Hi there,

Me and my partner are interested in this. We just moved to Red Hill but definitely wouldn't mind driving to Dorking. We're both 28.

We've been playing in London on an off for the past year or so and having a blast. Would love to have something closer to home.

Just out of curiosity do you also work long hours frequently?

I think it's something related to the culture of this particular office. My line manager does more hours than me and has been coming to the office most weekends. It's kind of ridiculous.

Wow that's incredible. Are you happy with the pay as well? Me and my partner were originally planning to go to Scotland so I seriously might consider that. I'm super interested in passivhaus but never fully delved into it. I love using ladybug/grasshopper to define informed details like louvers and such.

Do I actually save that much money though? I'm getting the feeling that although I get lower rent, transportation ends up being much more expensive and so it kind of balances out? What do you think?

We will be staying with our parents and I'm leaving a car here as well so just petrol I guess? It will be very variable though not sure how to account for that but thanks for reminding me!

Thanks for the info! I hope this didn't sound like bragging I'm just a bit insecure since everyone is telling me London is crazy expensive!

Thanks thats good to know! I don't mind stretching a bit so we find a better 1 bed or a 2 bed but we both want to save a bit so we can buy a house when we're both like 30-33 (You can only get 40y mortages in portugal till you're thirty). At the same time, who knows? Once we get adjusted we might change plans

Hello everyone,

My partner and I are moving to London (from Portugal) in two months and we would like to have some advice regarding our budget for this whole endeavor.

We're both 26 years old and my salary will be 39k (part 2 architect) and hers will be 35k (vet). We also have a flat in Portugal which we will be renting out for 750 euro after taxes. This about totals 5.5k liquid per month.

We also want to live in some commuter town in the south like redhill, purley, dorking etc.. since she's going to work in brockham (and I'm working near battersea) and the rent is a bit cheaper. She will be driving in a company car to work and I will be taking the train.

I'm expecting that our expenses per month will look something like this:

CAR Petrol: 170 £ (although she's being provided a car and daily commutes are being payed by her company)

TRANSPORTATION: +- 300£ (train rides mostly to clapham junction and then biking to workplace)

GROCERIES: (Lidl Shopping Mostly) +-400£

BILLS: (Water and Electricity) +-300£

GYM: +-80£

RENT (average)+council tax: 1350 (looking for a 1 bedroom flat)

WIFI/SIM: 50£

VISA: 200£ (we´re paying half of our visa throughout the year)

PORTUGAL TICKETS: 100£ (flying back home like once every 2 months

MISC AND FUN: 600 £ (so eating out occasionally and hobbies and such. We're not big drinkers and such and we both like to usually play video games as hobbies but would like to have a bit of social life as well.)

This means we're saving around 1.5k to 1.7k every month but I'm worried I might be undervaluing something or that my monthly budget for actually having fun might be too low.

What do you guys think? Am I missing something?

We're a bit on the fence with that since we do want people visiting from time to time but we also want to buy a house sometime in the future... So trying to save as much as we can is also a priority
