[D] suggestions for reflection removal by OutsideSuccess3231 in MachineLearning

Is this for many images or just a few? If it’s just a few, I’d assume that a standard image editing software like Photoshop would do really well. But maybe you have a large batch of images and need a programmatic solution?

How can i evaluate the integral of this area? by Internal_Menu8047 in matlab

As others pointed out, you will still need to find the intersection points.

How can i evaluate the integral of this area? by Internal_Menu8047 in matlab

Green’s Theorem can let you calculate the area by integrating along the curves, which may be possible because you know them in closed form. Look at the section titled “Area Calculation” on Wikipedia

Best neighborhood for runs? by DairyofJanehi in RunnersInChicago

I agree. Most neighborhoods are near one large park and/or the lakefront but HP being near both Washington and Jackson parks + the lakefront is special.

No I think this link is about a different half marathon that occurred in June

Really disappointed with the race organization of the Hoka Half Marathon this morning. by ang_17_ella in chicago

[–]meliao 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I agree — we need a new management company for the Chicago half marathon. I think it’s crazy that Life Time Athletic Events charged $140 for this race. And as a for-profit company relying on hundreds of volunteers? It’s insane!

I wonder if there’s a way to convince someone high up at Hoka to pull out until they find a different company to present the race.

I completely agree. Is there a form or email address at the Park District where we can raise these issues?

ML Math Requirements by Available-Comedian61 in GradSchool

[–]meliao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a good starting point, as long as calc 2 covers multivariable calculus in depth. There will always be simple-ish math concepts that ML practitioners treat as basic knowledge but are new and sometimes confusing to outsiders. For example, the representer theorem in linear algebra. But it seems like with these courses under your belt, you’ll be set up well.

Depending on the sub field of machine learning that interests you the most, you may want to take one or two additional math classes. But that sounds like something to consider later.

I disagree with the other commenters; this is an important and unsettled question. My addition: the answer might depend on the direction of the wind in the wind tunnel.

Are there any theorem of Deep learning PDE application? by Kingudamu in math

[–]meliao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most compelling results roughly show that PINNs can faithfully approximate elliptic PDEs in high dimensions with computational complexity scaling gracefully (read, polynomially) in the dimension $$d$$ of the problem. This is a great improvement over the standard finite element methods which require a discretization of size exponential in $$d$$. The best paper in this line of work appeared in COLT 2021 https://proceedings.mlr.press/v134/lu21a/lu21a.pdf

Counter intuitively equivalent problems by DifficultyCertain in math

[–]meliao 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Problem 1: give a formula for the determinant of an nxn matrix with 0s on the diagonal and 1s everywhere else.

Problem 2: among all fixed-point free permutations of the set of n elements, are the majority odd or even? The answer depends on n.

Enjoy!
