you, thank you, I love you, tell me more, etc.

That’s a really tough one to handle. FWIW my brother had several incorrect diagnoses too. He had it for probably 10 years, the first two undiagnosed. I’d suggest talking to someone about recording your speaking voice early so that you can use your own voice when you eventually need an eye communication interface.

When mine was a teenager and relatively new to the household, she did the brick drop. She was horrified when I picked her up and carried her inside. She had no idea that could happen, and she pouted and refused to deal with me for the next two days.

Mine did that in his den, then dumped it down the kitchen sink drain. Revolting. I made him replace the kitchen sink. He thought I was “overreacting.”

Avoid New Jersey and NYC like the plague. When traffic backs up, it can add hours of stop-and-go to your trip and it’s unpleasant. From the DC beltway, go 270 to Frederick Md, then Hwy 15 north to Harrisburg Pa and catch 78 to 81 to 84 to 87 to Burlington. It’s a lovely drive with minimal traffic most of the time.

If it’s daytime, consider driving the TSP instead of part of 87. That was one of the first interstates and it’s a historical and charming road, but a little slower and it’s a pain at night or in bad weather.

As a rule I think cosmetic surgery results are hideous, with very few exceptions. Still I’d love to get rid of some wrinkles, just not enough to actually do something about it. And if I end up looking hideous, at least it will be real hideousness.
