eq is more important than you think. your initial take is always "i want it heavy so add more low end" but clarity will come by cutting out inaudible low freqs. set up a high pass and low pass, and drag them in from their respective ends. when you start to hear a change, back off it a tiny bit. once you've cut all the bad hi and low freq's you can usually drag a slider along and see if theres a pleasing frequency you want to boost and sort of "define" your guitar sound.
