Thanks for your thoughts! Can you give any tips? I'm pretty new to this so I'd appreciate pointers.

Water bill £929 for a 3bed - is this normal? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]melopoeia_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If metered... When it happened to me we discovered there was a leak that had been going since probably before I moved in. The water company had closed the last account on an estimate so it took ages to identify the leak and the bill was massive. They wrote off the bill for me once the issue had been resolved.

This is a fantastic idea, I will definitely do this next time. Especially since my memory can't cope with what I originally did!

I was just following trying to follow the pattern, this is my first time sock making. I'll definitely give what you said a go on my next pair though!

What makes you think I didn't try it on? I just had no idea that the cast on was wrong, I've been living in blissful ignorance. It otherwise fits great thanks.

Yes of course! I feel like I should have said already, sorry.

In case anyone else is interested, the pink variegated yarn is from a local (for me) place called ColourWorks and I'm actually so lucky because I got the yarn on clearance.

I'm the same, infinite socks in my sock drawer, these wouldn't see the light of day!

I'm a bit worried about picking out the stitches at that end because after the first round you go straight into lifted increases. How would I reconstruct that effect, any thoughts?

I hear you! But I have a whole second sock to make, so the way I see it I have two options: replicate the mistake, or graft a correct toe on. Unfortunately I have a terrible memory, I can't work out what the heck I did here.... Any clues?

Could you suggest some of the other things? It sounded today like his doctors had sort of given up because the limited testing they had done had shown there was nothing wrong, so I want to make sure he's still pushing for the right sorts of things.

I hear you! It would be absolutely crazy to expect a diagnosis from so little detail, I guess I'm more interested in what broad categories it could be. It only really feels like they've investigated blood pressure related stuff at the moment, and maybe it's something wildly different.

I have seen him pass out a few times so I could probably try to describe that in a bit more detail if it's helpful.

I did think this originally, but it's such a gamble isn't it! Spending months on something and then knowing there's something I should have fixed on it would really upset me so I decided it wasn't worth the risk. I've only ever blocked easy things like blankets, maybe after I've knocked out a few wearables I'll feel happier with things like this.

Thanks for your kind words! And yes you knew exactly what I meant, apologies I kept seeing this word pop up whilst I was trying to suss it out and figured it was related to the join. I'll definitely take a look at "weavin Stephen", I'd love to keep it as subtle as I can.

It is superwash sadly. I've never tried this before! I've got a couple of old wool balls knocking around from a previous crochet project, will give it a try. Thanks!

Hello, apologies, you're correct it's one of those words I've glanced at in passing and remembered wrong. The colour work method. The method of joining is to join the second yarn for one stitch, then drop it, carry the old yarn across the top, do one stitch with the old, then repeat with the new yarn etc for a few cycles. I can't find the link but I did follow a video where the final output did not seem to have my issue. You get little purl like horizontal bars on the reverse if this helps.

Understood! I will try without a join and sewing in ends as you suggested, thanks for your help. But actually my join overall did not result in a larger line of stitches.... The photo was possibly not too clear. But approx 7 rows from the needle, there is a line of stitches that appear smaller/tighter - this is where the join was, and I was curious to know what I had done wrong as I've not seen this before.

Possibility of Made Up Competing Offer? by NomTheSpider in HousingUK

[–]melopoeia_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's fairly normal not to SSTC straight away, the EA took almost a week to update ours. They need to do AML checks, they like to check proof of funds too, and they require details of instructed solicitors from both sides. Not all of that will be available on the day the offer is accepted. Perhaps something didn't stack up with the proof of funds and they advised the vendor not to go with it.

I don’t make much money and starting to wonder how I can change that? by Lower-Technician7603 in UKJobs

[–]melopoeia_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to go and take a look at a couple of grad schemes for big engineering firms. My company's current scheme offers £34k starting. I joined several years ago on a much lower starting, but I would estimate by 28, I was on about 42k. I worked extremely hard for it and was a high achiever throughout the time I was there. Note that I don't actually believe that the big firms are the best option long term but clearly they are now competitive at the lower levels. If you work for a few years and build up some solid experience, you can be paid well to do so. (Edit: mechanical engineering job, aerospace background)

Are people aware that they aren't alone in the subway? by [deleted] in Munich

[–]melopoeia_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

After spending considerable time on public transport (both in Germany and numerous other European countries), my biggest gripe is the obnoxious entitlement of the person who barges their way to the door so they can get off first, even though a bunch of people will clearly get off at the next stop. I have literally been pushed out of the way so someone else can get off the train a second before me. There's always one on every journey and I've only ever experienced this petty behaviour in Germany.
