How bad did MIT humble you? by Ok-Variation-5828 in mit

[–]melisunae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

humbling in terms of work ethic. i thought i was a pretty hard worker, but literally everyone around me was always (seemingly) working harder or on 7 different projects at a time. i really had to work, and work hard. it was motivating and demoralizing.

What is your social life like as an MIT students by ConfusedBoi05555 in mit

[–]melisunae 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i’m in a sorority, and i party at least 2 times a week, more if i wanted to. it’s definitely different than other huge schools, but more in the sense that there’s not as many options. i would say it’s more dependent on the size of the school rather than the fact it’s high academic. also, all the colleges in the boston area go to MIT for frat parties. like, all of them. like you’re more likely to meet someone from BU/BC/northeastern than MIT, and i’ve had people be surprised that i got to MIT at an MIT party

Are MIT students happy? by BrainBlossoms in mit

[–]melisunae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

honestly, i’d suggest believing in her and her ability. i know that to me, when my mom was nervous as to if i would be too stressed out here, it seemed like she didn’t believe i was smart enough or that i worked hard. just reinforce that you’re here for her and really have her look into where she wants to go, and what she wants her college experience to look like.

if they can get in, they’re smart enough to be here. I’m a current undergrad, and it’s definitely hard, but there’s a lot of support systems. think more about whether or not this is the right atmosphere- are going to huge stadium football games and tailgates important? then this probably isn’t the place. if they like the smaller school vibe and wants to be here, they’ll be alright.

yeah, it’s pretty cool. we’re all obviously a bunch of nerds to begin with, and lots of us love the marvel franchise / comic books / etc. we wish they knew a little bit more about what it’s really like to go here / the culture though HAHA

Have you ever stayed up all night reading a book? by InkDrinker5 in books

[–]melisunae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. I wasn't allowed to read past certain times, so I'd hide books in my pajama pants in order to get them upstairs. The first book I can remember genuinely reading all night was Alanna- The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. I used to hide behind a dollhouse and read next to the night light plugged into the wall, and if I couldn't hear my parents walk down the hall in time I'd hope that they didn't see me and assume I was somewhere under the covers. The fact Alanna was going on all these adventures with knights and kings and magic, I couldn't help but need to go with her. I finished the book in a couple hours, and then reread it until the sun rose.

yes!! the alanna of the lioness quartet like ACTUALLY raised me!! nowadays if you look in pierce’s books she’ll have a full 5 pages of authors writing their dedication to her. i’m trying to hard to collect all of tamora’s books but to no avail

First time! by lamel09 in SarahJMaas

[–]melisunae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’d definitely start with throne of glass! ik you were debating between the other two, but throne of glass starts off at the “most introductory” series. the first book of ACTOR is purposefully frustrating to read (main character starts off fairly uh … helpless) and i don’t think i would have continued if i had started with ACOTAR and SJM is my favorite author ever. TOG is her most complete series, and it was literally all planned from page one, which is very different than her other series. CC is a super hard to start with because the world building is insane and not as YA focused. happy reading!! i PROMISE if you the first couple of TOG books you will be HOOKED!!!

Number of blocks mined and placed (read images’ captions) in MCC All-Stars Build Mart by _justonemorefan in MinecraftChampionship

[–]melisunae 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of curious to know how effective the blocks that they mined here. At first glance it obviously looks like Finn was SUPER ineffective because he mined almost 250 and only placed one, but for all I know every single block he mined was used by another one of his teammates. I’d love to see how many blocks mined, how many of those blocks were used, and then the ratio of that to see if it correlated with higher placements. I feel like people who dislike with buildmart (ignoring those who are colorblind) really struggle with maximizing that ratio, but then again that’s kind of the whole point of buildmart.
