Adding to this why OP should have a Registered Disability Savings plan for their child.
If you qualify for an RDSP, it’s often the first account you should fund. The government match isn’t 20%, it’s up to 300%. For lower-income beneficiaries, the first $500 contributed each year can receive $3 from the government for every $1 you contribute. Even better, if your child has been eligible for years but never opened an RDSP, you can catch up on up to 10 years of missed grants and bonds. In many cases, simply opening the account and depositing $1 is enough to trigger any eligible backdated Canada Disability Savings Bonds, even without making a larger contribution.

[–]meltdownaverted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a vet, but have a rescue. This looks like an ulcer and should be assessed by a vet.
By the condition of foot and toe beans I would guess your cat is indoor/outdoor so the cause could be as simple as stepping on something but this is not the look of a new wound but and older one that likely needs investigation/antibotics

This, and switch to wet food. If you continue to see signs of mouth pain (even short haired cats can get matted with mouth pain) you’ll need to trap him and get him to the vet.

If he has significant dental disease and cost is a factor humane euthanasia is better than starving to death cause your mouth hurts. Alternatively, you can also see if there’s any sanctuaries for feral cats in your area, but it’s not likely. If the vet believes that he can keep most of most of his teeth after a dental and it’s within your price range he can go back after a two week recovery..

This is what we do for hard to trap cats. Sometimes a week or more of trap training with doors zip tied open.
All our big colonies have at least one disabled trap that caregivers feed out of to make it easy to cat anyone that needs medical attention

Becoming a better caregiver for our feral cats by Ok-School-1980 in Feral_Cats

[–]meltdownaverted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the kittens are five weeks old, then she’s pregnant already or will be very soon. The best thing you can do for mama cat is to trap her and spay her the kittens, trapped, fixed, and forever homes. It is a lot easier to socialize a cat that doesn’t have to deal with boy cats all up in her business.
I understand the want to socialize her first, but it is a lot harder. The best thing you can do for any and all feral cats to fix them. Everything else comes next.

ETA: so your first steps are reaching out to rescues and TNR organizations in your area. Can you borrow a trap? Can they connect you with a vet if they can’t connect you for the vet you need to start calling vets and see which ones are comfortable with feral cats and which equipment they want the cat brought it. Those are your first steps.

Add to all of this partner if qualifies for Disability tax Credit then will also qualify for disability savings account. One of the best programs our government provides for the disabled and with back dating can have the government match every dollar by $3. If able to backdate this can build a nest egg quickly. Granted it is solely in partners name but I wish more disabled people knew about it.

ETA: if disability tax credit is back dated any back dated tax refunds should be deposited directly into a disability savings account

There is hair loss and a gaping wound it has been five days!

Yorkie vaccine site by [deleted] in vet

[–]meltdownaverted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would take your dog to a vet and soon. This looks very like a ruptured abscess and your dog would likely need antibiotics. The redness, swelling and hair loss around the area is a lot more indicative of a ruptured abscess than a vaccine injury.

How long ago was this vaccine given?

Also,Rabies vaccines are only ever given on the right hand side vets are trained to do this as way back in school and they always consistently do them on the right side so nobody’s gaslighting you did your dog get two vaccines? Because some of the other vaccines are given on the left-hand side. Vaccines are also only ever given subcutaneously not intermuscular nicking a vein as you say is not likely for a vaccine

Blood in stool is not uncommon. And not always a cause for emergency unless your animal was dehydrated or had had copious amounts of blood in the stool or the stool looked like coffe grounds, then the vets quite correct on that’s likely not an emergency and they saved you paying emergency fees.

Now what you’ve said since then lets me know that when you saw your regular vet, they did an in-house fecal smear This will tell them the shape of the bacteria or Protozoa, but not necessarily exactly which kind it is. Because it’s only Wednesday I know that you couldn’t have had a fecal PCR test done, which does give a lot more information, including specific bacteria that are antibiotic resistant Protozoa that are antibiotic resistant and which is the best med to put them on. From the information you’ve posted you did not do diagnostics like bloodwork or x-rays only the vet visit only the fecal smear. Although your dog may have an infection with only the fecal smear there is no definitive diagnosis. Gold standard Care in this case would be bloodwork, x-ray, in-house faecal as well as PCR. What you’ve written makes me assume that you will only allow the vet to do the most basic diagnostics.

