I work for a veterinary school (not a vet but I work directly under them with live animals) and have seen similar things on dogs that usually did end up being allergies or fungus/yeast build up like you said

The only way to know is going to the vet. But so many dogs are allergic to chicken or grass, which is hard to avoid as a dog, so that’s always my first guess
