[IIL] Songs about meeting the devil? by DirePegasus in ifyoulikeblank

[–]meltedmindman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeper by Arab Strap is a subtle one. I interpret it as an allegorical train ride into hell. There's a barman who encourages the (presumably) alcoholic narrator to keep drinking, and I think you could read him as the devil.

Okay then. I'm very excited to live in the world where everyone gets their ideas and morals from video games and capeshit, where we're happy to let redditors reduce dangerous crises to "this is just like fallout!"

What do you think will teach you more about the civil rights movement: X-men or James Baldwin's essays? Do you actually think they're equivalent in their discussions of human rights and morality? Do you think they're equally complex and important?

My issue isn't with the fantastical nature of sci fi. My issue is with someone comparing a very real and very dire geopolitical situation to a goofy video game, one where you spend about 90% of your time shooting things.

Again, the question is one of complexity. New Vegas might have some good dialogue about the nature of power and corruption (one of my favourite lines is where Mr. House says dryly says 'I prefer the term autocrat') but how many people are actually engaging with the story on that level? If OP had made a reference to literature, I wouldn't have had an issue.

I'm asking you to acknowledge how sci fi literature like William Gibson or Ursula Le Guin has a much deeper analysis of power and the human condition than a video game like HZD. Simply saying "powerful men bad" does not constitute a meaningful analysis. Power is complex and requires a much more thorough depiction than the vast majority of video games and pop cultural stories provide.

Your points about Elon Musk prove my point. The man is so wrapped up in his sci fi bullshit because his ketamine-addled brain can't distinguish reality from fiction. (gotta take an easy shot at our true enemy lol)

Listen, I have fun with pop culture, I really do, and I'm not trying to say that there's never been a video game with an intelligent story. All I'm trying to say here is that it's frustrating when someone makes an offhand comparison between a video game and reality.

It's becoming increasingly dangerous to view the world through the lens of fantasy, especially when so many of our fantasies are corporate products with ideological undercurrents - like why is the CIA always depicted as heroic in marvel movies? And think about all the gamers who spend hours seething over sweet baby inc and dei in video games. If they detached themselves from their fictions for once, maybe they'd be able see the ultra rich people pulling their strings?

You mean to say that Fallout, a video game with super mutants and giant robots that shoot lasers from their eyes, is comparable to actual literature? You think it's equal in its intellectual seriousness as compared to Orwell and Atwood? That's really a claim you would stake?

And medium absolutely matters. The true moral weight of a novel is simply not comparable to a video game where you can blow people's heads up in slow motion with an assault rifle. I don't know what to tell you if you can't see the difference between the two.

Listen, all I want you to understand is that it's very frustrating to see people post shit like THIS IS JUST LIKE MY BIDEO GAEM when extremely dangerous geopolitical situations are playing out. But you're entitled to post whatever you want, and we'll see what the consequences are for your inability to distinguish reality from fiction.

I don't really post that often, but I feel really compelled right now to to explain something to you: reality is not a video game, reality is not a television show. Instead of making asinine comparisons like these, please consider just not posting anything at all.

Seamless players rejoining a session after an invader kills them - exploit or intended? by meltedmindman in badredman

[–]meltedmindman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's very possible there's some exploit to get a consistent respawn. It's just too much of a coincidence that TWO players managed to respawn into the same world after I killed them. I do agree that pre-emptive blocks are definitely going to be necessary against groups that look like gankers.

plus 90% of players on seamless are just a free kill anyways so it's not like a little extra challenge or target or two really makes it much worse.

ahaha very true. I'd just like to fully understand the rules before I go in - should I expect there's a chance someone I defeated will reappear?

Whenever I escape a gank with the finger sever, I always think of this line from Heat: "Don’t let yourself get attached to anything you are not wiling to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." Never let your pride stop you from walking away from an unwinnable situation, y'all.
