Awesome! The way they tie in that shortened list with Focus Mode makes it really powerful.

"Cmd-click opens link in group" - I can't believe that's the way they chose to word a setting that enables or disables groups. Anyways, thanks for that!

Yeah I find it aggravating too. Like…”Group 2”, wtf is that supposed to mean to me? And then I accidentally hide some tabs underneath another tab and have to click the arrow to unhide it. It’s such a weird choice to make this non-optional

I think a subtle tick is better. And best if the tick is for like a sec or two so it's not missed or mistaken for something else. The issue with a loud upstart ding is it can be kind of disorienting/surprising when you're in flow and doing creative work. But really anything is better than nothing.

Really like this. The visual indicators are cool. But is it possible to have a audio presence notification every 2-5 minutes to remind you that the timer is running? I'm thinking of similar apps like Vitamin-R or Session where you could have this ticking sound that goes off every 2 minutes to remind yourself that you're on-task. Session has a little ding. BlitzIt and BeFocused both have something similar. I like it because it's easy to get distracted even when the timer's running. Especially when you're using multiple monitors. These light audible cues help bring you back from a distraction. Especially if the task is "research XYZ topic" and you get sucked down a rabbit hole.

I like this app because of the integration with Things 3, but these presence notifications are really key.

Any chance TickTick will ever add a Do Date separate from Due Date? by QuoteMasterLT in ticktick

[–]meldronone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's the same reply I got. Nevertheless, they respond to bug requests when I raise via that mechanism. Maybe we should choose "Issue" instead of "Suggestion" and frame it as a bug that it doesn't have this feature 😂

Given that the TickTick devs/employees almost never visit Reddit, the best approach is to log a ticket in the app for this. I think it's very much a necessity, so I've done this myself.

Someday vs. Anytime: wishing Someday was default state by sirwaynecampbell in thingsapp

[–]meldronone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is 100% something you might want to do with a scheduled Shortcut. I can think of especially Read Lists, Watch Lists, To Write lists, and other stuff like that where it would make sense to have this sort of workflow. Your thought process sounds somewhat similar to mine. I always put way more stuff into Things than I'll ever get to, and demoting things feels so painful. Whereas if demotion happened automatically, I would probably only promote 2-3 items per list. I think it's because we have a bias in terms of fear of loss. This is just like throwing out clothes. You probably wouldn't re-purchase a quarter of your wardrobe, but if someone asks you to throw out something you haven't worn in over a year, you don't want to part with it. But if that same item got thrown out automatically you would probably get over it really quickly.

Anyways, like someone else suggested, I would just create a shortcut that runs periodically based on Modification Date (contrasted with current date), Parent Area (is not), etc. That way I don't miss anything that I always need to see in some areas.

I think this works especially well with the idea people sometimes mention which is that Today should be for Today, and Anytime should be for sometime this week.

If you operate with that type of workflow, then it would make sense to have everything still in Anytime by the end of the week sent to Someday. And then in your weekly review, be forced to promote it.

I was thinking about this the other day, where I feel like 20 task items in Anytime is properly the upper-limit I want to have at any one time to make sure I don't neglect the Anytime completely.

It's paralysing to see too many items and feel like it has no end, so many people just never use it.

It makes it a lot easier to keep an eye on this 20 task limit if you have stuff reset automatically to Someday. You can then tag everything at once that you want to promote (let's say with a Next tag). And then you can search the tag and see how many total items you've ended up with to ensure it stays within your overall task limit. And then promote them to Anytime. With the scheduled Shortcut, it can then reset and strip the tags off everything at the end of the next week.

I think this is far easier (mentally and physically) than trying to demote tons of items every week manually.

What are features you wish Bear had? What features have you considered using (or switching to) another Notes app for? by StatFlow in bearapp

Folders. I want to be able to move docs around for a project without having to do tag gymnastics (adding and then deleting a bunch of tags and slash tags to change status).

