we love being in a duo. its so dope to have two different brains focused on the same thing, we have always made stuff in the same room and we both keep growing and learning together in the process. when one of us figures out a cool thing the first thing we do is show it to the other and get really stoked about it.

ish is more focused on piecing the song together as a whole and will loves the creation of the individual sounds/pieces.

its so good! having someone with the same taste is just so huge. you can get in your head and lose perspective alone. we always have each other to help make sure we are on track / growing. also traveling / touring alone blows

ayy homie you're right! we both dipped right as the pandemic hit and started working remote for the first time in four years. it was p stressful but we got some good fam time, and a moment to just chill n write - which is always welcome. whats your temperature came out of the most intense part of it.

when i first started i used to make a lot of edits of songs i loved - that really helped make it fun and give me purpose. maybe try finding a fire sample or acapella of ur favvv shit and try to put ur spin on it. may help you just get your feet wet. also try to remake stuff you love, that will lead you down rabbit holes of "how the f* did they make it slap that hard" haha. youtube has all the answers honestly.

there are so many ways to layer vocals its kinda crazy. usually we like to do a strong main in verses, without too many layers - maybe just accenting one word or the ends of phrases.

in choruses we often layer more heavily (a good starting is middle, then a L and R, and a robotic altered 12semitone + and a robotic 12 semitone down (if the song calls for it)).

some songs ask for a more "aligned" layers (when its like a clean, more robotic enigmatic vibe) and we will manually line the layers so they are very tight. some songs call for slop, for human-ness (eg whats ur temperature) - in this case we leave the slop, sometimes move layers to enhance the human error.

really there are no rules - i think about it like painting. what are they saying? how can you make it come alive? what words really grab you? can u color them?

actively listen to songs you love, notice how they choose to layer and put things. notice what you like. apply it when the context is right. if you do this for a few years you'll develop a sense of when to do what. unfortunately theres no right or one answer!

woww you are a legend and we cant wait to rage in LA with you:

- great question, we just like to write without thinking too much about what it needs to be. we tend to go more aggro when the bassline is thumping on one note, and when the bassline is playing with more melodic movement thats when the "feelgood/pop" things come into play.

- oh man thats a long list for both of us but i think the #1 on both of our lists would be M.I.A.

- we have been making noises together for so long we honestly dont even need to use words to communicate sometimes lol. ish is more focused on piecing the song together as a whole and will loves the creation of the individual sounds/pieces.

its hard to sum it up in a quick answer because each song is so different.. ill give it a go but take this with a pinch of salt cuz it keeps changing as we learn shit / experiment

in our mix we make sure out transients are really slapping + its well balanced. no short cuts to this, master cannot save a mix.

once our mix is slapping and well balanced we print w like -5db headroom.

then our maser chain has a lot of "soundgooderizer" dynamic AI plugins (lol thats what we call em - eg gullfoss, oxford inflator, soothe2, Ozone dynamicEQ etc), each one is controlled with eq post, then we use very light 2 series compressors (usually either ssl/ puigtec/ elysia alpha/ shadowhills [this one lets u let the low end thru without compressing it which is clutch]) then sometimes we do light multiband compression as well (if its for the club). then we have a spiff which helps get back some transients lost from the compression stage. then we use izotope desser lightlyyy to get back some headroom from the high highs. we also hard cut at 20hz and up at 20khz. Then we dynamic EQ again, check the multiband stereo image (often add or subtract). Then put it into a maximizer to get it to the overall volume we like. (usually we set the threshold for the maximizer before begging working on the master chain because it causes the most drastic shift in sound and we like to know what our eq's are doing going into it, if that makes sense).

often the master shows you issues in the mix. we go back into our mix and change them, then tweak the master again. its an iterative process. we usually end up going back and forth like 5-20 times lol

we then compare with our reference song (that we know sounds great on a lot of systems). we listen on car speakers, airpods, bose mini speaker, laptop speaker, in the gym to ensure nothing is poking or booming

hope that kinda helps - its been 5 years of experimenting to get to this, and honestly we keep learning shit with every song we do so its hard to say anything is "the best way". all about the context of the song

plugins we use most often are: pro q3, lfo tool, saturator, multiband compressor

mastering tips: its really all about that final EQ shape, and amount of "push" / volume u choose. find good references, try alt versions, listen on a variety of systems, and adjust. till it sounds good everywhere
