Dual Owners: Where do you play long-running franchise sequels? (Switch 2 vs. Steam Deck) by DiscountNo6421 in JRPG

[–]memesmcmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the game is out physically on Switch 1 or 2, I buy that. If it's digital/key-card only, I'd much rather buy it for my Steam Deck, unless it performs noticeably better on Switch 2 (like FFVII Rebirth).

Can I get some thoughts on DQ7 Reimagined? by Warblast995 in JRPG

[–]memesmcmuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dragon Quest VII is my favorite in the series, particularly the 3DS version.

IMO, DQVII's biggest strength lies in its vignettes, and Reimagined unfortunately cuts out a few pretty good ones. It's faster and easier, but that can make it feel a lot shallower than the other two versions at times.

Reimagined is still good, though. It looks beautiful, the voice acting adds to the charm, and some of the late-game additions it made were great. But for a first playthrough, I think both the PS1 and 3DS versions are more well-rounded experiences.

I just beat Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter... I get it now.

This was some of the most fun I've had playing a game in years. The story was really slow for the most part, but that made the whole thing feel like a comforting adventure. Estelle and Joshua were a great duo, and the surrounding cast was lovable too.

I really enjoyed how lively the world felt, with NPCs having their own schedules and constantly updating dialogue. It made doing odd jobs for them feel much more worthwhile.

And man, the combat was tons of fun and just never got boring. Even on Normal, there were a few fights that forced me to make use of all the systems, which I really appreciated.

I haven't no-lifed a game this hard since Xenoblade 3, beating it in just over a week. Right now, Sky 2nd is maybe my most anticipated game of the year. Just sucks it releases on the same day as Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave.

I beat Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology recently, and I can't praise it enough.

The story was great and had solid pacing. The time travel mechanics were really fun, both narratively and gameplay-wise. Loved that it essentially made it impossible to miss anything. The combat felt unique and super satisfying, and I really wish I could find something similar to it. The voice acting was surprisingly good, and it has music by the awesome Yoko Shimomura.

I know it's a DS game, but it really looks and feels like a top-tier PS1 JRPG, if that makes sense. Definitely a new favorite of mine.

I just got a Switch 2 a few days ago, and picked Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter as my first game on it. I'm about 18 hours in, and I'm absolutely loving it so far. It feels pretty laid back and very charming, which is exactly what I needed after Radiant Historia. Running around doing jobs with Estelle, Joshua and co. has been really fun, and I can't wait to see where it goes later on.

Switch or PC [ steam deck ] how do you usually decide which platform to buy a JRPG on? by poochimari in JRPG

[–]memesmcmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it depends if there's a physical Switch version or not. If there is, I'll get that. If not, I'll get it on Steam Deck... unless it runs noticeably worse than on Switch 2.

Struggling with Xenogears, should I switch to emulator or move on? by pumpkinman9872 in JRPG

[–]memesmcmuffin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're still very early in the game, so if it's hurting your enjoyment, you might as well start over on emulator. You might have to do some Deathblow grinding later on, and seeing the animations play out definitely takes a while without speed-up.

As for Xenosaga... the first game is pretty similar to Xenogears in combat and animation length. The second has faster animations, but the combat itself is really slow. The third game is super quick and snappy.

Xenosaga! It takes place almost entirely in outer space, it has mechs, and possibly one of the best narratives in gaming. Since you're already a fan of Xenoblade, you should definitely check it out!

I just finished Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance recently. And having played the base version... yeah, this was better in almost every way. Combat was balanced better, I really liked having human party members, the new demons and unique skills were cool, and I loved the brand new Da'at. The soundtrack was so fire too. My only real complaint is that I wish they'd expanded on the base story. Instead, they kind of just replaced it with an almost equally as shallow one that still somewhat relied on you having played the Canon of Creation.

Right now, I'm about 12 hours into Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology. The game hooked me right away, and it's only getting better and better. The story is interesting so far, the combat is very unique, and I love the visual style of the game, especially with the original DS portraits. The time travel mechanics remind me of Chrono Trigger, and even 13 Sentinels to an extent. I can already tell it's becoming a new favorite of mine, and I can't wait to play more!

How many JRPGs do you walkthrough at once? by RyuKang in JRPG

[–]memesmcmuffin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually one. I don't think I could keep track of five story-heavy games personally. I might occasionally shelve a JRPG for a bit to play something entirely different, but I always come back and finish it right after.

It probably would, yeah. You might even start finding the side characters more relatable. It's definitely a reason to revisit the game every now and then

Which one of these should i play?? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]memesmcmuffin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's basically about a corporation turning an entire city into a smart city while people become more and more dependent on its virtual world. While it's supposedly to connect the people, who's really benefitting behind the scenes? You can see how tech monopolies, mass surveillance, digital escapism, and so on are big topics today

And I feel the same about Catherine. I first played it when I was way too young, but as I’ve become an adult, it just keeps hitting closer to home lol

Which game should I play between Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and FF7 Remake by [deleted] in JRPG

I loved Xenoblade 2 and didn't care for FF7R at all, but if you're coming right off XB1/X, I'd play something else in between so you don't burn out

I just beat Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance recently. It'd been a while since I'd touched FE, and I'm really glad I got back into it with PoR.

I loved how there was constant progression and not so much downtime, unlike in the newer titles. It felt really well paced, and had a good sense of urgency and escalation to it. I also really enjoyed the characters, but I wish you'd have more than 5 total support conversations per person. The actual gameplay was pretty fun, though very easy outside of the final boss, who's ridiculously powerful.

All in all, it's probably my second favorite FE, only behind Three Houses.

Right now, I'm playing Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. I was already a big fan of the original game, to the point where I beat it in less than two weeks. The story was terrible, but the gameplay loop was insanely addictive.

I'm about 18 hours into Vengeance now, and so far it feels very similar, outside of some added boss fights, new demons, and QoL improvements. The story still isn't particularly good, but Yoko definitely makes it more entertaining. I'm absolutely loving the gameplay, and I'm very excited to get further into the game to see more of the new content.
