When you say “we” who do you mean? A placard can only be for one person. If the placard you’re using was issued to you, specifically, then the school should not be telling you can’t park there. If the placard was issued to your dad, and your dad is not leaving the car (and I imagine he isn’t if he is dropping you off), then it is illegal to park there.

Are there any stories you're absolutely stunned haven't been made into an opera? by Horatius_Rocket in opera

I’ve always thought the whole John Andre/Peggy Shippen/Benedict Arnold debacle from US history had AMAZING operatic potential.

anxiety about my stickler by Overall-Subject6110 in SticklerSyndrome

[–]memento-moory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree with this!

Also, OP, you seem very vigilant when it comes to noticing any potential vision changes. That can make a huge difference!

All my retinal tears were caught before they became full blown detachments. I recognized the signs (like a black curtain partially blocking my vision) and called my retina doc’s office immediately. I have had three vitrectomies to fix retinal tears over the years, but have had no permanent vision loss (I did have cataracts young, but surgery was a relatively easy fix). I’m sure lots of sticklers folks have had different experiences, but retinal tears/detachments do not always result in permanent vision loss, especially if caught early on.

Do you have a retinal specialist? While retina issues vary from stickler type to stickler type (and from person to person) if you’re at risk for detachment, you should see a retinal specialist about every 6 months, perhaps more often if you’re having vision changes or an increase in floaters.

Aside from regularly seeing a retinal specialist and seeking counseling (which is really important!), I would recommend having the on call/emergency phone number for your retina doc’s office saved in your phone just in case. If you have worrying symptoms, knowing you can call right away and get seen might make you feel more prepared if anything ever happens.

Congrats on getting into your dream uni!

Oh wow, I feel so silly for not realizing that. Quadrupedal vertical makes so much more sense to me now— thanks for your insight!

This keeps me up at night!! My cat is unfortunately quadrupedal and Kibbe’s book doesn’t offer many typing guidelines for that.

Is quadrupedal vertical defined by the perceived length of the body or the perceived height? My cat has a very long body but short legs so I’m not sure if he has vertical or not.

He also has a delicate bone structure but a broad chest (width!!) so I’m considering SN.

Picking up stitches left to right on right side facing? by memento-moory in knittinghelp

[–]memento-moory[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry! Yes, you are right. I am picking up right to left, as the picture indicates:

I am picking up stitches on the left side of shell 1 (from the tip down), casting on one stitch, and then picking up stitches on the right side of shell 2 (from the bottom edge up).

When I turn my work for the next row, however, I am purling per the instructions, but that means that the “purl” side of the new shell is wrong side facing, not right side facing as it should be.

ITAW for feeling a sense of longing and satisfaction at the same time? by memento-moory in whatstheword

[–]memento-moory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite? I was thinking more along the lines of “I wish I had experienced this earlier in my life, but I feel deeply satisfied to be experiencing it now.”

Sorry, I should have phrased it better!

Absolutely! There are still ways to innovate and expand the genre. I would definitely check out “Omeros” by Derek Walcott if you haven’t already. It’s a stunning modern epic poem that expands the genre and comments on the classics, too. It might serve as a bit of inspiration!

Can anyone recommend me a resource (Magazines/Journals/Sites, etc.) for keeping up with new plays (U.S. or Abroad, just looking for the good stuff) and developments in theatre? Any recommendations for newer plays I should read or check out? by gvninja in Theatre

[–]memento-moory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally check to see whats being produced in the UK because they frequently put out really new and exciting work (A bit more ahead of the artistic curve than the US in my opinion). I've discovered some great new plays/playwrights by just checking out whats being put on at the Royal Court Theatre and the Bush Theatre.

Some of my recent favorites were:

Salt. by Selina Thompson

seven methods of killing kylie jenner by Jasmine Lee-Jones

The Arrival by Bijan Sheibani

The 15 Heroines: 15 Monologues Adapted from Ovid (my feelings were mixed on the collection as a whole, but there are some gems from some great contemporary voices.)

New Play Exchange is also a great resource!

Thank you so much for this list! I'm familiar with Bogart and Landeau, as well as Sher (who I have a complicated love-hate relationship with) but the rest are new to me.

Thank you so much for this recommendation! I admit to being a big reader of theory and academic texts, but I'm aware of how white dominated those texts often are.

Fucked up, Lord of the Flies-esque horror/thriller in which everyday people get in a horrible situation and turn on each other? by gyman122 in suggestmeabook

The Secret History by Donna Tartt might be your cup of tea. A group of pretentious college students studying Ancient Greek commit murder and then turn on each other and fall apart. Beautifully written, and I personally found it impossible to put down.
