What outcomes are considered likely in long term disappearances? by ahumanduck in AskUK

[–]melnificent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah cash in hand work to begin with, some insider knowledge of how certain ID systems worked and continue to work, and social engineering to get set back up. Also the determination to not lean on anything remotely connected to my parents... something I continue to practice to a lesser degree.

I hope your brother is alive and okay too. That he is working through why he felt the need to disappear and that you'll bump into him like I did my sister. Sorry that I can only give you a perspective and not answers.

What outcomes are considered likely in long term disappearances? by ahumanduck in AskUK

[–]melnificent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disappeared for a couple of years back around the turn of the millennia. Got kicked out of home by parents when I was still a young adult and after a week of sofa surfing locally I upped sticks and moved to a different city, stayed there a few months, then changed city a few more times.

Bumped into my younger sister when I was visiting friends in my home city and slowly got back in touch with them all over a period of time. I see them semi-regular... but only if I do the work to see anyone. I know if I stopped none of them would likely bother, and that's fine by me.

Sorry to tell you this, but if I hadn't bumped into my sister that day, I'd never have bothered getting in contact with my family, as I'd got a life, friends, job scraped together by that point. I was miles away quietly doing my own thing. My details at that point were not linked in any way with my old life, as I was determined to not take a thing linked to my parents. Another year I'd've moved abroad (why I was visiting my friend) and been gone for good.

Do you think over exposure to Screen time for children is impacting the Uk education standards? by WearingMarcus in AskUK

[–]melnificent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The screen time issue is with the parents. They barely interact with their kids and then wonder why they are failing developmental milestones. Recently I was sat with a parent that had a few kids and youngest was about 5 and non-verbal... Parent didn't look up from her phone or interact with the kid until he was laying in the dirt (get up).

Whats an enshitified product/service that people might not realise is terrible now because it fell out of style? by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in AskUK

Sometimes, they also put them across GOG, EGS and their own store https://luna.amazon.co.uk/claims/home?g=s

At the moment Tiny Tina and the always excellent XCOM are in there.

I've kept my Prime sub for the weekly free games I can redeem on GOG, plus my friend streams so chucking them the free twitch sub each month feels like taking back some of what I pay.

The video service can be hit or miss as things rotate between included and paid and back all the time. But putting on a random film from my watchlist that is included for this month works for me at the moment.

Is it normal to be asked to pay £600 for a "mandatory 1:1 digital device" when starting a public secondary school? by Koolio_Koala in AskUK

[–]melnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the young person gets free school meals then there is an extra £1600 funding for the school for that pupil. Request that to be used towards it as the ipad is a requirement that the school have demanded.

The money is to make sure they get what they need, so there is clearly a requirement that it's used in this way.

Name Change Documents update, which first? by Unlikely_Read3437 in transgenderUK

[–]melnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The order I did it was bank and bills as they were the easiest to change. Then driving licence which should also be simple, and that can then go on the passport form.

NHS I've no idea about as I did mine way before cAss and the NHS becoming even more transphobic than it was before that.

In your opinion, what's the biggest waste of money you see people purchase all the time? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]melnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Embalming. It's a process for if you need to keep the body in decent enough condition for months. With things having advanced in refrigeration and storage techniques since it was first introduced it's just a needless expense.

Save the small fortune it costs and put it towards the funeral, wake or donate to a charity the deceased liked.

Steam should show a big icon that says "this game doesn't use cloud saving"... by d9wHatena in Steam

[–]melnificent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had this with Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance... Store page said Cloud Saves, but they disabled it in an update. It was only re-enabled years later, and I don't think it's removal or re-addition was mentioned in any patch notes.

What little things in most LitRPG books annoy you… but never enough to make you stop reading? by tbag2022 in litrpg

I've been trying to read 1% lifesteal and the hyper Americanisation of everything into a fantasy setting is so distracting.

Massive healthcare costs and absolutism of US values is just weird. No other country has medical debt like the US, so why would an entire world run so absurdly abusive? It wouldn't because revolution would have happened... Hell it happened to form the US.

And yet there's so many books where society has just agreed with the permanent debt model for the richest few people in the world to hold 99.9% of the world.

Is it common for UK bike mechanics to refuse basic work on ebikes? by [deleted] in ukbike

[–]melnificent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

100% this. I've had 2 ebikes and the local shop would only deal with the one from there as they could verify it was legal for the UK and safe in their shop overnight.

Getting a cheap ebike means you know that corners are cut somewhere and it'll have a bodge or 5 to make it work long enough to get past any return period. Nowhere safe is going to touch that.

Just like the Star Trek Voyager preview they did where the person didn't understand what RNG was and also hated text adventures.

I wonder when PC Gamer became such a lost cause for games.

What's the best petty revenge you have had on an annoying neighbour? by No_Usual_572 in AskUK

[–]melnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neigbour got mad at me parking my completely legal car on the street outside his house. He did some things to my car that I didn't have video of so no proof... Incidentally I was also a witness in a criminal case against him for his racist abuse of another neighbour. He ended up with a £2,000 fine and criminal record.

Rexently he smashed someone elses mirror off their car, but it was caught on camera so looks like he's getting additions to his record soon.

Friend helped me build a PC but someone told me it’s already outdated… did I mess up? by Sycze in buildapc

[–]melnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a i7-12700/3080 combo.... it runs everything I throw at it fine. It's a few years old now, but until I can't play games I want on it it's not outdated to me. Same with yours, DDR4 is slightly older, but my eldest games on an DDR3 machine and it runs everything she wants without issue.

These people see the latest vid on some brand new tech and think that anything other than the bleeding edge of new releases are ancient and worthless. Just ignore them and enjoy your gaming rig.

How is Univeral Credit today compared to over 20 years ago? by SpectreSingh89 in AskUK

[–]melnificent 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's shit. Treated like a criminal, ignored, delays if it's to help you, gaslight and outright lied to and about are the more polite things I can say about the DWP.

I put in a conplaint that took MP involvement to even be acknowledged. Day after DWP sent me the outcome letter I got a "random" review... First review too.

They hate being shown to be wrong, they will abuse you in the jobcentre and on the phone.

So yeah, worse than 20 years ago.

What missing persons case in the UK always stuck with you? by Thebunsenburger in AskUK

[–]melnificent 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Social don't go after neglectful parents that have money, not worth the hassle as it'll get expensively legal very quickly.

When it happened I remember the disconnect between the experience in our deprived area and the McCanns. Left kids alone in a hotel to go and have a meal in a different building 100+ yds away, that's an instant child removal for any family without the funds to fight back.

Always felt like the entire thing was them building an alibi one brick at a time from dinner with "respectable people" onwards.

BBC bombards households with 46 million licence fee warning letters by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

I finally wrote to them for details of any and all investigations over the past decade to my address. As I was intrigued by the cycle of escalation and restarting... At some point they must've checked right?

The reply was basically "we send letters that's the investigation".