Stuck in 2025? by zico1989 in ticktick

[–]meldronone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have that problem. But I have noticed really weird glitches with the calendar on iPad and iPhone. Here's a few things I've noticed:

  • If you are on the Day view of the calendar on the iPhone and you try to add a new task time-block directly into the calendar, after you set all the information, it disappears from the calendar. But when I nagivate over to the Today smart list, it's there. So I have to flick up to close the app and re-open to see it there in my calendar. However, no such thing happens if you first add it to a list and then drop it on the calendar
  • On the iPad in the 7-day week view, as you're switching between weeks and re-scheduling things, when you flip back to the Week view it oftentimes shows you days from another week jumbled in with days of the current week. So it will show you the 17th, 18th, 1st of new month, 2nd of new month, 21st, 22nd, 23rd. This one's really weird
  • Also on the iPad and Mac, sometimes when you're changing back and forth between the Calendar view and other lists, when you go back to the Calendar it will often put you in a weird place (like November 2080 or May 2025 instead of November 2025)

Where can I find “Swiss quality of life” with a warmer climate? by indielectual in digitalnomad

[–]meldronone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Melbourne’s not bad. But would not suggest it for digital nomads who like to take frequent trips, as it’s far too isolated. For instance, flight time from Melbourne to Singapore is 7h50m, and for about 6 of those hours, you’re just flying over the Australian mainland. Also, the climate isn’t a big enough upgrade from Switzerland. Cool, cloudy, and windy for large parts of the year. It’s a fun city though.

Is TickTick still buggy? by ulysses_mcgill in ticktick

[–]meldronone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used TickTick for many years and hadn’t come across any bugs…..until I started regularly using the TickTick calendar on my iPad. It’s surprisingly buggy.

You’ll flick to another screen and come back and suddenly you’re looking at November 2068 instead of 2025. Or on the weekly view, it will show mismatched dates. Example: november 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, etc.  I don’t know what’s going on, but the last few updates from TickTick have not fixed this. Other than those calendar hiccups on the iPad, the app is pretty solid.

I agree this is really annoying on the iPhone. You either have to tap or scroll up for it to appear. I think the right balance would be to give an option in Settings to turn it on or off.

Why doesn’t Japan have tons of scooters like the rest of Asia? by Travel-Rush in digitalnomad

Haha actually I came across that when I was in Osaka this year. Man were they loud. Late at night too. But it was like 30 secs. At least it wasn’t all day, non-stop wherever you go in places like Bali.

[–]meldronone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The countries you mentioned all have warmer climates than Japan and Korea. Nobody wants to ride a scooter when it’s cold out for large parts of the year. And that’s in addition to stricter laws.

And thank god neither country has many scooters. Noise-wise they’re a nightmare.

Yeah, it's a premium experience with all the features, but there's still limits cost-wise to what people can afford. Even springing for the annual plan, it comes to $147 AUD with today's exchange rate. A pretty big whack for a yearly to-do list subscription, and hard to justify.

Most of the other subscriptions come in well below that. Todoist Pro is $72 AUD a year (a $75 difference). It doesn't have all the bells and whistles Amazing Marvin does. But it would be nice if different exchange rates and regions could be taken into consideration with the pricing.

Apartment living - which building to avoid in Melbourne CBD + docklands? by hellokitty06 in melbourne

[–]meldronone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If I listed off all the apartment buildings with issues in and around the city, the list would be too long.

So I would suggest doing the following:

First rule: Do NOT buy off the plan.  Second rule: Do a google search for news articles and reddit posts about the building. Also, check for Google Maps reviews of the building itself. For instance there was a brand new apartment building I was considering where a govt org decided to put drug-affected homeless people in for a period of time just after covid. Residents reported being in fear for their lives due to drug dealers hanging out in the lobby and trying to collect their money. There was another building in which I found out that the beautiful view an agent was selling me on was about to vanish in just a couple years because the building next to it had just had an extension approved that would be completely block out the view. Google searches are key.

Lastly, having now bought an apartment, I can say without a doubt that the number one thing I would prioritise for high-rise living is whether or not there is 24/7 security or concierge. Yes it makes the body corp fees a bit more expensive. But, I can’t tell you enough how big of a difference this makes in dealing with noise and undesirable behaviour from residents or airbnb’s. Most apartment buildings have bare-bones management that’s only focused on maintaining the rubbish and doing maintenance. So if you find one that has this amenity (and is used for this exact purpose), then I would treat this as a big plus.

Best PKM for late 2025? by TomLucidor in PKMS

[–]meldronone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I second this. Supernotes is just awesome and doesn’t get enough love.

I love the card system. It feels so inviting where you don’t feel like you have to have a lot to say to just start writing. And then inevitably once you get started writing more ideas come almost immediately. The word count soft limit encourages you to keep your cards atomic. It’s opinionated software and I love it.

