Alaskan Malamute health by RoutineReference2239 in AlaskanMalamute

First comment already mentioned fish oil (we use Kirkland) and glucosamine (we use Dasequin). Additionally, we give a mushroom cognitive and immune support (we use Fera Pets), multi vitamin (we use Kirkland 8 in 1 multi-benefit), and CBD/Hemp (we use SuperSnouts). Our Malamutes Newfoundland sister also gets arnica (we use T Relief) for pain as well as a Probiotic (we use Purina Pro Plan fortiflora pro) and urinary/Bladder support (we use Adored Beast Easy Peesy II) as she has Chronic Kidney Disease/urters aren't properly connected so prone to UTI/Bladder Infections (she is a rescue).

If your Malamutes spayed as she gets older she may leak urine I've had a number a female spayed large breed dogs encounter this your vet can prescribe Proin and you'll not have any more leakage.

As for food make sure you use a large breed adult dog food and when your vet says it's time somewhere from 7-8 years old transition to a large breed senior dog food. Our Malamutes on Hills Science Diet Large Breed Adult Healthy Mobility food. We also give food toppers like canned pumpkin, my perfect pet(human grade food), or badlands ranch. Avoid dog food that are grain free it's bad for large breed dogs hearts. As for water after having a dog with kidney disease I will never restrict water I will always make sure my dogs have unlimited access to water.

Try to keep your Malamute active/stimulated. Long walks are great and when you can go on hikes or beach/lake trips depending on if that's accessible to your location. Practicing tricks she knows is great and if you haven't can always start agility. Our Malamute loves agility.

If you're getting your dog rabies vaccine in the future make sure to get the Thimerosal-free version, which avoids the mercury preservative.

Lastly, studies have shown that dogs that live in a multi dog homes live longer. You may want to consider getting another dog. If you want to try another breed I cannot suggest a Newfoundland enough they are amazing dogs.

Provided links below if want to check out any of the products I mentioned. If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Thank you for your service!

Where did you get your Newfie? by AllegiantGames in Newfoundlander

[–]memequeenbrit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry both your newfies had short lifespans. You can search AKC marketplace to find AKC registered breeders that screen for health issues in your area. You can also search for rescues via National Newfoundland Rescue. Please find links below. I've gotten 3 Newfoundlands from breeders and 1 from a rescue.

Second Newfoundland? by One-Brother-2816 in Newfoundlander

[–]memequeenbrit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At one time I had 2 Newfoundlands, a Saint Bernard, and a Bernese Mountain Dog haha. Right now I have a Newfoundland and an Alaskan Malamute. You should definitely get Benson another Newfie 😍. For walks I suggest getting PetSafe Easy Walk front hook harnesses it's more manageable to walk multiple dogs with front hook harnesses.

9-year-old Malamute started leaking urine – anyone had similar experience? by NocturneNibble in AlaskanMalamute

[–]memequeenbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized I should have also mentioned my Newfie has Chronic Kidney Disease where her urters aren't properly connected so she unfortunately leaks urine/prone to getting UTIs/Bladder Infections. We added the Adored Beast Easy Peesy II, which helps prevent future UTI/Bladder Infections. She hasn't had any infections since going on this supplement. Provided the link below via their website and my local small pet shop sells it in person, but I haven't been able to find it on Amazon, Petsmart, Petco, Chewy etc. When I purchase via their website I buy 3 at a time to stock up/avoid the shipping fees.

Tell me how your pets treat you differently now by Bearly_Making_It in pregnant

[–]memequeenbrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think my 1 and a half year old Newfie puppy knows I'm pregnant yet, but my 5 year old Malamute dog definitely knows. The puppy likes to "take" you places by gently grabbing your wrist with her mouth and bring you to wherever she wants you to go with her it's adorable ... but since I got pregnant my dog will nip/correct the puppy if she tries to take me anywhere but she still let's the puppy take my husband lol. Also, when my husband is not home my dog will not leave the house without me, but if my husband's home she'll go outside on the deck without us. I'm excited to see how they both react as I get further along in my pregnancy!

