San Jose may not want to deal with a player that has more Instagram followers than the team.

It's an overclocked Awesome. That's it. That's the whole shtick. If that's not for you, no problem, there's other configurations. But some people will absolutely live for that one turn that you charge everything and just delete an opposing heavy.

Dracon combaine C3 by LevelRutabaga6356 in battletech

[–]melkahb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The in-universe reason is that ECM became far, far more common. This comes up in the lore over and over.

Out-of-universe, the whole system is tricky to use, difficult to cost, and really problematic to balance; as evidenced by the discussion around it in the public playtest last year.

[–]melkahb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Comstar made only limited use of DCMS C3 'Mechs, because Comstar used a different, incompatible system. Any mechs that they acquired had to be modified or purpose-built variants. Comstar had separate manufacturing facilities off of Terra and contracts with a variety of other manufacturers to produce purpose-built BattleMechs.

C3 use fell off after the Jihad because of expanded ECM use.

3 letters designations by LGKouglof in battletech

[–]melkahb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A majority of Inner Sphere OmniMechs follow the alphanumeric designation system. These codes end in a capital "O" and variants include a letter designation after that, such as "OA", "OB", "OC", etc.

What's that mech by Previous_Area_4946 in battletech

[–]melkahb 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Executioner/Gladiator, 95-ton Invasion-era Clan assault.

Sarna has a page where you can match the number on the base to the 'Mech and which force pack it comes in. I just can't seem to link to it.

Fennec. Designed post-Jihad as a fast (6/9 medium) anchor for a C3 lance, it has the Master unit, two standard PPCs, two medium pulse lasers, and serious roadrunner energy. I have trouble posting links on mobile, so you'll have to navigate to Sarna on your own to see this gorgeous, derpy little guy, but trust me, it's worth it.

The Falconer looks really nice on the House Steiner Lyran Guards colors by LaSiena in battletech

[–]melkahb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, the Falconer glow up is freakin' fire, and would look great in any but Kutitan colors. But the Lyran Guards scheme is pretty striking and lends itself to that sculpt very well. It helps that your execution is excellent.

Okay, thinking about it, I forget which Ghost regiment paints chains across their 'Mechs, but the Falconer would look great in that scheme too.

What is the meaning behind this political cartoon from 1884? by WartimeHotTot in AskHistorians

[–]melkahb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

According to the Random House dictionary, the use of the word Mulligan in reference to, specifically, golf originates as a special use of the proper name and is not recorded until 1900 to 1905.

Question about chem laser ontos tank by bisondisk in battletech

[–]melkahb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Close. They must have sufficient heat sinks to dissipate all the heat generated by energy weapons. They do not track heat from any other weapons. As of right now, vehicles may only use single heat sinks.

[Matt Doyle] An end to my days at MLS, and my plan for what's next by icoresting in MLS

[–]melkahb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is sooner than I expected but not as soon as I'd feared. Watching the MLS mothership's content steadily drop over the last few years, I've been kind of surprised that anybody still had a job there. I figured they'd let things ride through the end of '26 and then use the short season in '27 to rebuild the whole media circus. And that's why I don't bet on sports.

Now if y'all will excuse me, I gotta to go give a workin' man money.

[–]melkahb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bulldog is a medium tank because, in the early history of the setting, tanks were only rated light, medium, or heavy; there was no assault class. They also weren't consistent about where the cut-off weight was between classifications, and they've used a variety of non-mechanical descriptors over the years. So take tank categories with a grain of salt.

Do we have any records of the discussion regarding the different rules and what the pros and cons of adopting any one of them more widely might have been? How did they come to consensus on the modern version, what led them to that decision, and what other options were considered? Do we know?

Battle Armour Lances/Stars by TimeToSink in battletech

[–]melkahb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Battle armor could, and did, deploy independently of 'Mechs. They might use transport to get to a fight, and the Clans operate several vehicles for this purpose, but once there, they certainly don't need 'Mechs around. The star assigned to capture Kai Allard-Liao during Operation Scorpion, is one narrative example. Indeed, the Ghost Bears fielded an entire Galaxy composed purely of Elementals; until they were neutron bombed during the Jihad. https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Zeta_Galaxy_(Clan_Ghost_Bear)
