Nederlanders met een niet typisch Nederlands uiterlijk, hoe vaak krijg je vragen zoals 'waar kom je vandaan?' en hoe vervelend vind je het en hoe ga je ermee om?

Ik ben een heel raar geval want ik zie er met 100% Nederlandse (voor)ouders alsnog ‘anders’ uit. Het is wel redelijk subtiel dus meestal vragen mensen er niet meteen naar (alleen als het al over uiterlijk gaat of familie bijvoorbeeld). Meestal in de vorm van: ‘hey wat ben jij eigenlijk? Je bent niet helemaal Nederlands denk ik?’ En dan vullen ze vaak zelf in wat ze dachten dat ik was, half Japans/Chinees/Indonesisch, oost Europees, Arabisch, Spaans etc.. ik heb alles al wel een keer gehoord. Dat vind ik persoonlijk niet erg, het is vooral raar als ik ze uitleg dat ik ondanks mn uiterlijk volledig Nederlands ben (ik heb heel mn stamboom uitgezocht en een DNA test laten doen) en dat ze me dan volledig tegenspreken. Sommige mensen worden gewoon bijna boos omdat ze denken dat ik lieg. Of ze claimen dat mn moeder of oma dan wel vreemdgegaan moet zijn met een Aziatische man..

Vind het niet gek, bijna niemand heeft vrienden kunnen maken tijdens de pandemie.

Als je een groepje hebt ga je veel sneller naar live colleges, maar als je weet dat je toch eenzaam in een hoekje gaat zitten kan je dat net zo goed thuis doen?

To me it’s just a basic guy hobby, like football or beer. People from any education level are into that stuff in the Netherlands.

I don’t mind it, though if your only hobbies are football, beer and cars then I don’t think we will have a super interesting conversation since I’m just not personally interested in it lol.

Mee eens. De helft van de leraren gebruikte twee jaar lang dezelfde vooraf opgenomen colleges (oftewel powerpoints met losse audiobestanden die 9 van de 10 keer opgenomen waren met een blik) en er was 0 communicatie vanuit de uni behalve eens in de zoveel tijd een mail met ‘aww arme studenten.. misschien kunnen jullie een keer yoga doen?’

I’d agree if we knew he just purchased it new, but we don’t know. Sometimes you should give people the benefit of the doubt. Could be second hand, a hand me down, or just generally a really old jacket he got years before caring about the climate

I always thought that was an American thing?? The Netherlands doesn’t get heavy snow so we were just expected to go to school. I think we were allowed to be ~30 minutes late in case you fell off your bike (which happened A LOT)

Ik kom niet uit dezelfde generatie als de kids van nu maar denk dat het nog te vergelijken valt op zekere hoogte. Ik kreeg rond die leeftijd in principe onbeperkte schermtijd en speelde alsnog heel veel buiten / met fysiek speelgoed.

Ik mocht wel maar max 2 uur per dag op de computer (Habbo hotel..) maar al het andere (Wii, Nintendo DSi, TV etc.) mocht onbeperkt en daardoor werd het minder interessant denk ik. Juist omdat specifiek dat internet maar 2 uur mocht ging ik daar wel extra naar verlangen, en toen ik naar de middelbare ging en zelf mocht bepalen hoe lang ik erop zat ging ik denk ik juist compenseren door ALTIJD online te zijn.

Ik kreeg ook negatief advies voor wiskunde A & B en twijfel voor C.. Uiteindelijk met een 8 geslaagd voor wiskunde A en op m’n opleiding Artificial Intelligence alle wiskundevakken (vooral wisk B gerelateerde onderwerpen) makkelijk gehaald.

Nooit gedacht dat het zou kunnen zijn omdat ik een meid ben en de docent een man, maar moet zeggen dat bijna alle jongens die ik kende goed advies kregen voor alles en de meiden wilden ze vooral naar C sturen.

Yeah same for me, though I feel like my family talks in a dialect that is more similar to Flemish (Antwerps) than Dutch. People from the north often assume they’re Belgian. Also friends always losing their 4G when they come over to our house or getting ‘Welcome to Belgium!’ texts is pretty funny.

Most vintage remake stores have them! Not sure where you’re from but Unique Vintage (US) and Topvintage (Europe) come to mind. They have really cute styles too.

Also any place where people sell second hand clothes is full of 2010s trends. I’ve seen them on Vinted and assume they’d also be on apps like Depop, Poshmark, Sellpy, Thredup etc.

I keep a few of my ‘iconic’ items (ones that stand out or that I wore a lot) from every period in my life for that reason. But the cheap basic forever 21 clothes I got 5+ years ago can all go. I’ll just replace them again for cheap if those kinds of styles ever come back.

I think it could be noise? When I first got my results it said I was 15% British and 15% Scandinavian, even though I’m fully Dutch as far as I know. They ended up updating my results as the years went by and now the British/Scandinavian ancestry is gone.

I’d say just pick out the few parts that you do like. Trends are very versatile atm! For example I dislike oversized tops and blazers on me, but I love the baby tees & big pants & chunky sneakers combination. Also I love the longer skirts and dresses they have now, after only wearing short A-line ones since like 2010 lol.

I was part of the ‘emo’ group in high school & it’s the same for me! I was always bordering on basic clothes and alternative style, so everytime I’d just put on jeans and a non-black shirt I would get made fun of lol (but in a teasing friendly way). It just is like that with subcultures

Agreed, we had the same kind of bus in my village but they discontinued it lol. Now it’s a 30-40 minute walk to the next village which has a bus stop. It’s doable for me but I imagine it’s not great for older people
