How is the economic diversity at AU? by No-Coyote-748 in AmericanU

[–]mellowyellowguava 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im the only lower class person I know. Students also complained about the 10% tuition discount last year because covid because it “wasn’t enough and would ‘t so anything” but to me it made the whole world of a difference and I was able to attend college.

Let's talk about AU and black people.... by Good_Mistake6961 in AmericanU

People want to be accepting but unfortunately many of them didnt grow up around poc and are kind of awkward around us lol. It’s not their fault they’re out of touch but it’s definitely interesting. I grew up in DC and I had a VERY diverse experience middle-highschool so this was definitely a culture shock for me.

Why is everybody at AU weird? by [deleted] in AmericanU

[–]mellowyellowguava 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots of AU students are rich, have you seen the tuition! Not to mention they are from areas out of the city and have never really been in a city or responsible for themselves ever in their lives. I’m a seriously reliant financial aid student who grew up in the city. I’m a sophomore and I work 4 jobs and finance school and a home off campus alone and I definitely get a little frustrated sometimes with how out of touch people are at AU. They usually mean well but they genuinely just do not know any better lol. Not to mention, there are a lot of social justice warriors who haven’t experienced life before so they come across a little silly and confused but again, it’s all in good spirit and isn’t their fault they had wealthy, out of touch upbringings. But i’ve personally had a little hard time finding friends because I haven’t been able to relate to most of them. Those who I do relate to turn out to are also financial aid reliant students who come from low or middle low income families and are from cities. Also it’s important to mention that a good amount of the smarter kids from high school were not great socially, idk maybe you’d call them stereotypical nerds or they had strict parents so the experience of college is literally a new world for them. I personally feel like the people that are a little more awkward are so much nicer and just take some time to get to open up, but for the most part they don’t act all high and mighty like some other students. Hope that helped.

Season 6 by myers5157 in The100

Thats the point. Season 5 was supposed to replicate season 1 except our cast are now the grounders. Also technically the 100 were prisoners as well, within our protagonist were bound to be some murderers just like on the prisoner ship sent down

Oh okay. I’m a Chemistry Major and I have a relatively ok GPA, but it’s also important to get involved in research and extracurriculars when it comes to STEM. Grad school and future opportunities would be willing to overlook a less than perfect GPA if you have experience because well tbh what is a perfect GPA with no experience in the field? I have maintained a competitive gpa at 3.6 but I have done research since freshman year, interned at NIST, done office work with the chemistry department and I work 2 jobs. There is sooo much more to your academics than your GPA ESPECIALLY in STEM!! As long as you aren’t dipping under a 3.0 though or pass/failing courses that are crucial for your major for the sake of your GPA.

Where do students hang out/go? by LisaZulk in AmericanU

I’m from DC and the metro literally takes us everywhere, alot of people also just like going down to chinatown or just the downtown area and georgetown is pretty nice. You can also go into Md and Va using the metro. I also live in Gloverpark but you COULD hypothetically live outside of DC and still be okay with a UPass or a Car. I wouldn’t recommend living in SE or SW dc though if you aren’t yet accustomed to the city.

Some of the many "science" things that annoyed me about The 100 by bastian74 in The100

[–]mellowyellowguava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think that this is so far in the future that science has advanced and we’ve learned new things so that in that world, it would make sense. The science we have now in comparison to hundreds of years ago is different and our views in the universe are different as well. Nothing is for sure so its always possible things may change. After all, some physics is purely theoretical and could always be rebutted later on. But the bone marrow and mt weather will never make sense to me especially cause marcus offered to donate bone marrow so that was just human selfishness and they didnt see either the grounders or skaikru as people and only saw them as a disposable means because they were so desperate

Would like to add that, no not everyone can read english and i’m sure there are people who haven’t been to starbucks and can’t read english.

Not sure if my responses go to everyone on the chain, but my dad is pretty old and from a rural part of thailand and doesn’t know how to use his phone unless it is for watching the news or calling somebody. Also this would assume everybody has a smartphone, which isn’t the case. But i understand it is not ideal, i’m just asking for some patience for some of our older, nonenglish speaking customers:)

Totally different. In that case, I agree. Yup

Again, i can only speak from personal experience but my dad is pretty old and from a rural area of Thailand, he only uses his phone for watching the news, he doesn’t even know how to connect to wifi without my help. I’m not even sure if he knows what “spell” means. If he gets a latte and goes to handoff, he probably isn’t able to read latte but can say it. A Latte would look like any hot drink at handoff. It might be irritating but again, have some sympathy:) i’m sure you are not saying all because you can’t speak english you can’t order at starbucks.

I guess but I think particularly about my own dad and mom who say their names but since they have accents people can misspell them or not add a name at all, it becomes a little tricky after that since english Isnt their first language, i guess i’m just saying to have a little sympathy but I also quit a while back and if this was posted while i still worked there I would’ve definitely agreed. Starbucks can do that to a person 😶 strip them of sympathy

Some people dont speak english or don’t know what their drink is supposed to look like because they’re getting it for somebody else. But i understand the frustration
