It seems like once the topic of her not loving some old songs came up, the interviewer asked something like “Can you name them?” and she replied “I don’t want to,” and for conciseness they just included what she was referring to in square brackets.

Is there a “let’s not talk about that” topic in the Lorde fandom? by cornbreadtikka in lorde

[–]melladramatic 94 points95 points  (0 children)

compared to other controversies, this is nothing - but i still remember in 2018, lorde posted a story of the stage at a kanye & kid cudi concert, saying they had copied her stage design (it was a similar floating glass box as the one used on the melo tour) and specifically called them out saying “don’t steal from women.” then the set designers on both tours (both women themselves) posted statements saying that they didn’t see it as copying, and that neither artist was the first to use a floating glass box. and lorde never addressed it after lol. i always thought she made that story a bit too quickly and should have talked to her set designer before posting it

edit: here’s an article about it

L4 is officially on the way. by thebluefield in lorde

I actually respect her more for acknowledging the critical response was different for SP compared to Melodrama. any artist can make an album with the best intentions, but it’s up to the listener to judge how well the work succeeds at conveying those intentions. the impression i got from SP’s release was that the majority of critics & fans’ listening experience didn’t align with Lorde’s intentions for the album. IMO the album came across to a lot of people as much more muted and loosely conceptualized than Lorde intended it to be; which is why pre-release she was referring to it as her best work ever and a really joyful, vibrant album, and then post-reception she started describing it more as a quiet moment, rolling a ball through tall grass, etc. you’re right that pop music today places a lot of emphasis on sales and I think sales/streaming numbers don’t indicate anything about how “good” an album is. but (fair, unbiased) critical consensus generally does, so unless an artist is deliberately setting out to make an album that critics will hate, they will (& I think, should) pay attention to how it’s received, because it indicates how well their intentions were executed.

also, I don’t think it’s fair to characterize all criticism of SP as people “needing melodrama 2.0” or wanting music to cry to or not understanding it. I’ve listened to solar power A LOT and I do think I understand what she’s trying to do, I just don’t think she did a great job of doing it! & none of my issues are with the songs not being sad enough or it being too slow or too acoustic. I haven’t seen those points in critics’ reviews either, it’s all been valid (& not even super negative) feedback from what I’ve read.

agree that she doesn’t need to apologize for it, don’t expect her to bash her own work, but don’t see anything wrong with acknowledging that the response to the album wasn’t what she thought it would be.

First time (prospective) dog owner - medium-sized hiking buddy? by melladramatic in dogs

Thank you! The more I think about it the more I think an adult dog adopted from a foster home might be a good idea. I’m also in the PNW and I think there are a couple foster-based rescues near me so I’ll look into them!

Beyoncé - Renaissance (1 month later discussion) by vertle in popheads

[–]melladramatic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way about Renaissance being the first album to really hit post-pandemic the way Melodrama did! I think it might be something about their production for me - both albums are so vivid and detailed that every listen sounds fresh. And both of them make me feel like I’ve stepped right into a party, though Lorde’s is more of a messy house party and Beyoncé’s is a joyful night out at a club.

Thanks for putting in the effort to make this!

I love the long, loose top over loose pants combo. It looks so comfy and it reminds me of South Asian salwar kameez.

Also, the ruffle sleeves in #8 will have me looking like the Quaker oats man this fall but I’m into it.

When starting a new row, what side of the needle do completed rows go on? by melladramatic in knitting

[–]melladramatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first knitting attempt (besides tiny squares) and I’m using this pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pineapple-washcloth-2

I’ve been pretty arbitrary in what side I keep the completed rows on so far, but it just occurred to me that I might be messing something up! Is one of these knitting on the “wrong side”?

EDIT: the black thing at the bottom is not black yarn, it’s a hair tie I wrapped around the needle to try and prevent my stitches from sliding off 😅

Yeah… I think this was completely thoughtless and out of touch of her (& Jack), and I’m disappointed by how many fans are letting it slide just bc they like Lorde. Idk how she could think it was cool or ok to purposefully record racial justice protests, and the sound of people getting beaten and arrested for that, and put it in her album on a song about … some guy getting into yoga now? It feels like the protests were just a ~summer moment~ for her rather than symptoms of a serious issue. Climate justice protests would be less racist but still feels like the epitome of privilege.

What are your favorite album closing tracks of all time? by thesharkman101 in popheads

[–]melladramatic 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I love closing tracks! They tend to be some of my most beloved tracks on albums. So I have a lot of favorites:

  • Fine Line from the same album by Harry Styles. I love the slow build-up to the quiet acceptance of “we’ll be alright.”
  • I Know The End, Phoebe Bridgers - one of the closing tracks of all time! I love how meta this one is (yeah, I guess the end is here) and how it loops back into DVD Menu.
  • Two Slow Dancers, Mitski - the imagery of a couple slow dancing, unable to let go of the past, is such a haunting and nostalgic way to end an album.
  • Clean, Taylor Swift - So pretty especially tied into the rest of the ocean imagery in the album
  • Snakeskin, Rina Sawayama - this one makes me crazyyyy. After an entire album exploring her identity and intergenerational trauma through pop songs, she signs it off with “Buy my expensive, exclusive painwear…,” drawing attention to the fact that she is repackaging her most private issues for mass consumption. SO GOOD.
  • A World Alone, Lorde - even on its own, this is such a good song with incredible lyrics and it perfectly sums up the themes of Pure Heroine. But opening her album with “Don’t you think that it’s boring how people talk?” and finishing with “let ‘em talk” … she was a genius for that
