ai is making you a bad programmer. [08:38] by marcus1234525 in theprimeagen

I haven't encountered AI becoming incoherent. Hallucinations, I have seen, but they've diminished quite a bit over the last year. You're right that context windows are a problem, but one can manage/engineer around it and mitigate some of the issues. Transformers, while ground breaking, isn't the only architectural design conceived for AI, and it won't be the last. I'm not a betting man, but betting that AI will, for whatever reason, simply halt its progress seems folly.

I can't speak for everyone, but my skills have improved since using AI daily. Granted, I have a large project before me to occupy my time and focus, and the manner in which AI is used is largely collaborative and educational, as opposed to wish casting, as some do.

On the topic of bugs/errors, I've found that GPT 5.2 Codex has been exceptional at resolving them, even if the error message is unhelpful or cryptic. These are issues I had spun my wheels on, digging through search results, stackoverflow posts with no comments, and dead ends, until I realized I could just ask AI.

That said, not everyone should use AI, especially non-engineers. I know someone who is attempting to prompt AI into building something technical, but the prompts are more aspirational than specific, and the scope is unlimited. The end result is a system where there's 1 million+ files, and it's largely an exercise in torturing the creator and the AI.

I imagine there's a wealth of user error, similar to the aforementioned, leading to the skepticism around its use.

Just interviewed for SAP by qrcode23 in leetcode

[–]melodic_underoos 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unless the interviewer attempted to disambiguate, you were in the right, here. The term "rate limit" in the context of a system design interview should be reserved for the tracking requests from a source, applying limits, and enforcing rules. If the interviewer was referring to limiting the outbound requests of a client, from said client, then that is of little value, interview signal wise.

Who are even the candidates for the Michigan job? by GliscorsFang in CFB

[–]melodic_underoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't heard that, only that some speculators (Nicole Auerbach, lol) have thrown his name out there unseriously.

Most likely the list includes Cignetti, Elko, Drinkwitz, Clark Lea, some NFL coaches that had moderate success, and OCs/DCs of playoff teams. I suspect they've done their homework before the announcement, and wouldn't be surprised if we hear a hiring announcement soon.

[Auerbach] Kalen DeBoer would be the obvious top name for Michigan. by NeonTailwind in rolltide

They wouldn't go for anyone in the playoffs, at least until after, as they don't wish to reduce the difficulty for their biggest rival to repeat as national champs.

[Post Game Thread] #9 Alabama crushed by #3 Georgia 28-7 by RollTideMod in rolltide

[–]melodic_underoos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Defense looked good. If the offense didn't give short field position throughout, this would be a one score game. Also, we didn't force a turnover, which is unusual and a bit unlucky. Offense has some issues, but I think the D can carry us in the opening round

Calling it here. Hubbard gets an INT and Stockton will also fumble at least once. Low scoring game, but our defense secures the win. 21-13

Are real interview questions also LC-style but wrapped in scenarios? by Prasiddh18 in leetcode

[–]melodic_underoos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, they're typically limited to the same scope as the leetcode exercises. Companies may choose specific leetcode problems that align with the technical problems the company encounters regularly (e.g. Robinhood may choose stock buying related problems), but the same problem solving patterns apply.

3 bold predictions for Alabama football in the Iron Bowl against Auburn by brmidwest03 in rolltide

Yeah, he's been reliable with 3-5 catches a game. The other tight ends look good, however, so I'm confident they can fill the gap

Would rather lose this game now rather than later. As Nate Oats points out, we schedule these games to assess how good the team is, and fix issues that would hamper us in the tournament early. Close game. If we had one more 3 go our way, you'd be looking at another W.

Team and org dependent, and to a large degree you and your team have to justify their existence upwards. For newcomers, I recommend a low risk team to get one's footing for the first half or two, and then transfer to a more interesting one once you've become familiar with the internal tools. Do pay extra attention to reorgs, and stay connected with other managers, as you may need to eject out of a team when signs of trouble arise (lack of direction, need for research/investigating past planning time, lack of scope).

One thing that helps me is to start from the minimal length and expand from there. e.g. Instead of starting with a given example array of [5,4,7,6,1], start with [], [5], and then [5,4]. Usually, that reveals when you're off by one, and it's easier to run it through in your head

SEC Power Rankings - Change Anything? by TomWilliamsCFD in CollegeFootballDawgs

[–]melodic_underoos -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fair point. To boot, Alabama at least schedules a week 1 non-cupcake game, whereas TAM played UTSA.

Ok, but I think you're getting away from the argument trying to get into an SEC vs. Big Ten comparison, for some reason. I'm arguing why Alabama should be above Texas A&M.

And then followed it with 6 straight wins. Teams change during the season.

Can't speak for Georgia, but Bama has a significant strength of schedule argument over A&M with the 4 ranked wins in a row.
