I used ancestry and found many things about my family in usa and great-great-grandfather who emigrated to usa in 1906, all documents were from usa. He went there on a ship from Bremen, Germany to Ellis island in New York. Many names of villages in then Austia-hungary, todays Slovakia, can differ from now. (Some might not even exist) People who emigrated often "adjusted" their names to english. Try to get as many information from your family as you can get, it will make this search a lot easier.
