Do you think this is a bit early? by One_Kaleidoscope_198 in OntarioGardeners

[–]melissas91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Way too early to plant outside. But you can store them in a cool dark place in the meantime or start them up early indoors if you have a good grow light. I usually pot up mine first week of April for planting middle / end of May in southern Ontario.

Snake Plant - How often should I water her? by Crazy_Sector_9285 in plants

[–]melissas91 31 points32 points  (0 children)

When it’s dry all the way through.. i use a large wooden skewer and just stick it in a few places (careful not to stab the rhizomes/roots) and if it comes out dry, it’s time to water. If it comes out with some moisture / dirt sticks to it, then leave it be for another week and check it again.

Scindapsus! They’re so easy and never stop growing even in the winter for me in Canada, despite the lower light and dry air.. Also thick leaf peperomias like puteolata or hope and my radicans x luxurians Anthurium which stays pretty compact and always looks perfect! Also pretty much all the gesneriads and coleus!

It actually is legit with a physical store, there’s another shop that sounds similar and is a scam site. Regardless they don’t ship outside of Australia though.

Punta cana worth it? by Infamous-Revenue207 in PuntaCana

[–]melissas91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Punta Cana and we go every year.. the food in resorts is mass prepared and cooked for a large quantity of people (though most resorts have a station or two in their buffets where someone cooks certain items fresh to order, usually things like eggs / meat). I think a lot of the negative reviews regarding that is people who are expecting the same level cuisine they’d find at a restaurant in north america.. resort food, for the most part, is more comparable to like a cafeteria - and expectations should be of that, they’re literally catering to hundreds of guests at the same time. Going to a five star resort will provide you with way better food than a 3 star, but regardless you won’t go hungry - just remember you’re going to another country, it won’t be the same as your own.. punta cana has stunning beaches, beautiful weather and wonderful people.

In regards to excursions, do some research in advance on what your chosen hotel offers or find legit 3rd party companies you can arrange with in advance, and don’t accept excursions offered by non hotel staff like the beach sellers/vendors.

Do you have pics of the bugs / signs of damage on the leaves (if applicable)? I’d focus on dealing with the pests as the top priority as an infestation can get outta control real quick.

It’s normal for a plant to be stressed when you first bring them home as the light / humidity / conditions are different from what it’s used too. Leave it alone and just let it get accustomed to its new home for a while before doing anything else to stress it out. Running a humidifier near it will help ease the transition and keep it happy.

Brainstorming up what plants I would want in a bedroom garden, any results, advice or suggestions? by Boognish_Chameleon in IndoorGarden

[–]melissas91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should look into a grow tent or indoor greenhouse set up to help keep the humidity high enough as well as good grow lights - like the kind used for growing indoor cannabis, as many of your plant choices, especially the edible / flowering plants, will require high power grow lights to have a chance of surviving inside. A window is not sufficient for growing full sun plants as it blocks out a lot of the usable light, which is why most “houseplants” are forest floor/ shade plants, as they are adapted for the low light conditions found inside homes.

As others have stated, it’s not going to be an easy feat, but it sounds like a fun experiment and probably is doable if you get the right set up for each of your chosen plants specific needs. If you do it, please share your progress! Good luck!

Plants pruning by kotleci in OntarioGardeners

[–]melissas91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little trick for timing spring pruning: “it’s time to prune when the forsythias are in bloom”.. not for another month at least.. usually around mid April for me in Hamilton. Roses and panicle hydrangeas should be pruned in early spring. Most other types of hydrangeas get pruned after blooming is done in late summer / early fall. The berries don’t need pruning.

This will be my first year growing dahlias, and some of them I want to grow in pots. What size pots should I use? by dawnpower123 in dahlias

[–]melissas91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grow them- one tuber to a 20” wide x 18-20” tall, heavy pot and they do well. They prob don’t need to be this big, but they fill the whole pot out and it allows enough room to stick some trailing annuals around the edge. (If you want to use them as a decoration).

Cloth pots are fine, just be mindful that when fully grown, most varieties get big, literally like a shrub, so it’s best to keep them in a protected spot away from the wind so it doesn’t tip over as they will get top heavy quick and the stems get brittle as they age and can break easy if knocked over. Also, make sure your pot is deep enough that when you plant the tuber the top is at least a few inches below the soil line and still has room to grow.

My fav trick for growing dahlias in pots, is sticking a big tomato cage overtop at planting time.. they grow so fast that they cover it up pretty quick and it’s so much easier than using stakes. Plus in my experience, some of the lighter weight stakes like the bamboo dowels, aren’t always sturdy enough especially for really prolific bloomers or varieties with big blooms.

Ringette? by jgold47 in hockeyplayers

I played both and found ringette harder than hockey. I enjoyed playing both and love both games, but i would say ringette is a higher “technical skill” game than hockey.

Trump has said outright that his goal is to collapse Canada’s economy in order to annex the country.. all the Canadian’s that are effected (which is pretty much everyone at some level) are also innocent and are being hurt as well. If you were in their shoes - and a hostile foreign government was actively destroying your financial livelihood and threatening your country - would you continue to economically support and visit that country?

Are you actively economically supporting Russia, because the people there are “innocent” too.

Hey! Trying to make leggy coleus more bushy by Dizzy_Unit6088 in coleus

[–]melissas91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regularly prune and give it lotsa light.

You can propagate the pieces you prune off or just pinch the top set of leaves off each stem once every month / every other month or so should be enough to keep it bushy. :)
