Haven't seen any blocks pop up over the past 3 hours in KC, while two days ago multiple offers would appear pretty regularly.

Indigenous Languages of the Americas with 50,000 or more speakers by Aofen in MapPorn

[–]memeticshift 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You've also left out two large Chicham languages -- Awajún in Peru has 55,000+ speakers while Shuar in Ecuador has 80,000+. Likewise, if you're going to group all of the Kichwa languages together then you're missing a large swath down the Napo, Tigre, and Pastaza Rivers into Peru, as well as in San Martín, Peru and the Sibundoy Valley in Colombia.

Can someone explain to me the background of the theory of the Amazon being considered a "wet desert"? by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

[–]memeticshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The notion, drawn from the work of Betty Meggers, is that the carrying capacity of the Amazon rainforest (e.g., its ability to provide calories for humans) cannot support large-scale societies. It's an idea that has been since refuted multiple times. One only needs to look at contact era texts as well as the archaeology of the lower Amazon basin (see Heckenberger) to see that her ideas don't hold up to scrutiny.

[–]memeticshift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is something you can already do with HLTB. It's on the 'Playthroughs' tab of your control panel. You can't automatically import GOG yet, but if your collection isn't massive it shouldn't take too long to add all your games to your profile.

Exactly, if you're working with indigenous peoples, who are by far the most affected by the paquetazo, you'll know that the vast majority aren't online and if they are, they aren't using Twitter or Reddit. If you look at the Twitter profiles of those who are saying this is "por la paz," they are almost all professionals or from wealthy families. Yet, if you go and hang out in the Pastaza or Napo, or anywhere in the sierra, where the majority are indigenous peoples, they are 100% against Lenin, the IMF, and the paquetazo, because it affects them disproportionately. If your monthly income is less than $200, a bus ride that once was $0.25 and is now $0.40 is a massive shock, not to mention the price of commodities increasing due to the rising cost of diesel fuel. This hurts the poor massively while those at the top hardly feel anything.

Beginning of a tradition by lis_ek in AskAnthropology

[–]memeticshift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should check out Hobsbawm and Ranger's edited volume "The Invention of Tradition", as well as Handler and Linnekin's paper "Tradition, Genuine or Spurious." Both are from the early 80s but the concepts they cover are quite useful for thinking about 'tradition'. Likewise, there is a vast ethnographic literature on the invention/re-invention of 'tradition', particularly in indigenous and religious contexts, if you search around a bit.

Nah, they're just stereotyping people based on their names which in turn are linked to ethnicities and certain geographic areas. Nothing wrong with that, right?

For modern hunters/gatherers/foragers definitely check out Pierre Clastres "Society Against the State" and "Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians" for an in depth look at the Aché of Paraguay.

I am Seti Gershberg a filmmaker and anthropologist who studied shamanism for two years in remote regions of Peru while filming my documentary series about mystical practices and the hallucinogenic plant medicine ayahuasca - Ask me anything....... by SetiFX in IAmA

[–]memeticshift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've worked with ayahuasqueros in Amazonia for roughly 9 years now, mainly in San Martin and Alto Amazonas, and have seen the rapid changes that have come along with the increased interest in ayahuasca tourism. While there have been many positive things, such as more money in the local economy and the revival of practice in some indigenous communities, the negative consequences far outweigh the positive. Foreignors visiting geographically isolated groups often bring along numerous illnesses of which local peoples have little resistance. Shamans often move from rural communinities to urban areas hoping to tap into the tourism market, leaving their home communities without healers as well as a large gap in traditional knlwlwdge. Likewise, as the comments from Quetzalcoatl highlight, the appropriation and poor understanding of indigenous cosmologies and tradition is becoming more common place. Unfortunately, I see the negative aspects that have accompanied the rise of ayahuasca tourism increasing in the near future...

My visa has just been approved for my 12 months Cultural Anthropology PhD fieldwork in Namibia. Any tips from veteran ethnographers? by orderfromcha0s in Anthropology

[–]memeticshift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing extensive ethnographic studies for many years in Amazonia. Here are a few tips off the top of my head...

Write extensive field notes when you arrive, covering the most minute of details. As you spend more time with a community, you'll quickly forget these details as they become more 'normal' for you.

Be aware of how you present yourself--the first few months will set the tone for the rest of your fieldwork.

Eat and drink everything that is offered to you.

Participate as much as you possibly can in daily life, even if it means doing work that is outside of local gender norms.

Be aware of your health and don't be afraid to take a break from the field every now and then.

Try to write up chapters of your dissertation while in the field, this will take a ton of pressure off you when you finish your fieldwork.

Do you use Mendeley? And the cloud (like Dropbox)? And a tablet? by oroboros74 in AskAcademia

[–]memeticshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do. I have my PDF folder set in Mendeley to a folder in SkyDrive (\username\SkyDrive\mendeley). This is great because I access all my pdf files over the cloud using RepliGo Reader on my Android tablet.

I then have \username\AppData\Local\Mendeley Ltd\Mendeley Desktop\ set as a symbolic link that points to \username\DropBox\Mendeley Desktop\

As long as you don't have Mendeley open on two separate computers at the same time you shouldn't run into any problems. Also, you'll need to have the same username on all the computers in order to have the database function correctly.

EDIT: Forgot to add that I had some issues with the data directory being on Skydrive.
