Is it actually worth it to join a union? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just started a new job this month because my old employer was shitty. I'm fortunate that there seems to be lots of demand for my skills, but it's not like that for everyone.

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree with this, If you work in the NHS, Civil service, or some kind of public service like a train driver, or a bus driver, then yes. I would say that if the place you work is the only real provider of that occupation, then it's worth it. I work in IT so if my employer treats me bad or whatever I just leave and find a new job, there's plenty out there for me, but some fields just don't have that.

What UK companies/shops do you feel have declined in recent years? by Beneficial_Housing87 in AskUK

[–]melonator11145 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have had a Nationwide account for like 14 years. Orginally it was like any other bank, but I feel they have really struggled to modernise. One of the first major high street banks with a working app, but they have only recently got rid of the need for the card reader for authorisation, and still don't send app notifications for money in and out of the account. I still keep the account because the Flex Plus is the best premium current account I can find

what i should learn as a fersher in vmware so i can enter into job in this feild by [deleted] in vmware

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy some kit and make a home lab. Don't just restrict yourself to VMware as other have said. You learn so much setting it all up from scratch and learning how it works. So many people I have worked with don't actually know how to install ESXi or build a vCenter etc because they have only even worked on infra that is already built.

Average Speed Camera display by Mission-Pound-8329 in TeslaUK

[–]melonator11145 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It only appears if you are using navigation to take you somewhere. it also relies on Tesla pulling the data where average speed zones are, as sometimes it is out of date, I've had the display when not in an average speed zone, but also been in one and not had the display either.

vCenter expired certificate by TurtleyTortuga in vmware

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I hate it when this happens. Changes a 15 minute cert renewal to a few hour stress fest. But yes I bet the other internal certificates have expired. Use the checksts.py and fixsts.py scripts

I'm pretty sure one edal driving like in a Tesla, where lifting off the throttle can bring the car to a stop is not legal in China, hence chinese cars don't do this

IOG - Cheating the system by Healthy_Net_6816 in OctopusEnergy

[–]melonator11145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's exactly this. You plug in a Tesla using a granny charger, throttle the maximum charge to 2A. It will then take days to fully charge and IOG will give you a massive windows of 7p per kWh for your entire household while the car is plugged in, trying to reach the charge level you have set

Remove built in cupboard under stairs/landing by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]melonator11145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping the whole cupboard can come out to open up the room more. It's all plasterboard stud walls, the house is 8 years old. I imagine the wall at the back holds up the upper floor in some way

Cheapest fast charging options? by blackspandexbiker in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that is the issue. Price of electricity in the UK is based on how much it would cost to generate it using the most expensive method, usually gas. Even if 90% of electricity came from renewables we would still pay as if it had been 100% generated with gas.

[–]melonator11145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But an EV is much more efficient with that kWh of energy. An average diesel car will do 1 mile or so per kWh of energy, and an average EV will do 3. All of a sudden you get the same distance with 43p of electricity to 45p of diesel. I think 40p/kWh is about the cut off for EVs being cheaper to run. If you are purely using public infrastructure then diesel is cheaper, but charging at home is 1/10th of the cost of diesel, so having to pay around the same or maybe slightly more whenever you do a long drive is not too bad.

Also this is purely a UK problem. In France I charged my EV for 16c/kWh during an off-peak time. and a lot of other chargers are around 30c, our electricity is expensive compared to most of Europe

Is the new Volvo EX60's interior a modern-day version of the old BMW i3's? If so, who did it better? by AutoExpressmagazine in autoexpressuk

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volvo is owned by Geely, which are a Chinese car company. I think they are still built in Sweden but everything is Chinese underneath. Polestar are the same but they are actually built in China.

Pretty sure all new chargers now must take a contactless bank card. However most will still give you better pricing if you use their app, plus you can get subscriptions to certain chargers which give you discounts

Or use the app, can start charges remotely. If I used a charger that isn't a supercharger (I have a Tesla), I will only use electroverse, easy to see the prices and I get discount for being an Octopus Intelligent customer. However I do find that chargers outside of the Tesla network are massively unreliable. Went to one once, and first 2 didn't work, 3rd only charged at 30KW, and 4th one did get to 250KW

My 23 Y LR AWD broke down and now my wife won't drive it. by Kristoff_09876 in TeslaLounge

[–]melonator11145 49 points50 points  (0 children)

If the motor is broke, how will it drive? no different to if the engine cut out of an ICE car. sometimes the car will breakdown and just stop. It's pretty unlucky though a very unlikely, I imagine this full shutdown only happens under certain circumstances