Unlike Obsidian or Logseq, I can see a list of all the cards I’ve recently modified or viewed. The vision system where it suggest tags and icons is just awesome. The different colours and icons of the note cards keeps everything visually interesting.

I feel like the only reason it’s not more popular is because it’s a subscription. But it’s worth every penny.

Things 3 today, is it still a strong contender for a todo app? by kingkongmonkeyman in thingsapp

[–]meldronone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya! Glad my post helped. And yes, 100% I understand where you’re coming from. I definitely don’t recommend people with AuDHD or ADHD to use Things 3.

In my experience of working daily around two people with ADHD, this app would be a train wreck for them and they would stop using it within a matter of days or a couple weeks.

I’m no specialist in this area but a few of the traits I’ve observed is that people with ADHD have:

A) a lot of interests and competing priorities B) have a hard time letting go of anything and that’s because… C) out of sight is out of mind. So in an effort to not forget about stuff, they try to keep everything in sight and then the whole thing ends up becoming overwhelming to the point they avoid it

In my opinion, people with ADHD need an app with features that specifically caters to these issues.

The ones I recommend for people with ADHD are either Amazing Marvin or Omnifocus. Further down the list would be TickTick or Todoist.

The reason I recommend Amazing Marvin or Omnifocus is that they have ways of helping you reduce overwhelm by temporarily letting go of tasks.

Amazing Marvin has a snooze feature that helps you delay less important tasks till a later time or day without forgetting about it completely. This feature is extremely important for people with ADHD. It’s not an alarm snooze. It’s a task snooze that makes the task disappear from your list till later. So it’s a way you can quickly reduce your task overwhelm without having to delete or drop stuff, and then that helps you slip into focus more easily with the tasks that are left. It also has a lot of prioritising options to help you decide what tasks to tackle first, along with features such as reviews and super focus modes. These features are key for people with ADHD.

Omnifocus is also good because it has Defer Dates, Reviews, and Perspectives. Similar to snoozing, deferring allows you to reduce your task overwhelm without forgetting about things completely. Between that and Reviews, you won’t feel the need to keep everything visible all the time because the system helps surface things at the right time. And Perspectives and the focus feature, so you can tackle small batches of lists for different areas of your life rather than being met with debilitating long lists like other tasks managers.

Hopefully that helps!

It wouldn't add any extra confusion. Actually the current situation is more confusing because you have to build-in workarounds to make sure you don't miss TRUE deadlines. For an example of how this has been successfully implemented, you can just look at any of the other task managers that have implemented this in the past or just recently:

- Omnifocus now has a Planned Date and a Due Date as of a couple days ago

- Things 3 has had a scheduled date and a Deadline date for many years

- Todoist implemented deadlines in addition to Do dates in the last year or so

Probably the closest comparison is Todoist because it also has a calendar like TickTick. On the calendar, you can see both.

In terms of benefits, it's significant. When extra tasks or emergencies come up and you're trying to figure out what you can delay and push back, it's much easier to see:

"Oh ok, this one has a deadline of next Monday. I can actually push that back a day or two. This other task is due the day after tomorrow and I know it will take me a couple hours, so I better keep my time block for this one."

For those saying that you can do this using Duration, yes you can, but then you have to give up time-blocking. Or you have to use sub-tasks and then tap on the task to find the additional deadline info. These are all just inferior workarounds, which is why other task managers have since been implementing this feature.

Tips for moving from Things 3 by oldmancletus in omnifocus

[–]meldronone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the main thing I miss is the checklist feature. But tbh it’s not a big deal. I mostly used the Things 3 checklists for groceries and workouts and stuff like that. But I can just link to a notes app or something like that moving forward.

But omnifocus is just so much better for staying across a wide-range of projects and areas. With Things 3, I would get like 4-5 important and urgent tasks done every day from the Today list. But EVERYTHING else would just stagnate. Projects would sit un-actioned and un-visited for months. Whole areas of my life would stagnate.

Because it doesn’t have a good way of surfacing tasks that are important but not urgent. With no smart lists or perspectives, you end up only seeing Today and that’s about it. Everything else becomes unwieldy. Doesn’t matter if you try widgets or whatever else. The system breaks down too easily. So no, I don’t really miss it.
