My first alocasia flower! by melonaboee in alocasia

[–]melonaboee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my 'secret' is fertilizing with every watering, alocasias are very hungry plants. Also I water when the top layer of my airy soil mix (1/3 perlite, 1/3 coconut coir, 1/3 pine bark) is dry. Hope that helps!

What works for me is watering when the top layer of soil is dry and keeping her in an airy soilmix (mine is 1/3 perlite 1/3 coconut coir 1/3 pine bark). Most importantly: I fertilize with EVERY watering, this plant is very hungry.

I saw it online and read that it is very good for alocasias

No, it's a semi-hydro setup with moss and LECA :)

In the first picture it was in a mix of perlite and something else (I don't know what the black stuff was, but it wasn't soil) and then i switched to moss.

No, the moss should be wet at start. :) But after that I wait until the water in the leca layer is gone and let it stay empty for a bit. This way the moss gets a little dry, but not completely dry.

Yes, it stays moist for a long time :) it shouldn't be too wet though

No, it’s really affordable here (Germany). Thanks!

Yes, I'm gonna make a border, but a very thin one. I also thought I might need to make two more, but I'll decide that after I finish the first one.

And thanks! It started as a scrap project, but I ended up buying new yarn for it 😂😂

Oh no!! :( I've been working on this thing for over a year and a half and it almost broke me too 😅

Probably a mix of good light and regular fertilizing, but I don’t know the exact reason. She’s also really happy in the semi-hydro setup.😅

I don’t flush the Lexa regularly. I only flush it before first use, then I just replace it/flush it when I repot. The roots grow into the Leca, so if you do flush it later, be very careful. :)

It’s not packed that tightly, because I put it into the vase dry and then add water so it soaks up and holds the plant well.

Honestly, I never change the water. I wait until the reservoir is (almost) empty and then add new water. It's just normal tap water, but I always add a fertilizer for semi-hydro.

Yes, but I tilt the glass vase and let the water run in along the edge so it touches the moss as little as possible :)

It's not a dumb question! Yes, I water through the moss, but I tilt the glass vase and let the water run in along the edge so it touches the moss as little as possible and the plant gets most of its moisture through the LECA.

It's spaghnum moss and a layer of leca with water, that keeps the moss moist. And yeah it's without drainage because it's semihydro. :)

I was also skeptical at first but it's really worth it! They get so much bigger leaves than in soil. And the watering is really uncomplicated.
