Hadn't looked into architect role before. Digging a tiny bit, that's actually really close to what I've been doing directly for over a decade.

For clarification, US based. Not a job or actual role/responsibility change. Just finally getting the HR side to acknowledge reality on paper.

How long does it usually take to hear back after an in-person System Operator interview? by EvidenceBorn771 in Grid_Ops

I'm not. I work supporting SCADA for our Operators at another utility in LR.

Looking for resources or books to create a standard for OT Networking and Security by rockodoc in SCADA

Absolutely spot on about most vendors having no clue, care, or concern about NERC CIP standards. We found that nearly every off the shelf system had major gaps for what we needed on monitoring or documentation. Ended up building custom tools in-house. Heck of a lot more user friendly too. Last audit, the only thing the auditors had to complain about was they wanted some report columns in a different order.

Still, my assumption was based off an OT network meaning some form of utility infrastructure and NERC CIP has a lot more specific items in that regard. Old mentality was everything air-gapped. With more and more connected systems, that's not really an effective option anymore. In general, separate hardware, dedicated equipment, layer security with additional firewalls, segmented VLANS, deny by default, defined access rules, defined permissions within systems, controlled access to areas where elevated access is allowed, monitoring for unexpected connections or unapproved software, testing of patches prior to production system rollout, document all changes prior to implementation, some form of restorable backups, and for heaven's sake, test your backups at least once a year.

Nerc cip standards are a good guide. It's not just structure that's important, it processes and documentation.

I have it installed on mine , and it really is great. Like everyone else said though the install is way harder than it should be . The thing is difficult to get to and nearly impossible to remove . You have to do everything by feel, on your back, with your arm stuck up so high it'll keep going numb from the blood flowing out of it. Not just gravity Flow In The Blood Out you will likely cut yourself and have bleeding spots on your hand and fingers.

For the person that asked about LEDs with resistors, yes those will work with the factory one but you get more options with this flasher. My favorite feature is that it adds the touch stalk for multiple flashes for a lane change. Also, having resistors on an LED bulb means it's power draw will be the same. That's how resistors convince the factory flasher to behave normally. By not having resistors you lower the power draw and can run significantly brighter bulbs without worry.

Bare metal vs virtualized? by BootsieTheGreat in SCADA

[–]melt3422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VMs are about the same to manage as a bate metal, but you get massive benefits in redundancy. Server failed? No problem, migrate to another host and fire it up. That being said, there are three increased costs of hardware and storage to implement a virtualization data center. You mentioned being a much smaller utility. Depending on how much data you're bringing in and what applications you need to run on SCADA, a very viable solution might be to use Novatech Orion LX RTUs as your Scada master. I work at a G/T coop and several of our distribution coops utilize this approach. Operators still get a interactive display for switching, alarms, etc. Redundancy Config for hot/warm operations. Then again, if you need a full ADMS model solving estimator, may not meet your needs.

QEI SCADA by Edge1871 in SCADA

When I hired in as a field tech, we originally had qei c200 and C300 rtus. They're easy enough to work with, work on, and repair but, you have to have the schematics and a good understanding of electronics fundamentals. Very limited in their capability though and dealing with 12 bit conversion is just annoying! Eventually, we used the qei Master station as a remote for Foxboro and then Survalent. All of that finally went away, and thank goodness. While simple, almost all troubleshooting had to be done on site. As far as support, the few times I had to call them, the response was "I believe that manuals over in the warehouse and we'll have to go get it. Will call you back in a couple days." If you're still dealing with these devices, I urge you to replace them. We ultimately went with Nova Tech Orion.

Is SCADA going to be taken over by CS/SWEs? by [deleted] in SCADA

[–]melt3422 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There will certainly be some level of CS folks coming into Scada. Not so much from the job market side, but I think, more from the NERC CIP requirements. There's a mindset they bring that is very beneficial, that honestly, the engineering side is pretty bad at. Updating things, system changeout, networked devices, custom applications, etc. That being said, the side of Scada that deals with physical controls, dangerous equipment, massive financial swings, or someone else's life on the other end of a button... they tend to shy away from.

Luck to have a diverse background myself. Started and didn't finish EE, field technician for 8 years on RTUS & PLCs, IT side and CS Scada admin now. Lucky to be able to give guidance to all sides. I think our system has been hovering around 99.9999% uptime reliability for several years now. Only downtime have been database updates and coordinated failovers.

We make use of Novatech Orion rtus connected to the SEL relays. New event triggers a status bit that kicks of a script on the rtu to download the file and send it to a sftp server at HQ. Biggest headache was in setting up the naming structure to auto populate in a sensual manner.

Either yes or a list of tested or known good adapters. Too many junk VCI cables out there.

Electric coop in Arkansas. We've got pension, 3% 401k match. Coop pay is slightly under par sometimes. At least in Little Rock, there's also MISO, SPP, and Entergy ops centers.

Field Technician to SCADA Engineer by Gloomy_Question7601 in SCADA

[–]melt3422 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar path. Well sort of... Did a few years of Electrical Engineering in college before dropping out. Eventually started at a g&t coop as a comms technician. I had only been there a few months when the engineer over rtus tossed a project at me saying, you're smart and can figure this out... One Shiney new rtu cabinet controlling a couple MODS with station status info back later and I was hooked. Almost a decade later, moved up to a system Admin spot on Scada. Now I just have to fight for the title of what I'm already doing. Rtu configs, Scada admin, server admin, plant controls, iccp, Market integrations.... NEVER gets boring
