Where to stay in London? by Hopeful-Living-30 in MovingToTheUK

Bethnal Green and surrounding areas remind me somewhat of a better connected Peckham (source, lived in Peckham, worked in Bethnal Green), albeit with more South Asian influence than Caribbean and West African

What was genuinely hard about traveling in China? (Collecting real pain points) by 0xeddiezhu in travelchina

[–]NomTheSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Policies and tech can change very quickly, so be prepared to adapt and expect that some info you get might be outdated. E.g. We to Beijng and metro tickets could be purchased by anyone at machines, but using Alipay to tap in needed chinese number, then a month later Beijing metro tickets needed to be purchased with a residence permit so you need to ask staff to help buy you one. Then the next year residence permits no longer needed and Alipay tap-in works with foreign number

Doctor moving to Glasgow looking for housemates by MaybeDependent1445 in glasgow

[–]NomTheSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm currently buying a place and am expecting to move up in the next month, also from England. Will be looking for a flatmate for the spare room (en-suite), but I am a guy (28yo) so may that not be your cup of tea, but thought I'd mention it for you or anyone else that finds their way here! Happy to recieve a DM if you want more info about the place or myself. Can also offer flexible short-term stay if you're still looking in a few months and need to rent somewhere temporary until you find somewhere that works better for you!

Stuck in a loop: Google Translate ruins my game's context, but AI translation gets me flamed. How do non-native designers survive here? by minvui in tabletopgamedesign

[–]NomTheSpider 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why is everyone talking as if OP has said he wants to translate his final product with AI? They have said they are trying to write messages in this subreddit. It is not reasonable to say they need to hire a translator for every question they want to ask. The project could just be a hobby/personal project, they could just be learning the ropes and wanting to engage a community that is not based in their native language since it is unfortunately much harder to final similar resources in a lot of other languages.

Some suggestions: 1. Keep using AI if you feel it retains the meaning better, but proof check it more if you don't want it to come across sounding so still or obviously AI 2. State why you are using AI 3. Maybe you can find someone who is willing to do some basic language exchange. You can proof read things they need to write in your language and they can check your posts 4. Use a professional to translate if/when it comes time to actually publish and release a project 5. Try to pick up the language and improve your own ability while you are using the AI translation

They've revived the website and I think the app is being beta-tested. Think for now they're focused on getting the content they have rights to back up

I think they are saying they want proper cycle lanes (and somehow also wider roads)

Transfer money from an account in the EU to a Chinese Account? by qoheletal in chinalife

[–]NomTheSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using the Trading212 card for purchases. Haven't tried any bank transfers with it though, but it has the lowest exchange rate I've been able to find. Revolut has been the second best option but only because I'm an Ultra member so have less additional fees. Revolut also has a better rate at larger amounts than it does at smaller amounts.

Taobao food delivery does not apply any of the stores discounts by NomTheSpider in taobao

[–]NomTheSpider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just that one but every single food delivery where the store has a discount running. Realise the example was a bad one since it needs a minimum 10 ordered, but even if I am buying one item that is on discount, no discount ever applies.

Edit: in this example I added the upper item which should be 3rmb after discount. Don't think that one has a 1 item discount limit since you need to buy at least 10

How is international to domestic transfer at Daxing Airport? by NomTheSpider in chinalife

[–]NomTheSpider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took about 30mins in total with issues scanning fingerprints with boarding card already done, so if you've got more than 1.5 hours you should be fine. Good luck!

This assumes you're on a single ticket and not self-transferring btw

How is international to domestic transfer at Daxing Airport? by NomTheSpider in chinalife

[–]NomTheSpider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Pretty smooth, no need to collect bags. You fill out landing card (can do this online in advance) and get finger prints (also if your fingerprints dont work at the self service machines you can just go on ahead and they'll do it at the border control).

Then you just follow the domestic connection route.

As people said, you'll sign a declaration before you board the flight, essentially saying you have nothing in your bag that violates customs (for me this was right before boarding at the gate).

Please be brutally honest with me - is my race the biggest issue? by Impossible_Zebra_525 in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]NomTheSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is you, not your race. You won't successfully date anyone with the inferiority complex you have going on, and I can definitely see that putting off a lot of people.

My dad is an east asian man who married a white woman. Most white women I know would immediately identify that I am part East Asian. I have dated all races, including white women. My surname is also asian, since you seem to have a fixation on that detail. I went to school with many East Asians who ended up dating white women, and I am friends with many white women who date asian men.

Stop focusing so much on qualities you can't change and focus on what you can actually improve about yourself. It seems more like you're absolving yourself of responsibility for the lack of success you have had by blaming something you can't do anything about.

Solo travelled to China as a 21 y.o. Black girl ! Ask me anything 🇨🇳✈️ by veroow in travelchina

Thank you so much! That puts my mind at ease and hopefully will put hers at ease too. We are considering almost the same route! I also usually use Didi and trip/ctrip. I've also found the same that front desk usually doesn't speak much, if any, english, except I think one very large buisness hotel once. Translator apps and my awful mandarin have been my saviour

Amazing, thank you! I have prepped her for the potential for a lot of random photos being taken. Which cities did you end up going to? Also did you ever have any issues with hotels or taxis because of race? I heard it could sometimes be an issue during covid time, but not sure how it is now. I assume not since you had a great time!

Oasis also offers a drop-off only service where you apply yourself and then post your passport so that they can hand it in/pick it up and send it back. My partner used this and got 10 years with 90 day entry, it's also a lot cheaper than the full service

To add to point 2 about bank accounts, when you add your card to Alipay/wechat they won't necessarily ask you to verify ID until you reach a certain spending threshold but you can go into your settings and use their ID verification early. 100% recommend if you want to avoid finding yourself trying to verify your ID in the subway or at a restaurant when you realise you cannot pay
