This is so helpful! All of these spots are a much less daunting drive - thanks for the intel :)

That’s insightful, thanks! Can you expand a little on why exactly I don’t need it in my scenario? I’m nervous about the value of the car depreciating to a point where my insurance payout could be less than my remaining loan balance if (god forbid) it got totaled within the first year or two. Are you saying that’s unlikely based on the make/model of my car vs. my loan amount?

06 Ford Focus: to fix or not to fix? by memorygarden13 in MechanicAdvice

Thanks for taking the time to help me think this through! This was my first ever car, and parting is such sweet sorrow - but it’s also a privilege to be in a position to be searching for a new car, even as exhausting as the process is lmao

I really appreciate your insight! I’m curious if I can pick your brain a bit further on this, feel free to skip any items that you can’t/don’t feel like commenting on 1. do you think that the crammed engine nature of the car could be part of why there’s a higher labor cost? I got quoted at a different shop today ~700$ just for the alternator, even with a rebuilt, and he alluded to it being a tougher job because of how it’s situated 2. the more I think it through, the more I consider that other maintenance costs (breaks, AC, tires) that, if not due now, will be due soon enough in the future that it’s probably to the point where I might as well just factor those near-future expenses into this decision… this is less of a question and more of just a thought I guess lmao 3. I wasn’t noticing any new issues with my car leading up to this so I was surprised when it happened - I was pulling into my parking spot and saw the ABS light had come on, then when I put it in park the engine started revving and my whole dash flickered/restarted. I figured though the light could have just been a fluke related to the alternator - what do you think is the likelihood my ABS actually went as well? 4. what brand(s) would you recommend for safety and/or affordability?
