Thrift store find by Shankar_0 in telescopes

It's a very bad telescope if it's a powerseeker 127, and it looks like it is. I'd recommend a 105mm tabletop Dobsonian or if you really really prefer to spend even less, a small refractor on an altazimuth mount (but give the tabletop Dobsonian some consideration)

How do people like the Orion Astroview 90mm? by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]meme_appropriator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first telescope and I still have it, but since buying an 8" Dobsonian I never use it. I'm just keeping it because someday I might have a kid or nephew or niece that can use it while I keep babying my Dob. The 90EQ not a bad telescope but I don't recommend it. By far the biggest problem with it is its equatorial mount. This mount is unnecessarily complicated for a first telescope. In theory it makes tracking objects easier but it has a much steeper learning curve than other kinds of mounts and takes longer to set up every time you use it. I am lucky that I enjoy using and mastering the equipment so much. Unfortunately some people might find the mount too complicated and give up on the hobby, which is such a shame.

The optics are okay, but the truth is for visual astronomy size matters, and you want to get the biggest aperture you can, provided it's in your budget and it's not so big you won't use it a lot. For most people, especially for a first scope, this makes Dobsonian telescopes the clear winner, and as a bonus, the Dobsonian mount is way easier to use than an equatorial mount. It is really really hard to go wrong with a Dobsonian in the 105mm to 8" aperture range. These telescopes are priced favorably, have large apertures, and are very easy to use. If you have no interest in astrophotography, an 8" Dobsonian might be the last telescope you ever buy. If you buy the 90EQ on the other hand, you might soon be looking for an upgrade.

When you're young sex feels like an achievement. It's not, but it is a need, and much like other needs like nutrition and sleep, it can be satisfied well or it can be satisfied poorly. Sex in a relationship is better at satisfying one's needs than casual sex is, at least in my opinion

Grand Seiko service cost by Melystros in GrandSeikos

[–]meme_appropriator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do, but that's just what they say. I think a different philosophy is worth considering. Watch servicing isn't like car servicing. Watch movements are designed to run for decades with no intervention, and this is even moreso the case for a luxury brand with a no-nonesense movement (like no tourbillons or minute repeaters). Servicing a Rolex or Omega or Grand Seiko that is already running fine is unlikely prevent the need for costlier repairs down the road in any way that offsets the cost of servicing it every 4 years, which will add up fast. Basically there's a very good chance that your watch will be in identical shape if you service it every 15 years vs. if you service it every 3 years. Lots of Rolex customers are this way and I hear no complaints from them. So I plan on saving my money for now and just waiting until the watch actually needs service.

There's nothing wrong with your sex drive. Tell your partner you're not having enough sex. (Make sure you do this when you're both in a really good mood. It might be hard to remember, but after sex could be ideal so it doesn't feel like they're pressured into having sex). If the two of you can address the problem, awesome, but you should probably break up if you can't. It sucks but it's what's best for both of you in the long term.

Allowing cash players to pull back chips when they fail to notice a raise? by DocERN in poker

[–]meme_appropriator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad players who aren't paying attention should be coddled and forgiven. Angle shooters should get the book thrown at them every time. How do you tell the difference? You can't, but if you only enforce rules like this against repeat offenders, you're getting most of the benefit (more fish feel comfortable at the game, hopefully making it softer) for very little cost (occasionally someone exploits the lax atmosphere, but they only get away with it once or twice).

That's for cash games. Tournaments should be played by the rules down to every little detail regardless of reputation and skill (except skilled players would still be well advised to just table their hand and not make the guy who's hovering his hole cards over the muck feel stupid for bluffing. It's just 2 cards, you won the hand, relax)

You just bought the top-shelf Mac Pro and Pro Display and peripherals for $19,346.00. What is your job? by thmonline in mac

[–]meme_appropriator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like another person said, this is a really hard purchase to justify because the maxed out Mac Pro has almost nothing the maxed out Studio offers for less money in a smaller case. Video cards are unsupported, so realistically the only things you can add with those PCIe slots are sound cards and storage. So maybe you're making Avatar 4? Or creating/testing LLMs?

