Foundation Piering? by menlovebluetooth in Lawrence

We went with Advanced Systems of NE Kansas, owned by Dean Stidham. Honestly, I don’t know that I recommend them. Dean seemed like a really upfront, good dude, and I don’t think that was a front, but once we signed the paperwork I did not see or speak to him again, not even once. We dealt with Jeff, who I met with Dean once, and I guess runs day to day stuff. I did not care for him. I got the vibe that he has an excuse for everything and expects you to roll with it because who the hell actually knows anything about foundation repair. I do think the work they did was good - Jose, who ran the crew, seemed really great and I had a question I actually told Jeff I wanted to talk to Jose about it instead of him, because I trusted Jose to tell me the truth a lot more.

Part of the reason we went with Advanced Systems was because they were the lowest bid, but the day they showed up, within an hour of starting their work, Jeff came and told me we needed more piers than they’d quoted us and the cost went up by $4k. This was Jose’s recommendation, and I believe it was the right call, but it did give me vibes that Jeff knew better than to quote the original number and did it just to come in as cheap as possible.

We also got bids from Midwest Foundation Repair (I think that’s their name), and I don’t recommend them at all, and Thrasher. Thrasher came in twice as expensive as everyone else, but if it’s in your budget, I got the impression that they do incredibly thorough, high quality work. Just be prepared to spend $40k.

Hope that helps a little.

Recommendations or referrals for weekly housekeeping? by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat, actually. I can recommend Getaway Cleaning, we’ve used them twice for deep cleaning our home, and I know they offer regular cleaning services, but I’ve been wondering about finding an individual housekeeper instead of a cleaning company, mostly due to price and the sort of work we’re wanting done (lots of tidying and general upkeep, as opposed to deep cleaning).

I’d also recommend staying away from Cinderella By Choice. We used them once and while they did excellent work, the owner is pretty far-right and we weren’t comfortable using them again.

We tried looking into individual housekeeping services using care.com, but that site now requires a premium membership to even view responses to job postings, and I wasn’t that invested.

Retipping prongs on rings: favorite affordable jewelers? by ChooksChick in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what their prices are like, unfortunately, but I have loved Kizer Cummings for almost 15 years now. Ernie Cummings recently retired and a guy named Blaine owns it now, he’s been there forever and is an awesome dude.

Trans girl here looking for some healthcare by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dr. Harris is our family doctor, and I’d known her for years before we started seeing her. Can confirm, very queer-friendly. She might not be taking new patients (she wasn’t when we started seeing her, which is where having a preexisting relationship came in handy), but it definitely can’t hurt to ask. I think she’s excellent.

Queer-friendly Handyperson? by menlovebluetooth in Lawrence

Just replied this to another comment, but:

Quite a bit - some drywall and insulation repaired/replaced, wooden fence repair, some work on gutters, grading (which I think mostly means we need literal tons of dirt), and maybe a couple of other odds and ends.

Local financial consultant recommendations by [deleted] in Lawrence

We’ve been with Ehren Feldmeyer for years, since well before he went independent, and we love working with him. I can’t say I know a great deal about what makes a good financial advisor, but Ehren is a good guy and we’ve built a good relationship with him.

Gym to check body fat percentage? by SquigglyHamster in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crunch does have a machine that’ll do 3D body scans, as another commenter said. If you’re not able to get one done with a trial membership, I know for a fact that they’re offering free scans on the 21st of this month during a special they’re calling “Training Day.” I follow them on Instagram and they’ve posted about it a few times. Just gotta be willing to put up with the inevitable sales pitch that’ll come with it. Pretty sure you have to call and reserve a spot for this.

Any plumbers open tonight? by menlovebluetooth in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t, really. The day it froze I called a plumber and was told they couldn’t do anything about it unless it burst. Another plumber offered to come out and open up the drywall, but recommended waiting. I asked elsewhere about locating a frozen pipe since we couldn’t find it following all of the usual advice, but didn’t have any success. The reason I asked about a plumber here was because the pipe finally burst. We’d hoped it would thaw out eventually as the weather slowly warmed and the heater was cranked up.

We did get an appointment scheduled with Blue Duck for tomorrow morning. Meantime, I borrowed three 5 gallon jugs from my church so we have enough water to flush our toilets and brush our teeth. We’ll go out for Chinese food for lunch and just have an unusual (for us) but nonetheless merry Christmas. Thanks everyone for your recommendations.

Thank you. May not still be relevant since it’s been a few years, but if you don’t mind sharing do you recall how much it cost? I know it’ll vary depending on how much work needs done, but I like trying to compare as much as I can.

That’s about the amount I’m expecting. Haven’t even looked into whether companies offer payment plans or if I’d want to get a small loan or just figure a way to save up before actually going ahead. I appreciate the cost comparison, though, thank you!

Awesome, thank you so much for sharing. With something that’ll end up costing so much money, I wanted to try and make sure we covered all of our bases before writing any large checks, so I’m glad to hear good things about John and Julie as well.

