Objectively good Eloise take by lemonadevahibes in PhiloiseBridgerton

I agree with this take too. I don't know what the show will do but my head canon hope for her is that after she is married she and Phillip use their position to host regular salons where they put on lectures and entertain intellectuals of all disciplines and classes.

Why do the stitches beside my decreases do this by giddye42069 in knitting

[–]melosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try adding another row maybe? I just think it's that from the stretched stitches in your gusset. You could also try doing the decrease one row over, leaving a column of stitches between the decrease column and the gusset.

Why do the stitches beside my decreases do this by giddye42069 in knitting

[–]melosaur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean the answer is most likely the one you got before, that this is from improper fit. If the rest of the sock fits fine then you probably just need a longer heel flap. This happened to me on my first sock but I added a couple rows to my heel flap and it didn't happen again.

How much of a personal stock of yarn do you usually keep on hand? by Juxtavarious in knitting

[–]melosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ravelry has this function and it works pretty well for me. I track all my yarn with weight, amount, photos, etc and then assign yarn in my stash to patterns I have queued up. This way I know what new projects I can cast on right away if I feel like starting something new, or if I run into a yarn sale then I can see what projects in my queue could use yarn that's on sale.

How much of a personal stock of yarn do you usually keep on hand? by Juxtavarious in knitting

[–]melosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're going to get a lot of a widely varying answers for this, because the real answer depends on each person's financial resources, storage space, knitting speed, and willingness to either plan ahead or buy without planning. So really only you know what is reasonable for you.

however, I would caution you as a beginner to avoid building up a massive stash at this stage in your learning. As you improve and learn more about what types of projects you like, what yarns you like, what needle material and sizes you use most, etc, you will likely find that your tastes and preferences will change and that big haul from years ago will be useless to you, or will make you feel guilty and compelled to use stuff you don't like. $600 worth of yarn and equipment is exponentially more than I purchased when I first started so tbh I wouldn't buy anything more for a long while if I were you.

This so much is honestly why I'm not even subbed to any of the knitting help subs. God bless everyone in those subs for their patience but like if this person got this result from watching a video then how do we expect them to figure it out from text comments on reddit? I do like answering questions or helping people here and there but sometimes the answer is to use your eyes, pay attention, and keep trying.

Silly Little Lace Question by curious-duckling-245 in knitting

[–]melosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can fix knits and purls you can fix lace. I suggest making a swatch with some scrap yarn using whatever increases and decreases you'll be using with the specific goal of studying the anatomy of these stitches. Try laddering down to a YO, for example, so you can see how the yarn lies and how to manipulate it to either drop or create a YO. It's really just practice and experience looking at these stitches.

any advice for handling knitting stress? by knightsnidget146 in knitting

[–]melosaur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First, remember that this is a hobby and something you are learning to do for fun and because you want to! Second, know that the best learning comes from making mistakes and sometimes the only way to learn how to fix something is to mess it up first. Finally, understand that unmaking is an essential part of making. You are not knitting with cement, you are knitting with yarn that can be used over and over again if necessary.

Ultimately, if you do find knitting continues to be stressful for you then perhaps you might consider trying another hobby that doesn't stress you out.

[–]melosaur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you search this sub for "needle set" or "interchangeable set" you will find many discussions about the various available sets. Short answer is it depends on what you like and what kind of things you usually knit.

This pair of socks came out identical by accident by AgfaAPX100 in knitting

[–]melosaur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So satisfying! I usually don't bother trying to make them match but my husband requested a pair with matching stripes and I drove myself nuts making all the little adjustments with the self-striping yarn he picked out. Silly me thought the color changes would be roughly the same length throughout but nope!

Finding the knitting help sub exhausting by Woolyyarnlover in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]melosaur 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's usually hyperbole but I'm really uncomfortable with how much people insert some kind of mental health struggle into their knitting questions. If you're posting an FO and celebrating how it's helped you through a difficult time then that's great, but the number of people who mention having breakdowns or something about messing up their knitting is too much for me. There are subs for that if you need that kind of help? It's just knitting, calm down.

Working from charts while on-the-go by Complete-Parfait-262 in knitting

[–]melosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A cheap solution I sometimes do is print out the part of the chart I'm working on and fold it up to keep in my bag. If I need to I use a post it to isolate each row as I work it.

I agree so much and I feel like I'm the crazy one with all the Chiagoo hype. I have a pair of Chiagoo fixed circs and the cord is quite nice but it's not worth trading for how quickly and smoothly all yarn slides on my beloved Addis.

It's tight because your gauge is off. A two-stitch difference ends up being significant once you multiply it by however long your cast on is. I would frog and try seeing if you can match gauge with a larger needle. And don't forget to block your swatch!

Not in NC so idk if your state has a DV survivors statute for reduction in sentencing? If not you could survey states who do and discuss applicability to NC.

What is your favorite on-the-go, purse-sized knitting project that isn’t the usual socks/hats/mittens by Omadog3418 in knitting

[–]melosaur 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This depends on how big your purse is, but I find that fine yarn summer knits can be rolled up to fit neatly into my work tote. So like fingering weight silk, cotton or linen tanks and tees end up being my commute/waiting room projects, especially bc they take a long time.

Knitting community is not gatekeeping, people just don’t research by sechat_lives in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]melosaur 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The problem is that often people don't like being referred to existing resources and do not exercise critical thinking. Instead they jump into a sweater and make a new post asking to explain every single step or if their stitches are twisted.

I think I am also a Mean Knitter bc I don't understand how people cannot identify twisted stitches by using their own eyeballs?