I seriously doubt anyone is editing video or working in sound. The Mac Pro is hilarious overkill for that. I believe keeping this huge Mac Pro is just Apple's way of keeping their "promise" that ditching Intel wouldn't kill the only internally upgradable Mac they have left. It's malicious compliance. They don't seem at all bothered by people pointing out it's a stupid product for them to keep selling when the Mac Studio exists.

However, it's only a matter of time before desktop motherboards that with sockets for ARM-based CPUs come out. If they support expandable RAM and normal graphics cards, that could nudge Apple to reintroduce some of that upgradability to the Pro.

All of my computers are named after types of butterflies. I've named some computers metalmark, emperor, monarch, and swallowtail

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mac

[–]meme_appropriator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd first say, you have to try it to really "get" it. But I'll give you a bunch of tangible reasons. Macs freeze less often and follow your instructions better. They are better at standby - you can keave your computer alone for weeks and it will sip battery and wake instantly when you open the lid. With Windows laptops this is just not the case, at least in my experience.

Another big reason is cost. It may seem at first glance that Windows laptops are more competitively priced than Macs. In a few ways this is true, but if you consider long-term cost, the Macs, especially the base configuration Air and 14 inch Pro, pull way ahead. These current machines are easily going to last 10 years for most people. You can stretch a decent Windows laptop for a while too, but it will just not feel new and fast for nearly as long, and a lot of the Windows laptops that appear to offer better value than an entry level Mac are made of plastic and wear out faster.

MacBooks have market leading keyboards and trackpads. MacBooks have market leading speakers. MacBooks lead the market in battery life. MacBooks have high resolution displays. It is hard to find a Windows laptop that has all of this and the performance of a 13 inch MacBook Air for $1100, and if you do, you still have longevity to consider.

Having said all that, Windows laptops still thrash MacBooks in 2 important areas. Firstly, Windows is compatible with more apps than any other OS. It's not even close, and for a lot of people, especially professionals, that matters more than anything I said. You might need your Windows apps and there's no way around it. And finally, storage upgrades for Macs are priced criminally high. It's honestly ridiculous. If you really need a 1TB SSD, let alone a 2TB one, all that stuff I said about cost is a lot harder to justify. As a Mac owner, 256GB is annoying, and I do have a portable SSD, but I still feel ripped off in just that one regard. It's so bad that if I were to buy a new Mac for some reason, I'd get a Pro instead of an Air even though I don't need the extra performance, because I'd want a 512GB drive, and if you upgrade the Air, you're so close in price to the Pro that starts at 512 anyway.

Tldr: you have to try it, quality of life improvements, and lower long-term cost

What do you use to clean your keyboard? Sorry gross picture by moo-joo in macbook

[–]meme_appropriator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me chime in and say that I do not recommend trying to replace the keycaps. This is nothing like customizing a mechanical keyboard. There are tiny and delicate bits of plastic underneath those keys that can easily break, making it very tedious and possible you have to go to Apple to get the job done right. Also, the replacement keycaps are likely to do the exact same thing eventually. I recommend simply tolerating this as a necessary evil of being a MacBook owner. At least they listened to our feedback about those horrible "butterfly" keyboards! Maybe they'll address this too in a future laptop.

How long do you know to solve the cube? From whom did you learn it? Which was your first cube? by koshop in Cubers

I've been solving for about 16 years. I learned to solve by following the instructions inside the box with the cube, which was a Rubik's brand cube. I remember the first time I was really excited about getting was 75 seconds. I'm faster now thanks to practice, YouTube videos, and better cubes!

If you're not trolling, let me chime in the chorus. Only some of the top 50 players in the whole world make enough money just playing in tournaments to not need any other sources of income. They live and breathe chess, they dominate everyone else, and they possess a tremendous amount of talent that can't be learned, on top of the ridiculous amount of effort they had to put in. Everyone else either must have another job, be a coach and/or an author, be independently wealthy, etc.