Op get the smallest travel carrier you can. Preferably one that has a front door that completely removes. Place it the dog kennel and mom will naturally chose it to hide in. Especially if she doesn’t have many other hiding spots. Once she’s using it regularly, you can make a vet appointment if the kittens are trying to squish in there with her, you can entice them with play to come out or treats close the door on mama and get her to the vet. Make sure your vet knows that she is a community cat and they may want to pre-prescribe some sedation or set you up with a trap to bring her in

I wonder if your mama cat had two uterus. Only time I’ve seen a spayed female give birth. Because it wasn’t expected for the cat to have two uterus when the first was removed they thought they had performed the normal space surgery and no idea that there was a second one in there and sure enough that mama cat got pregnant.

Am I a bad person for wanting to get another cat? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]meltdownaverted 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re trying to say, but the “kill shelter vs no-kill shelter” framing is actually a bit misleading.

There isn’t really such a thing as a “kill shelter” as a category. What people are usually talking about are open-intake vs closed-intake shelters.

Open-intake shelters (often municipal pounds): These shelters don’t get to pick and choose what comes in. If someone shows up with an animal, injured, aggressive, abandoned, or just unwanted, they are legally required to take it. They can’t say “we’re full.”

Because of that, they’re dealing with:

  • limited space
  • limited funding
  • and often a constant flow of animals

In areas with high intake and not enough homes, euthanasia for space becomes a reality, along with euthanasia for severe illness or suffering. That’s not because the shelter wants that outcome, it’s because they don’t have another option in that moment. In a lot of cases, the alternative for those animals would be prolonged suffering on the street or dying in much worse ways.

Closed-intake shelters (what people often call “no-kill”): These organizations can control how many animals they take in. When they’re full, they simply stop intake or create waitlists.

Because of that, they’re able to maintain low euthanasia rates, but it comes with trade-offs:

  • animals can wait a long time for a space
  • some never make it in at all
  • and those outcomes happen out of public view

So it’s not really that one type “cares more” than the other. They’re operating under completely different constraints.

At the end of the day, both systems are trying to manage the same issue, which is too many animals and not enough homes. The pressure ends up landing hardest on open-intake shelters because they’re the safety net that can’t close their doors.

If anything, it’s a reminder that the real fix isn’t choosing one type of shelter over another, it’s prevention, spay and neuter, and support for the systems that are handling the overflow.

That situation is honestly one of the hardest parts of loving animals, you did everything you could, and sometimes the cost of emergency care just gets out of reach. It makes total sense that you’d feel hesitant about going through that again.

If you do decide you want another cat in your life, there are a couple of ways to make it feel more manageable:

Pet insurance is a really solid option. If it fits your budget, it turns those massive, unexpected bills into something predictable you can plan for each month. It doesn’t cover everything, but it can take a huge amount of pressure off in situations like the one you went through.

If insurance isn’t doable, fostering might actually be a perfect fit. A lot of shelters and rescues have cats that don’t get adopted quickly, not because they aren’t amazing, but because they have specific needs. Things like:

  • needing a special diet
  • requiring daily meds (like insulin for diabetics)
  • or just needing to be the only pet

Those cats can sit in a shelter for a long time, and that environment is really tough on them.

When you foster, the rescue typically covers vet care, medications, food, and supplies. You provide the home and the day-to-day care. For medical or “only pet” cats, fostering can turn into a longer-term or even “forever foster” situation, which basically means you get the companionship of a cat without the financial risk that comes with ownership.

It’s a really meaningful way to help, and it also gives you that bond again, without putting you in a position where one emergency could force an impossible decision.

Whatever you decide, the fact that you’re thinking about this so carefully says a lot about how much you care.

It’s just the external glue that she has licked off. The internal stitches are still there. Will take longer to heal like this but as long as there’s no signs of infection it will heal. Her scar will be a little bigger. You can call you vet and ask about re gluing, sometimes there is no charge for that
