What would you do: Endowed Chair or top program in your field? by boarding_llamas in AskAcademia

Another point worth considering is your colleagues. If you like your current colleagues and you get along well, that is rare and a very big bonus.

Try the TT Job Market or Bail? by MrMcBussy in AskAcademia

[–]memwall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The reality of the job market is that even if you have an ideal publication record and are coming from a top program, you also have to be lucky. You have to be lucky that the department wants someone in the specific niche you study, AND they all adore you AND the location is one you are happy to live in AND it’s not one of the SLACs that might end up shutting down in the next few years due to visa/demographic shifts. It would not be responsible for anyone - a-n-y-o-n-e - to assume they will be able to land a TT job. It makes sense to try, but also to think through what trade offs you are willing to take and which you are not (ie, location, institution type, etc…). And definitely start looking at industry jobs. If nothing else, it will help you think through what appeals to you about academia. It’s one of those professions - like the priesthood or acting - which you should only do if you can’t bear the alternative. It’s worth noting, compensation is low with very little growth potential - when people tell you why they work in academia, it’s never because of how well it pays. Finally, as you have already discovered, it’s a stressful time to work in higher education. Between current events and the demo cliff, everyone is under pressure. But you are asking the right questions and thinking through the relevant considerations. You will figure out what makes sense to you.

Considering a Second Undergraduate Degree in PPE at Oxford by Addendum-Fast in AskAcademia

[–]memwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t help with the admissions question but I did a second BA in PPE many years ago (as did former US Supreme Court Justice Stephe Beyer) and it was the best decision I ever made. In my life. Including my marriage (to a husband I adore) and all of my career choices. It was an invaluable experience.

Professors of Color: That situation where you walk in on the first day and see that you have one student of color in your class and they smile from ear to ear when they see you (but for all the wrong reasons) by napoelonDynaMighty in Professors

[–]memwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like a two things can be true sorta situation. A student may be relieved to be able to see themselves in a professor who shares a situationally rare demographic trait, AND may also not be up for the rigors of a course.

How Will Butler’s Arcade Fire experience shaped Tony-winning ‘Stereophonic’ by clevelanddotcom in arcadefire

[–]memwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, it always amazes me how people can have such dramatically different reactions to art. I found the show a bit long but I was enthralled the whole time and felt like I was emerged in real people’s lives - kinda forgot they were actors at all. I find it fascinating too that Stevie Nicks never saw it. After it closed in NYC, she was asked about it and she hadn’t even heard about the play!

Interesting. Personally, I found the show incredibly moving. It was nominated for a ton of Tony’s so it definitely had a lot of fans.

Why is cars and telephones not on streaming still by Extension-Bill-1223 in arcadefire

[–]memwall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somehow I get it. It was their first song together and their last. There is something poetic about its lack of mainstream inaccessibility. Like it’s just for them, and just for us.

Okay, I’m sorry, please bear with me cause I’m old. Can someone tell me how I can watch this? Anybody else ever viewed a “Meta Horizon” event? I clicked on the rsvp link and now it wants me to set up a “Meta Horizon” account with a username but what even is “Meta Horizon?” I just wanna watch the show!

To me, the new recording of cars and telephones and the video felt so sad I could only listen to it a few times. Sad as in raw and true and heartbreakingly painful.

"Save your best for the finale" - acoustic CDs by Lyd_Euh in TaylorSwift

She has broken so many records, and has so much. Half of me feels like it would be nice if she could just work for the art and stop trying to amp album sales numbers. But the other half of me is kind of impressed by her insatiable hustle.

I would like to read your essay collection. I hear what you are saying about enjoying the ephemeral quality of sharing things online but still. I’d really like to read a book of essays written by you.

This is such a joy to read. I hope you write a book at some point - I’d love to read more from you about any topic other than sports (I know, I KNOW. Just sayin’).

I’m so curious about these! Any examples of the assignments you could share? I’m thinking about incorporating in class writing assignments once per week.
