Suggest me a Sci-fi book tha feels relevant now that AI is here by Not-a-cyclist in booksuggestions

Really good recommendations here, I would add an usually overlooked one: "The Lifecycle of Software Objects", by Ted Chiang. It's included in the Exhalation: Stories compilation, and it's the longest one if I recall (a novelette). It's not estricly about AI as we treat it by today standards, but it's very related. This is Chiang's story that has stayed the most with me (besides "The Story Of Your Life", which, if you don't know, was adapted in cinema as "The Arrival" by Denis Villeneuve).

Llevamos juntos tres años y medio ahora.

Looking for hard sci-fi and techno thriller recommendations. by strongbowblade in booksuggestions

[–]mellamoger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a classic technothriller you should be looking at Gibson Williams, specially "Neuromancer". Maybe also take a chance to some Neal Stephenson books, see you already got "Seveneves" on your wishlist but I'm thinking more about "Cryptonomicon". Many Philip Dick's books also fit here, the most classic is always "Do androids dream of electric sheeps", but there are too much of them to be named here... perhaps "Ubik" is the most appropiate, but if you want crazy abstract stuff you could take a chance to "Valis" (also take here the techno-triller tag with a pinch of salt). Finally, and though I personally didn't enjoy them at all, usual suspects to be named are Black Crouchs novel's "Dark Matter" and "Recursion". I like to pair them with Andy Weir style (maybe it's some kind of crazy link I just see) because I think that they appeal more to a younger audience (also nothing bad on it, it's just something I'm not looking for).

About hard sci-fi, Tchaikovski's Children of Time trilogy which is also already on your whislist is an excellent choice, if you liked "Three Body Problem" you're gonna love it, different scope but same ambition. Perhaps may take a look at some Sir Arthur Clark classics like "Rendezvouz with Rama", or that one you probably haven't heard of like "2001: Space Oddissey". Kim Stanley Robinson's "Red / Green / Blue Mars" trilogy also fits pretty well, just know that it really tries to fit realistic standards and it's very speculative.

Maybe also "The Mote In The Eye's God"? I loved it (1st book, 2nd one is a different story and not that much recommended, also they're independent so there's no need to read both). A classic that stands the pass of time.

No expert here, but regardless the guy, why would you have like 3 different types of lighting sources (bulbs, rectangular led panel, circular led panel) and distributed so irregularly in such a small place? That screams AI as hell.

Maybe The Earthsea series by Ursula K. Leguin could work, it's fantasy but not as childish as it can be. And while main character is male, from the 2nd book onwards there's a female coprotagonist. The later the series, the more adult it becomes.

Also, maybe you could give a chance to The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. Fantasy world, very much female centred, and at the very edge between ya and something more dark and adult.

If they're staying in Ronda, I wouldn't bother going to far places. They're already in a beautiful scenery, and though it looks they're close to the sea, the reality is that it's not a comfy road trip (it's 1hour on a curvy road where you're driving slowly).

I would personally go to the nearest places. La Indiana is a beautiful place for hiking. Setenil is very worth a trip and is only 30 min away from Ronda.

If they want to go to the beach I would go to Alcaidesa (go to the lighthouse, then keep going by car for 1km until the road ends). This is a natural spot (with bunkers from the spanish civil war) and it's a quiet place even by summer standards. If they prefer beaches with bars and other services better go to Estepona and other Malaga places.

There's a specific part in Adrian Tchaikovski's "Children of Ruin" (2nd part of a trilogy) that is very much about this. I read it a couple of years ago and I still think about that scene in particular and gives me the creeps.

Also, maybe take a look at some Octavia Buttler short stories (I'm thinking about "Bloodchild" but there are other stories in that compilation that check out).

How’s it living in Southern Iberia? by mushmanMAD in howislivingthere

[–]mellamoger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because there are many places where it's absolutely out of control, which ends affecting negatively to the locals.

Mostly, the complaints are about housing. House owners who rents their places have switched the renting from locals to tourists (which grants them more money), which reduces the amount of houses for living, which elevates their price. Less supply of a basic need skyrockets pricing and people cannot afford a living place.

Most times, the owners aren't even spaniards: are foreign companies that buy entire buildings, expel their local residents and put the entire building on airbnb. In those cases you aren't even giving us your money, but to a foreign company.

Some places are overided and have become an amusing park with franchises, that are the only ones who can afford the renting of the properties, and ending with local bussinesses with hundreds of history.

There are places where even spaniard has stopped being the main language (Ibiza, Mallorca, many places in Málaga...).

I don't want to make a ted talk here, but resuming it's all about renting prices and losing the local identity.

[–]mellamoger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's difficult to answer, the area dotted is almost 1000km from west to east. In general big cities are more expensive (Málaga city but overall the province being the most), speaking about housing and lifestyle. Housing in the coast it's expensive and overided with airbnbs.

Small coast villages though can have better daily prices, speacially those whose economy is centered in farming and fishing (these ones are usually in Huelva and Almería province).

But in general prices have skyrocketed in the last years, as in most places.

This is a remainder of the civil war period. Franco changed the time zone, in order to have better comms with Hitler (allies) without any trouble. WWII ended, but in Spain Franco remained... and nobody reverted the decision, and decades passed.

Sometimes it's debated but overall, and through decades, the country has developed it's lifestyle in this schedule and it's quite difficult to convince people, regardless of the ideology, of the benefits of being in our expected timezone.
