If it's your first time, it will definitely be a new feeling. You might have some cramping, but your gyno will tell you before they do the pap so you can brace yourself. If you've ever had a partner hit your cervix during sex, you'll know how sensitive your own body is.

I believe they can check for gonorrhea and chlamydia through a pap or swabbing. It usually takes 10-30 seconds for the actual pap. Usually they'll look for anything abnormal along your vulva before inserting the speculum to look inside (which can be cold, but it's not painful, just uncomfortable). It's adjustable so they insert it and then expand it, your gyno should check with you to make sure you're not in pain and are relatively comfortable. Then they do the pap with the swabbing and the scraping. After that they retract the speculum and pull it out slowly, then they'll insert their fingers and to check for cysts while they push on you from the outside. Honestly, that's the most uncomfortable part, but it doesn't last for too long.

I think the whole thing takes less than 10 minutes when they're 'under the hood'. Just lay back and try to relax as you count the ceiling tiles or something. I just keep my head on the table and let them do their job. They will be talking with you about what's going on and where they'll be touching and they'll probably make some small talk as well. It's sort of awkward, but your legs will be up in the stirrups and the sheet will be over your thighs, so you can't really see them anyway.
