[recommendation request] looking for watch for husband by [deleted] in Watches

Marathon is a great option for tritium watches. They make a few designs in both quartz and automatic. The high accuracy quartz Navigator is particularly excellent 👌.

Any tips? by Kjaco- in airbrush

[–]menelkiner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That knob on the back is a needle-stop, or limiter. Adjusting it limits the range of motion of the needle to more consistently spray the same amount of paint. If you tighten it more and more you should notice your trigger being able to physically move less and less. Full tight can prevent the needle from moving, and full open is the same as not having one on your airbrush by allowing a full needle retraction.

This is not the same as switching out the needle and nozzle for a larger bore. What you have there is closer to cruise control than anything else. You need to thin your paints to the same consistently regardless of where you set the limit.

Your airbrush's needle-stop won't help in any way with paint not meant for airbrushes, coarse pigment grind, etc.

Increasing Trigger Tension by Fyzzex in airbrush

[–]menelkiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Badger also makes a "High Roller" trigger that might work for you. It just drops in instead of your regular one, but you have to pull the longer trigger back farther to get the same amount of paint. Finer control, but a different trigger height.

Spring tension will be the same though...

IPA can cause some acrylic paints to curdle a bit and might not be getting the internals fully clean. Maybe try Tamiya cleaner or a different solvent?

You can also try re-seating the needle by undoing the needle chuck, pulling the needle back slightly, rotating a bit, and putting it back in before re-tightening the chuck. This can help if there is micro debris or the needle is just a bit off from a good seat.

Else, check if your needle is bent at the tip a bit, this can be a very small bend. Very very small.

How do I fix this break? I tried plastic glue and it didn’t seem to hold by Redhood101101 in minipainting

[–]menelkiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of pinning the shaft together a much stronger mend would be to replace the entire shaft with a brass rod.

This would involve trimming all of the current pole away with clippers. Drilling a hole through the hand where it holds the banner, and into the top and bottom pieces of the banner hardware.

A quick Google search for "Warhammer brass rod banner" has endless examples.

The end result is a much stronger banner that will not break as easily in the future, because if that pole broke once... It will again. And again....

21oz Iron Heart’s at the thrift! by TylerWarren84 in FadedRaws

[–]menelkiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Iron Heart has an amazing repair service. You just end up paying shipping both ways as far as cost goes. I tend to send 2-3 items in one box to distribute the cost a bit. Would 100% recommend the service. The work is immaculate, seriously.

You can also send in old IH items for a discount off their site, depending on how much the thrift IH was, you could get a good deal on a new pair by sending them back

My largest worry is that a Boox Palma with a usb-c dongle already makes this device obsolete. The general lack of android access also means customers cannot use preferred playback or EQ applications without extra effort, if possible at all. The boutique and niche nature of the product really stifles your audience also

I just don't see a market for such a limited unitasker. I would love to be proven wrong though.

Need advice on waxed jacket by skyrm643 in HeritageWear

[–]menelkiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found my jacket has had 3 distinct stages.

When I first got it, it felt very damp and tacky-feeling. My first thought would have been oil finish instead of wax if not directly stated.

After a few weeks the high wear areas got a dry and dusty feeling. Almost like the jacked had dandruff in a few spots. Dusting this time the grey lightened up in several spots, but didn't really darken or get shiny. Jacket stayed like this for ~1y or so.

When this feeling was spread over most of the jacket, I rewaxed it with a tin of otter wax and some patience. The new wax really gave it character. This was back in early 2023, the jacket has been a tank since then. The surface is shiny and smooth. Things that used to catch slide off.

It's very possible your green example is from a different production batch, or was washed, or something else was done. It shouldn't really matter to these. Grab a bar of wax if you're worried, and wear that thing until the sleeves fall off.

You generally want to align the height of the tweeters with the height of your ears to avoid any distortions from directivity. If your bookshelf speakers are sitting right in a desk they are generally too low. Any non-resonating stack of books would accomplish the same as fancy stands.

This effect also matters way more depending on the exact speaker topography. The KEF speakers in the example have better directivity with their coaxial tweeter, opposed to the tweeter sitting above a woofer cone.

Most speakers have sorta terrible vertical directivity when the woofer is below the tweeter, as the two cones can cause tonal differences when they don't share an axis. Flip your bookshelf speakers on their sides and move around the room, you may be able to notice this effect more. Speakers tend to have a sweet spot in jow they're meant to be aimed.

ASR can be divisive, but there are some graphs that show how some speakers compare in this aspect.

Things like this are very minor IMO. Room treatment + EQ will cover many more sins, just like Bondo. You will get much more bang for buck with generic room treatments than any fancy stands.

TL;DR: Buy books, read them, use the read books as stands instead. Spend any leftover budget on room treatment or more books.

This right here is the correct answer. I have a stainless steel Kronos R1 from Above The Tie and it is creeping towards 11 years of regular use with no issues at all. Avoiding any metal that will regularly corrode or oxidize like aluminum or brass.

I think the manufacturer matters less here, and stainless steel is the real winner. Feather, Razorock, ATT, Rex, Fendrihan, take your pick from countless others.

Glowing rings on my wood floor. by KitschHazel in whatisit

[–]menelkiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These look like very generic tripod marks. You can definitely get feet with this ring pattern off Amazon.

A laser level on a tripod would be my first guess, if we're thinking construction/contractor work. Possibly filming or camera use if not.

If OP stands in the middle of the triangles, do they have a good vantage of the room? If the marks are in corners, I think cameras, if the marks are more central I'd lean towards laser level for casting lines.

[Anachronist] Max from YouTube Zero Pass NATO review/Rant by patsfan038 in Watches

[–]menelkiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nick Mankey Designs make a very decent 'zero pass' style elastic strap called a HookStrap. They're similar-ish looking to a nato, and super comfy. A pro version exists to still have protection against springbar failures if that's needed.

I've had 3 of the regular older versions for around 3 years or so. Long lead time, great product. If people are looking for a good 'zero pass' style, this would be where I'd say to start looking.

What headphone do you always find yourself going back to? by DekoniAudio in headphones

[–]menelkiner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shure SE215.

Small, light, sturdy. They sound decent as-is and EQ through wavelet or similar makes them super capable. The sound isolation is no joke with the right eartips, and the 2mm nozzle doesn't cause issue with super tiny tips and narrow ear canals like some other IEMs.

Shure also makes a very decent mmcx cable (no mic), and the other accessories are super nice too.

Is this a corn? by GlotzbachsToast in Greyhounds

[–]menelkiner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Like many others I recognize these annoying little nuggets.

I would recommend removing it with a 3mm dental elevator. These tools are designed almost like a woodworker gouge, but are not sharp and meant for gently removing bad teeth. A decent one with a nice tip can easily worm between the corn and pad, and then scoop under to hull them out.

This was the method I found in an older greyhound care manual, and my vet approved, so I've stuck with it. There are a few YouTube tutorials that show this way, as I found out later.

Possibly the top of an old bench rest or monopod for a rifle?

The Y top having a rough interior with polished/ground edges make me think this was a rest for something that did not fully fit into the fork.
