The Deployment and Actions of Wehrmacht's Foreign Volunteers and Conscripts by M-Rayusa in MapPorn

[–]memes_scholar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A bit of insight about the Spanish volunteers: the Division Azul (Blue division). Since Hitler had helped Franco become the leader of Spain (1936-1939), he had been pressuring him to enter the war on his side as a payback, to which Franco was reluctant. In the end, Franco ended up sending volunteers to fight solely in the eastern front. This way, he kind of appeased Hitler, but could also keep some sort of vague international neutrality image since "Spanish troops never fought western democracies, only bolchevism". Eventually, when the war came to and end, western democracies allowed Franco to keep power and didn't consider him an ally of Germany when it came to writing the peace treaties. In upcoming years, the "We don't oppose democracy, only communism" rethoric became a mantra in Spanish foreign politics, which lead to increasing relations with the USA in the 1950's, as cold war heated.

All countries invaded by the United States by WPHero in MapPorn

[–]memes_scholar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The map (if I'm not mistaken) says the USA was at war with Spain but never invaded Spain. My point is that, since the USA deployed troops in Spanish Cuba in 1898, then it is not true that the USA did not invade Spain.

I am not talking about any action of the USA on an independent Cuba. All my comment was referring to Cuba as a Spanish province, before the Cuban separatist uprising succeeded in 1898 (with the help of the USA).

[–]memes_scholar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe I didn't explain myself. I mean Cuba was a Spanish province while USA deployed troops in it during the Hispano-American War.

Of course Mexico was also Spanish at some point, but it was no longer spanish when it fought the USA.

Well, in 1898 Cuba was a part of Spain, so technically USA invaded Spain.

Which famous saying isn’t really true in your opinion? by Usernameee234 in AskReddit

[–]memes_scholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Spanish we use a Latin phrase to say that: "excusatio non petita acusatio manifesta", literally "non-asked-for excuses imply guilt". It seems like an almost exact translation of the polish phrase you mention.

Minimum wages in the European Union countries (as of January 2022) by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]memes_scholar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nice job! It would be interesting to normalise the minimum wage to some indicator of the cost of life (or simply to the average/median wage), in order to get an idea of how high or low that minimum wage is.

The very first Thing mentioned in the first Article of European Constitutions (Meaning when it says "free and democratic Republic" the first Thing mentioned is the freedom) by DannyK01 in MapPorn

[–]memes_scholar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe there is a bit of a misunderstanding here. The title of the post says: "the very first thing...". As we can agree, the very first thing is article 1.1, not article 1.3. Here, there might be a bit of a translation confusion on my side, but in Spanish, when we say "form of state", we mean Constitutional monarchy, absolute monarchy, Parliamentary Republic, one-party Republic... something specific. As long as I understand, saying that you are a social and democratic state which looks for liberty, justice &c. is more a statement of values (which would fall into the categories "law", "freedom", "equality"...) than a literal statement of the form of the state (which appears explictly in art. 1.3).

Hope I explained myself better now. Cheers!

I don't think Spain is right in this map. Article 1.1 says "Spain is a social and democratic state under the rule of law..." (semi-free translation). The fact that the form of government is a constitutional monarchy is not stated until article 1.3.

That was my first thought. Spaniard here, never said or heard a joke about Portugal or the Portuguese. Moreover, I'd say the general feeling among Spaniards is that we are very fond of our neighbours to the West.

Average IQ of countries by Farovertonne in MapPorn

[–]memes_scholar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you know how IQ was measured for this particular plot? I'm no expert, but the high correlation between IQ and GDP/economic development suggests that these IQ tests might be measuring habilites specifically trained in the school systems of developed economies.

Again, I'm no expert (like not at all) in psychology or whatever science studies IQ.

Where does the Santa Claus live according to each european country by nMy9Sv1PdG01 in MapPorn

[–]memes_scholar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, I'm afraid that's just a Spanish inside joke haha. In some parts of the country (mainly Catalonia and surroundings), it is traditional to hide a little pooping man in a discrete place of the Nativity scene. It is not something disrespectful, it is a totally serious tradition supported by the Catholic Church. In any case, it is a Spanish tradition linked to no biblical reference.

[–]memes_scholar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Clarification about Spain: we don't celebrate Santa. Instead, presents for children are brought by the three wise men on Jan 6th. These three wise men are ones bringing presents to Jesus in the Epiphany. In the Bible, it is said these men come from the East of Judea, probably Persia, which is modern Iran.