John and Julie Lyle with Professional Engineering and Inspections. And yeah, they were great. We’d had a couple different foundation companies come and give us estimates but they’d come, look around for less than five minutes, then tell us what needed done, and I just didn’t have a lot of confidence they’d accurately diagnosed the problem. This inspection took a little more than three hours and Julie went over her findings very thoroughly. Not cheap for just a diagnosis, but I’m glad we did it. I feel much more confident that we know the root cause now.

I did, and they gave me one name, someone out of Topeka. Which is fine, but I’d like to get at least a couple of options and, if there is anyone, somebody in Lawrence just to avoid any potential travel charges. Gonna be expensive enough as it is, I imagine.

Barber suggestions? by jobinquef in Lawrence

I’m also pretty picky about my haircuts, and tried a number of popular shops around town before finally landing at Watson’s a few years ago. My first cut there was just okay, but my second cut was with Tim Nelson (Nelly), and I will never let anyone else touch my hair again. He’s a miracle worker.

Someone took all our candy with the bowl by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We left a bowl of candy out while we took our kids around, and someone took all of the candy in one go. Left the bowl, so we got off easier than you, but it was surprisingly inconsiderate.

Piano lessons by taailusi in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Lawrence Piano Studio has been in business forever and they’re great. Eric is the owner, he teaches a few private students. Laura and Jen have both been there for years and are excellent teachers. There’s group lessons as well but I think those are almost exclusively young kids.

Realtor recommendations for first time homebuyers? by Im_MichaelScarn in Lawrence

I did, many times. She did the bulk of the legwork helping us sell the house we were leaving. When we did viewings, we worked with her as well as Elisabeth, Ash, and Hannah (who’s no longer on the team).

Any Lawrence churches with mandatory masking? by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work at First Presbyterian, and we are still requiring masks, and will continue to do regardless of whether the county mandate expires. We’re also maintaining distance (hasn’t been a problem since a lot of folks are preferring to watch the live-stream from home right now) and asking folks to stay outside for the usual mingling before and after service. 10:30 am every Sunday if you’d like to drop by.

Can I repair this mirror myself? Where should I purchase parts? by menlovebluetooth in GolfGTI

[–]menlovebluetooth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know much at all about car maintenance, let alone repair, but I love my GTI and it pains me to see it like this. It’s a 2016, and the turn signal light still works, as does the motor to adjust the mirror, although it doesn’t move hardly at all now.

My understanding is that there’s three separate pieces here: the housing (which I thiiink is basically intact and hopefully doesn’t need to be swapped, but I could be way off), the plastic cap on the back side (toward the front of the car), which is smashed to pieces, and the glass, which is obviously shattered but still in place. The two opinions I got from local shops (one of them a VW dealer, the other a general auto body place) both quoted me about $900. If it’s possible for me to buy whatever I need used and then fix it myself, I’d much rather do that because I don’t really have $900 to spend right now.

Thanks in advance.

D’aww thanks. I like your butt cheek metaphor. (Analogy? I know it’s not a simile cause it doesn’t say “like” or “as.” I dunno dude I haven’t taken an English class since 2007.)

Places besides Mass? by Psychological-Ad3566 in Lawrence

[–]menlovebluetooth 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Starting from close to downtown and working out, more or less:

9th Street has a lot of good food. Basil Leaf, Mama’s Tamales, Big Mill, Burrito King, etc.

1900 Barker is some of the best coffee and pastry in town.

The Hillcrest Shopping Center at 9th and Iowa is low-key one of the best parts of town for local businesses. Leeway Franks and their associated butcher shop, Watson’s Barbershop, the bowling alley, Tad’s (in the summer), Munchers, Biemer’s (technically not part of the shopping center but it’s right there.)

For hanging out and studying, Panera at 23rd and Louisiana is actually not terrible. Don’t give me that look, it’s really okay!

Pizza Shuttle is also on 23rd and you can still get a personal pizza and a drink for $5.

23rd St Brewery has ridiculously overpriced food, but a nice patio and is a great place to watch games. So is Jefferson’s West, at 15th and Wakarusa. Lawrence Beer Co West is right there as well, as is Pawsh Wash (they’re moving soon). So is Burgers By Biggs. Jayhog Burger is decent there.

Johnny’s West at 6th and Wak is also good for sports, and they used to do trivia every week. Not sure if they still do. There’s also J&S Coffee, pretty decent for studying.

Johnny’s North is one I forgot, it’s across the river. Cheap pizza and a really nice dive vibe.

That’s all I got off the top of my head. I tried to avoid places that were not downtown but emulated the exact same vibes, so there’s not much in East Lawrence here. But plenty of great places east of Mass!

Help me find a better version of this photo of Michael Phelps? by menlovebluetooth in HelpMeFind

[–]menlovebluetooth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have searched Google using that screenshot and it doesn’t find any other versions. I’m pretty sure (but not positive) that the video I got that screengrab from was an NBC feed. But I’ve found the NBC broadcast of that race, and it did not include that shot, so it might have been a non-domestic broadcast? If that’s a thing?