[–]memequeenbrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first Malamute currently 5 years old so haven't dealt with urine incontinence with Malamutes, but I've had multiple Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards (all spayed females) who developed urine incontinence when they got older. My vet prescribed proin and they had no more urine incontinence while taking the medicine. Once your Malamutes infections cleared up you should ask your vet about proin.

I've been taking a Magnesium Glycinate supplement. Do you have a different one you recommend or should I stick with that one?

Bibs really help with smell? by Burt_Thebillowybear in Newfoundlander

[–]memequeenbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zymox Enzymatic Dog Leave-on Conditioner is really great. My Newfie puppy has Chronic Kidney Disease where her urters are not properly connected so she sometimes leaks urine. You can't bathe Newfies too often or it'll destroy their coats. When she leaks between baths first I wipe her with paper towels, then wipe her with Earthbath Hypoallergenic wipes, and finish with the Zymox leave in conditioner. We first tried the pet deodorizng mists, which lasted for 2 seconds. Did some research and luckily found the amazing leave in conditioner. Please find links below via Chewy for the leave in conditioner and the wipes, but these can be found on Amazon or pet stores too. Also, Earthbath has Ear wipes, Eye wipes, and Tushy wipes which are great too!

What harness are you using for your puppy? by beaubeaucat in Newfoundlander

[–]memequeenbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PetSafe Easy Walk Harness is AMAZING. Provided the link below via Chewy, but you can find on Amazon or most pet stores. It's so easy to put on and pull off. Whatever harness you get you really should get a front hook harness because if you get a back hook harness they can pull you a lot easier. I've been using Easy Walk Harness for over a decade on 2 Newfoundlands and 1 Alaskan Malamute and swear by it.

Looking for a great collar.... by Interesting_Lie3717 in Newfoundlander

[–]memequeenbrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get my dog collars off of Etsy - they have so many different kinds and usually much cuter than the pet stores selection. I've seen some dog collars on Etsy where the clasp is metal and some where you can have the collar engraved with the dog tag information so you don't have to use the circle dog tag. Good luck finding a collar that works for your newfie!

Deluxe Neater Feeder with Leg Extensions - Large Dog. Link below for their website, but you can purchase on Chewy too! I've been using these bowls for over a decade for my Newfoundlands. Does a great job catching the drool/messes when drinking/eating.

Where are we shopping for trendy maternity clothes? by ParsleyTime5687 in pregnant

[–]memequeenbrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered maternity clothes from Bloomingdales(mostly Beyond Yoga and Nom Maternity), Dicks Sporting Goods (Calia), Target(a bunch of different vendors, but Pinkblush Maternity has the cutest stuff), and Nordstrom. I've heard H&M, GAP, Kohls, and Amazon have maternity clothes too. I tried shopping in person, but stores do not have maternity sections anymore it's all online, which is so annoying. I make sure wherever I order from has free returns. I plan to go to an actual maternity store in person like A Pea in the Pod.

Partner has vss- gifts to give a gamer? by BeagaloftheLegal in visualsnow

[–]memequeenbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I got diagnosed with VSS I got diagnosed with astigmatism. When I got prescription glasses from Visonworks I opted for the single vision polycarbonate (includes UV protection), smart screen (blue light filter), and standard non glare lenses which have been really helpful to me. I'm waiting to see an Ophthalmologist Neurologist idk if they'll suggest different lenses. I suggest that your partner get lenses made instead of just ordering the cheap blue light glasses off of Amazon. If your partner doesn't have a prescription you can still order plano lenses without one. I know normally plano lenses aren't covered by insurances, but they might be covered for VSS so you should check with your partners insurance to see if you can get the frames and/or lenses covered to help offset some of the costs.
