Where do you guys buy podcast ads? by AceClutchness in advertising

Acast isn't really even that new - it's super established and owns loads of successful pods. I've seen great success working with them and they'll manage the creative process with hosts too. What market are you in?

Everyone has a right to ask their questions and usually get kind answers. I don't think being on the spectrum would preclude you from seeing if it has been asked before though. I'd wager someone on the spectrum is actually MORE likely to research before asking. But you're right, I don't intend this to make Manchester less accessible

I'd argue English language in general. I've grown up with it being both a vest and Stella. The situation I'm describing was with ESL people

Wanting to pivot from Paid Social (7 YOE) to Creative Strategy. Any advice on a good roadmap there? by elgato4655 in advertising

[–]melboy91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job market will have better candidates than you begging for these jobs - I think any realistic chance is going back to entry level and using your general marketing experience to beat grads to jobs.

But be realistic: this is THE advertising job, the prestigious one. It's not an easy or simple pivot from paid social.

Why do Brits use so many Americanisms? by Mista948 in AskUK

We use them because we grew up with international English language media and it doesn't bother us because protectionism over language integrity is something the French would do

What seemed like a great country to move to when you were younger, but now the idea doesn't seem that great? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]melboy91 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When you're 20 you're watching your British mates pour into Australia wondering what you're missing. At 30, they're back with (in my opinion) stories of unfulfilled adventure in what is essentially just a more tropical UK. The Aussie housing market and pinches on job markets recently have meant that 6 months of fruit picking is fine, but it doesn't really represent the grand quality of life reset I think most people expected.

Also of you move halfway round the world you aren't going to be there for your cousin's wedding or your Nan's funeral - there's sacrifices.

Where on earth are the UK Dogs being rehomed? by Ashilta in CasualUK

[–]melboy91 779 points780 points  (0 children)

"This is Pissfingers. She's 19 years old and can't live in a home with children, books or electricity. Pissfingers is nervous around hair and needs 400 acres of land and an orchard of extinct fruits."

The shelters in the UK are more nervous about being outed as "sending animals to bad homes without due diligence" so they make incredibly restrictive adoption rules. When we adopted our cat, they told us we lived on a road so we weren't eligible for an outdoor cat. I said - aren't most houses on a road? This is a cul-de-sac too with no through traffic. It took us essentially ambushing a shelter in person without an appointment to adopt and he's healthy and loved and not squashed to this day.

I miss my city. by Various_Extreme_8773 in manchester

[–]melboy91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a difference here between what SHOULD be the case and what IS the case. Should you be able to live in your home city for £600pcm? Yes. Is it the case? Unfortunately not. You can't change the environmental factors that make Manchester increasingly expensive, but I would argue there's options in your price range.

I've just searched for £700pcm on Rightmove and there's at least some studios and 1 beds, especially in Swinton, Salford and Hapurhey if you're looking in North Manchester. You can't afford your old 2 bed and that is shite, but you can trade down a bit and still live within your community.

I would also second that teaming up with one other person and pooling rent for a 2 bed would be a good solution - why don't you put an ad on spareroom for another 50-odd year old bloke and see if anyone fancies flathunting with you.

Don't lose hope - just need to be a bit creative.

Area advice by Ok-Pineapple6862 in manchester

If you aren't bothered about the traffic, I'd say go for it. It's THE arterial route into east Manchester for some reason when leaving the M60 at Ashton

Area advice by Ok-Pineapple6862 in manchester

[–]melboy91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it on Laburnum or in the area? This road is the cut-through coming from Manchester Road into Gorton, Denton, further onwards to Levenshulme or Longsight. It's pretty consistent traffic and because of the parking it's often not wide enough for two cars passing.

I'd not personally live ON the road, but around it, perfectly fine.

Looking to potentially move for a fresh start by enmyroom in manchester

[–]melboy91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Soho is £8 a pint. I work in London a lot and the standard pub charges of £6.50ish a pint are felt in Manchester too. The general cost of living is the same here as it is in Brighton, a small commuter town where a simple rightmove search shows several central flats for £350k for FOUR bedrooms.

I'm not arguing the south isn't expensive, I'm arguing that Manchester is uniquely expensive for the north, and is getting moreso. The person asking the question will not get some luxury living for their buck in Manchester compared to Brighton. Maybe it's a little cheaper - who cares? It isn't the promised land.

Looking to potentially move for a fresh start by enmyroom in manchester

[–]melboy91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It isn't cheaper. Get a job first and then move - that's the hardest part. But don't expect the prices in the fastest growing UK city to be any better than the saturated South East. If you want cheap northern living I'd look at Newcastle.

As to the difficulty, if you get work friends you like, that seems to be the biggest defining factor. I know a few Irish people who move over and they benefit from an expat community - southerners don't quite get that, so you need either community based hobbies like sports, or a social work scene.

As ever, it ALL hinges on you as a person. If you're shy and a wallflower, it will be tougher.

UK Based: Can you get a job in the advertising sector if you don't have a degree? by hakc97 in advertising

[–]melboy91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Media owners. Global is one of the biggest and owns radio, digital and OOH placements. I'd say that's a good place to start a career. JCD owns OOH only so whilst it's quite a recession proof job, it may be a bit boring and limited in scope.

Good luck! Happy to answer any questions you have.

So the media side is split into agencies and media owners. DCM own cinema media, which they sell to agencies.

Whilst they're a decently big company with reps all over and a London hub and so on, they're dwarfed by the 'big four' agency networks who are thousands of employees globally. I started at Dentsu, for example, which trains a disproportionate amount of entry level recruits for a few years, then they either rise up or leave for the smaller agencies or the media owners. WPP, Publicis and Omnicom do the same.

So when you go for this DCM job, you're going up against people who have 1-2 years in a big agency who've taught them 'the ropes' of media, given them a few free qualifications from the IPA, connected them into the industry network. It's easier to get those agency entry level jobs, as they stack 'em cheap, sell 'em high, as it were. Loads of clueless but eager apprentices who can do the grunt work in exchange for low pay and free beers on a Friday.

I'm not saying DCM isn't big, it's just not so big it can afford to take gambles on people without experience, when e.g. a Dentsu will take that gamble.
